Hello, Radios! September 9, 2007 6:34 AM   Subscribe

I'll be doing a short, on-air, phoned in interview with Ronald Jenkees of youtube fame this Wednesday starting at 3pm (eastern standard time). You can listen to it live here. There will be a recording on that site shortly thereafter. If there are any questions the MeFi crowd would like me to ask, post them.

That's pretty sweet. I love the theme song he wrote for the Sports Guy podcasts on espn.com.

But, once again: this is not what metatalk is for. Metatalk is not your blog or your advertising space, even if I personally happen to think that what you are advertising is cool.

I was going to post to projects, but it seemed like more of an update to an existing thread.

Yeah, this is kind of a self link.

Hey, at least he's not charging us to attend.

Self links aren't kosher in metatalk? I would dig up examples, but I'm too lazy - I thought it was standard practice to do follow up like this when it was related to an existing thread, as oppose to posting in Projects (which is intended only for long term, serious effort sort of things).

I'll be doing laundry and housework all day today. You guys can come over and hang out if you want.

phrontist, it's a bone of contention for a lot of folks. We just had this conversation a couple of days ago; I like what madamjujujive said then:

I don't think these types of notices belong here. Because they don't scale - lots of members probably have events. Because they are self promotion. Because they do seem too much like a free ad...I wouldn't mind hearing about other events, I just don't think it belongs here. But I would support an events calendar or feature of some kind.

Oh, meant to add that I didn't have a problem with this one as much as some of the others, because of the recent thread angle.

And because Ronald Jenkes rocks.

phrontist: it seemed like more of an update to an existing thread.

An existing thread that remains open. Update the original thread; no need to start a new one.

If it was Metafilter's Own Adam Savage it would be fine.

I have no doubt that phrontist posted this for our benefit, not his. This kind of self-link is just fine.

Metafilters own phrontist! Hurray!

I get it. A reversed snark thread. Very clever.

Perhaps it's more reasonable to note that he posted it for the benefit of both himself and us.

I would be okay if the phrase "metafilter's own" never crossed my eyes ever again.

Unlike the music gig thread, phrontist isn't going to make more money if anyone here listens to his show, I don't think. So it's not as bad as that. Still iffy though. But I missed that Ronald Jenkees thread before so all is forgiven.

Is there an open-access calendar (aside from upcoming, which seems slow and crappy of late) that would let all metafilter members post events notices? (Even a way to do an ingroup only version of upcoming, I guess.)

Yeah, I'm beginning to think that's a necessary outlet. These self-promos (which at first did not bother me) are becoming more frequent. Give people a venue for them without cluttering up MetaTalk.

I would just point out the fact that this thread is full of comments about whether or not this sort of post is appropriate, and devoid of any questions for Mr. Jenkees; seems to give weight to the idea that these sorts of posts aren't Meta material.
