mystery tags from the twilight zone October 11, 2007 6:21 PM   Subscribe

If we click on the music tag, and scroll down to see the Users who often use this tag, we find that CKmtl has used the tag in 65 posts, and nkknkk has used the tag a staggering 164 times! But in fact, it's not true. What's up?

Am I pointing this out in order to have it corrected, and thereafter take my rightful place as king of the music tag? So that all my tireless efforts in crafting music-related FPPs will get their due recognition, at least on the "All posts tagged with music" page? HELL, YEAH!

Also, the next one down, madamjujujive, is reported to have 34 posts, but really only has 28.

THE PLOT THICKENS.

At one point the tagging team had their personal tags screwed up because tags they gave to old posts showed up under their personal metric, I think that was fixed, but perhaps this is some odd hold over?
posted by edgeways at 6:32 PM on October 11, 2007

What edgeways said. This is an artifact of the tagging team.
posted by monju_bosatsu at 6:40 PM on October 11, 2007

They were on the tagging team, which we can easily filter out and fix for the tag pages (we don't display them on your user page).

Ah, my dear flapjax, you've uncover'ed our plot to undermine this system of tagging. And so, my friend, you've won...this time...

Holy shit! nkknkk's tally just jumped to 166! This is a race to the top that I'll never win!

Must... make.. more... *gasp* music... posts...

I'm backtagging, I'm backtagging!!! And there were a LOT of music posts back in the days o' Napster. I quake to think how many Politics tags I've written.

ps: thanks for the callout, woo!

It's thrown on the to do file.

Go, nkknkk! Now I understand (I think), and support the fine work you're doing!

Still, I think this take on the old R&B hit "Backstabbers" is appropriate:

They smile in your face
All the time they wanna take your place,
The back taggers,
Back taggers!

So, I'm soldiering on... here's flapjax music post number 50, hot off the presses!

Well, keep at it, son, and someday you'll reach the dizzying heights of music tag glory that I have achieved. Yep, the air's pretty sweet up here at the top, lemme tell ya!

That tag's on me...

Wait, isn't y2karl the rightful king of the music tag? What with his mighty 67 music posts to flapjax at midnite's 50? Or is this more tag malarkey?
posted by Kattullus at 8:14 PM on October 11, 2007

Wait, isn't y2karl the rightful king of the music tag?

Kattullus, you're right! But he's just jumped up there! When I made this post to MeTa, a little less than 2 hours ago, y2Karl was under me, at around 30-something music posts! I dunno, did this post to MeTa initiate a flurry of retaggings? So it would appear!

BTW, I'm back with the beer. Anybody want one?
posted by flapjax at midnite at 9:10 PM on October 11, 2007

I think I may need a beer after the turn my Sigur Rós post took. Whatcha got, flapjax?
posted by Kattullus at 9:11 PM on October 11, 2007

I have some imported Icelandic beer. But I can't read the language on the label, so it might just be made up. But the important thing is that it's imported.
posted by spiderwire at 9:16 PM on October 11, 2007

Oh damn, Icelandic beer's swill. Oh well, I suppose I can take a swig for the motherland.
posted by Kattullus at 9:18 PM on October 11, 2007

Well, lessee... something from Iceland? Naah... Here we go: a nice Boddington's, at room temperature!, Lemme pour you one, from the patented widget-in-can can. Just like it's pulled from a tap in a London pub, but right here at home! Uh-uh... no, not yet... be patient.. gotta let that head totally separate, and rest on the top, nice and clean. Look at that creamy head! There... there you go! Cheers!
posted by flapjax at midnite at 9:25 PM on October 11, 2007

Oh damn, Icelandic beer's swill.

If it tasted good, then everyone would drink it.

Both independent music and imported beer demand a fine appreciation of obscurantism, my friend.
posted by spiderwire at 9:27 PM on October 11, 2007

Also, I would like to officially apologize to Katullus for poisoning the well w/r/t the Sigur Rós post. Or rather, pushing the mockery too quickly into the "your favorite band sucks" flamewar. (Though most music posts seem to inevitably head that direction anyway.)

