i just wanted to mention that the plain theme is looking real nice these days and to thank matt and pb for keeping it updated.
i use it at work, when i'm not, you know, working. it certainly looks professional with the white background and all, and though it lacks a giant best-of .gif and a microphone, it is overall a most pleasant interface to be goofing off at work from.

I'm looking forward to the iPhone interface for MeFi. Ahem.

Ditto. I've been using the plain theme since it first launched, and I've been grateful that everything works. Support for this stuff is usually the first thing web developers let fall to the wayside. Thanks, guys.

The secret to the reasonably solid Plain Theme support is that Jess and I both use it and complain loudly via email when anything is broken.
(I don't actually like like the theme, personally, but it's definitely the better choice for my dayjob. As soon as I get home, it's wall-to-wall color on my Mefi.)

The plain theme looks like somebody stuffed shit with vomit, wrapped it in aluminum foil, baked it for 30 minutes at 350 degrees and then threw it as hard as they could at a Nazi flag draped over a brick wall.
I love it.

I've just discovered a way around the draconian impositions on this workplace station and now can citrix (ssh?) my way onto the Internet. If I set my preferences to plain theme here will they remain that way on this terminal or will I have to re-set that every time? I have to log in every time I access MeFi from this computer if that's any help. (Makes me think the answer to that question is 'no' though.) Also, changing prefs for the layout here at work won't change anything on my home computer, right?

Why in gods name is "white background" considered professional? Who in their right mind wants a giant CRT glaring at them all day, or an LCD back light? Original CRTs used bright letters because they were easier on the eyes, and dark backgrounds have always been easier to read.

I'm going to finally do a theme customizer thing in a few months, where you can tweak the existing template or apply your own CSS like on virb.com. I'll have to setup filtering to prevent the IE and Firefox CSS/XSS hacks, but I think we can get it to work. Once something like that is in place, anyone can make any theme they want and I'll create some way to vote on stuff you like and show off the highest rated ones.

I get a kind of poor-man's plain theme at work because for some unfathomable reason the internet filters block [everything].metafilter.com except metatalk.metafilter.com so the browser can't load the stylesheets (but I can read MeTa all day). Still, it does the job (blending in with Excel, Outlook, etc).

I work at home and never, ever scold myself for reading MeFi during the day (the evening, the wee small hours, matins, ...), so I have absolutely no external justification for preferring to use plain. And I usually find huge white expanses of screen to be overwhelming. But after switching themes for some odd reason ages ago, I feel as if I've been thrown into a gunnysack whenever I switch back to the classic theme. It really is more readable for me this way.
