Just for fun - anyone wanna share their Halloween costumes with the rest of the MeFi gang? Or brag about their parties or other Halloween-themed events?

HAPPY HALLOWEEN, MeFites!

My wife and I just discovered that on this quiet little back street in Hadley, there are routinely 80-100 trick-or-treaters every Hallowe'en. They bus the little fuckers in from all over. There are college kids coming around for a handout. And we only have three bags of candy. (We moved from Pittsfield, where there were a maximum of two kids each year.)

No, I don't have a fucking costume. But koeselitz told me to vent, so I'm venting.

We're having a costume party at the house and are expecting about ten people, but none of the ten people will be wearing costumes, as it is not a people costume party, but a dog costume party. We are expecting five dogs. Our dog is dressing in, coincidentally, a Cobra Kai skeleton costume. Also in attendance will be a Schnauzer dressed as a hotdog, a dachshund dressed as a security guard and a couple of other dogs whose costumes will be surprises. Not only will we have five dogs running around in costumes, but I gave my wife a fire pit for her birthday, so we are going to light a fire outside and make s'mores. I can only assume that a dog wearing a ridiculous costume will run by the open flames and catch on fire, and then run around the yard catching all the other costumed dogs on fire and so our backyard will be filled with flaming costumed dogs. I can't decide if this party is the craziest fucking thing I have ever heard of or if it is THE CRAZIEST FUCKING THING I HAVE EVER HEARD OF.

At least I got to carve a cool pumpkin.

And now I feel that if I open another thread, it will surely be closed and people will be referred to this thread, which really doesn't serve as much of a contest at all.

As I'm sick like the death, I have no costume for today. But I saw something that inspired me for next year:

Target is selling these plastic/ resin pumpkins that look pretty damn realistic, one of which is big enough that I could make a pretty good mask out of it. I'm gonna get one in a week or so on the cheap, then I'm going to make it into a jack-o-lantern kind of mask. Ultimately it will incorporate in a scarecrow costume that I'm going to use to scare the shit out of kids for trick-or-treating next year.

But even better, I'm going to convince some friends to do a Wizard of Oz theme, where we are all characters who are slightly off. I'm going to be the Scarecrow who carries a bloody bone say, 'because I'm looking for a brain'.

A couple of friends of mine did this a while ago with REAL pumpkins. It took them ages to hollow out 2 fairly large pumpkins so that they were light enough to wear on your head*. Then, one of them wore a tux and the other a sparkly punk dress (they are both guys) and they strolled around town. It was awesome. I thought I had pictures on my Flickr but I can't find them...

Thank you, piratebowling. You'll be pleased to know that I had to mutilate very few of the ties you gave me in order to make my mask.

Walking around in costume in New York is incredibly fun, especially if a mask hides your face because you are somewhat liberated from reacting to people's reaction to your costume. I wish masks and veils were more in style (and not triggers of terroristic alarm); the experience of two masked people regarding each other on the subway is unforgettable.

Although I hit a weird moment last night when I walked through a half-block long crowd of tourists who were all waiting to get into a Broadway show. There was a sort of sudden clamour of interest from all sides and I had a terrifying flash to that climactic scene in The Elephant Man. In fact I sort of panicked and hurried away, and fortunately didn't knock down any children.

Speaking of children, I can't get over the fact that they all Trick or Treat the businesses in the neighborhood, almost exclusively. When I went into the liquor store yesterday evening, I could barely get in because of mob of children that had gotten in ahead of me. The image of children trooping eagerly into the liquor store was almost as disturbing as actually having to shop for liquor in front of a dozen kids and their parents.

Further recap: the B-52's still rock, I doubt anyone else in their 60's is having as much fun (or can dance as frenetically as Fred Schneider). I'd bet my eyeteeth that their show is better than anything the Stones or any similarly old group is putting out there. Also, the guys in The Rapture were totally dreamy in their Ghostbusters costumes, and the lead singer's was too tight so I could see his proton pack right through his pants. His voice is awesome, like a saber made of glass. My ears are still ringing this morning.

By the way, quin, I did something similar to your pumpkin idea last year, using decidedly non-realistic plastic pumpkins from Target: Mr. Pumpkinhead.

It's hard to see in the video, but I was surrounded by hay bales and a half-dozen other pumpkins, so I blended in pretty well. I think the neighbors considered it a hit: I certainly scared the sweet bejeezus out of a lot of folks.

My kids went as the Master Chief and the Arbiter, and I was Cortana, from Halo. I made the costumes in two extremely hectic, spraypaint-fume laden days, as they decided last minute they weren't too cool to Trick or Treat after all. After a full day's scrubbing, I think I still have paint under my fingernails.

The Chief's helmet was huge and not too comfortable, so the Spartan guarded home base, playing Diablo and giving out (full-sized, of course!) candy, while we patrolled the neighborhood, the Arbiter brandishing his glowstick-fueled Energy Sword for my protection.

Bonus: The Arbiter scored bigtime candy largesse from a gamer who recognized him, who loaded half his bag down with Skittles, so he will be tasting the rainbow for days to come. He earned his Mark of Shame jumping out of the bushes at his uncle's house, scaring the little kids.

My family and I went out as a set of pirates except for my son who was a parrot.

    I was a software pirate.

I went as Alyx Vance from Half-Life 2 (and subsequent). Photo photo photo. $26 at the Army Surplus store and about 45 minutes of work with an exacto, a bowl, and an old hoody got me an AWESOME Black Mesa logo-ed sweatshirt. I wish I'd done it more permanently.

After all the jokes I've read about possibilities of dressing up as Michael Vick, I was disappointed to not see a single Michael Vick during trick-or-treating.

After the reaction both here and elsewhere to the Weighted Companion Cube costume, I heartily encourage any single MeFites out there to get themselves a cardboard box, some insulation foam, paint, and a Wonder Cutter post haste.

I'm married, so already have my Chell, and therefore feel no qualms about passing on this Master Technique to Woo a Geekette. May I suggest renting a tux, donning your WCC, and sitting alone at an outdoor cafe or bistro with a single red rose in hand?

My kids went as the Master Chief and the Arbiter, and I was Cortana, from Halo.

    Awesome! Where are the pictures??

I'm told I look like House (I think we look like cousins at most), and told that I act like House (the sarcastic yet somewhat charming asshole), so I figured I'd go as him* this year.

My exgirlfriend summed it up nicely when she said "so you went as yourself with a limp and a cane?" Pretty much. It didn't require any special dressing up. People seemed to genuinely like it, though. You can't tell in the photo, and I'm sure no one noticed that night, but I'm wearing these sneakers.

*Please excuse my face; I was going for "curmudgeonly" but a few cocktails later and you end up with "muddled."

I had to throw something together at the last minute. has Dr. House. You can't see in those photos, but my sneakers are pretty damn close.

My friend was The Death of the American Dreram.

Whoa, CitrusFreak12, I totally missed your post until after I posted.

Also, I screwed up the html, my post should have read:

I had to throw something together at the last minute. I went has Dr. House.