I also may have underestimated their Picasso-like brilliance
posted by spiderwire at 9:38 PM on October 11, 2007

mmm... Boddington's... now there's a nice ale.

also, it reminds me of everyone's favorite behatted, becoated marmalade-lovin' bear

I would like to officially apologize to Katullus

Thank you. Though don't worry, had I bothered to check through the history of MeFi posts about Sigur Rós I would have realized that they are a hot-button topic. Not on a decircumclawcision level, but apparently they raise people's hackles. I was just taken by surprise.
posted by Kattullus at 9:44 PM on October 11, 2007

Hey, carfilhiot, you still out there? You settle down yet? C'mon in here and have one'a these beers, yo! Everything's cool! Heck, we'll even throw on a Sigur Ros record* so's you can, like, get down and all!

*After we've left

After we've left

Hell no! Once we're good and drunk I'll teach you to dance to Sigur Rós!
posted by Kattullus at 9:56 PM on October 11, 2007

Though don't worry, had I bothered to check through the history of MeFi posts about Sigur Rós I would have realized that they are a hot-button topic.

I didn't know it was a hot-button topic either; I just can't study to it. The falsetto drives me nuts.

...So essentially what I'm trying to say is that I'm a jerk on my own, not some sort of johnny-come-lately trying to jump on the anti-Sigur-Rós bandwagon.

Posers.

Really though, this is currently a somewhat touchy subject... my ipod died a few days ago, so now I'm held hostage to coffeeshop music while studying -- which is about 6 to 10 hours a day. I'm sure you can imagine how wonderful that is. It did drive me home earlier, and it's put me in a very bad mood.

It's really too bad; Sigur Rós would be pretty good studying music without the singing.

You might like this song by them which features a singer of traditional Icelandic poetry. Jónsi, the main singer, doesn't utter a peep through the whole song. And here's an instrumental, their cover of the jingle Icelandic state radio plays before it's funeral announcements. It was the final song in the movie Angels of the Universe. The cover is progtastic.

Thanks!

There's a lot of stuff I'd like to listen to while studying, of course -- but see above comment re: broken ipod. I'll try to bribe the coffeeshop workers though. :)

I'll try to bribe the coffeeshop workers though

Don't try to bribe them with coffee, it never works.
posted by Kattullus at 10:13 PM on October 11, 2007

Well, frankly, the basic problem is that playing annoying music is the sine qua non of working at a coffeeshop. So it's a Catch-22.

Hey, you guys gonna talk or drink? I've already downed two of these Bods and you're not even halfway through your first!
posted by flapjax at midnite at 10:24 PM on October 11, 2007

I'm only saying that cuz there'll be nothing left for you but this Icelandic swill if you don't stop yappin' and start downin'!

That reminds me of one of my favorite Finnish jokes. Pekka had been living in America for a decade. He flew home to Finland for the first time and was met at the airport by his brother Toivonen. Toivonen took his brother to the family sauna and they started to drink vodka. After sitting in the sauna for several hours and going through a few bottles, Pekka turns to his brother and says: "Toivonen, my dear brother, how is our mother these days?" To which Toivonen replied: "Pekka, are we here to talk, or to drink?"

Ooh, those filthy little backtaggers! Isn't that still illegal in, like, Alabama?
posted by Abiezer at 1:41 AM on October 12, 2007

Abizer, everything's illegal in Alabama. They'll put your ass under the jail for even thinking about jaywalking, much less backtagging. And if you do it on a Sunday, boy, you in a heap of trouble!
posted by flapjax at midnite at 2:02 AM on October 12, 2007

Still worth visiting on a Sunday for the blind boys singing, though.

Heh heh! No argument there!

(BTW, didja happen to know that Alabama's my home state? Born'n'raised in Birmingham...)

It's all a mystery to me, flapjax - I never made it across the Atlantic. Pretty much everything I know about you I learned from watching Aly Bain doing his Down Home tour on the telly. We hear so little about your nation in other media!
