1. Please stop using the pre tag to quote, it breaks scrolling in Firefox.
2. I agree, mostly, but you have to realize that the pretense of "wide swath of opinion" is mostly a giant sham. The breakdown is 90% left, 5% right, 5% anarchist/libertarian. So expecting there to be a lack of consensus, to some extent, around political issues is sort of irrational.
I, for one, revel in the fact that my politics are non-mainstream and "persecuted" here. It tickles my victim complex, provides me with a readily accessible source of righteous indignation, and gives an outlet to my logorrhea.

You should use the blockquote tag to blockquote, as opposed to the pre tag, which you should use for preformated text. That's some HTML 201 for ya.

also, are you for real? I agree that contrary to fourcheesemac's opinion metafilter isn't for newsfilter, but since when are people not allowed to annoy you? I don't give a fuck if her trying to drive people to a crusade against Republicans makes you put needles in your eyes, she's still aloud to say it. People talk about taking action in political threads all the time, and they use the word "our" as a convenient way to address the people who agree with them all the time. What on earth has your day been like that this seemed like a reasonable way to spend your time?

Shit like that should be the universally agreed upon grounds for a MetaFilter banning.
As for the advocacy, well, fcm was mostly talking with like-minded people. Getting all advocacy in that context isn't anything new here.
And, yeah, NewsFilter is bad. But we go allow Big Important Breaking Stories (BIBS). What qualifies for that is contentious, however. I'm in no position to argue against an AG resignation post, as I made the Rove post in what was probably a moment of weakness when I succumbed to the urge created as I realized that the story hadn't yet appeared on MeFi. If I had kept my wits about me, I'd have realized that I don't frickin' like these sorts of posts. But, no, I had to go and hypocritize myself.

None of those letters or numbers seem random. Instead, I can detect concentration involved in selecting them. No doubt you went to school for this, likely studying under the great Du Champ given your preference for numbers before letters. Your intensity, particularly in the way X is used, evoking both kisses and treasure, is to be admired. U is sublime as always, but then I've always been a big fan of U since it was featured in the '92 spread by Keloc.
The less said about the 2, the better. Really, you're much better than that. Whatever I feel for the power of X coupled with the curves of U and grounded by the strength of 1, that damn 2 is always there, like you spat on a Renoir. So either you need more study and training (which I doubt), or the 2 was the most willful of choices, which screams of artifice and sends the rest of your work crashing to the ground.

I think a fair number of us consider "Take it to MeTa" whiny and lame enough not to bear a reaction.
If someone's derailing the thread to pick on you, flag it.
(For the record, I don't think those types of comments wind up being deleted often enough. Explaining beautifully why another user is a douche isn't my idea of contributing. Neither is telling them to "Take it to MeTa," which is really about the same as "Talk to the hand," or "Why don't you cry about it?" in tone.)
If you want to tell them off in return, and you can't because they don't give you an email address, well, as is often advocated in AskMe, write a letter and destroy it. It doesn't matter. They're not likely to change for you.
I don't like MeTa as the prattletattlebattledurkadurkahurfdurf room, and even though I think you won't feel vindicated until fourcheesemac comes in here to squabble with you, I don't think we need to listen in to that, not because I don't love a good schoolyard fight here in the grey, but because this isn't a very interesting one. Not rich enough in vitamin flameout. Close.

I'm aware that there is some thread-generated activism here, and there's a difference, IMO, between activism coming from an activist post, and activism coming from broad NewsFilter. An FPP about the U.S. Attorney General invites a lot of discussion on multiple topics. Repeatedly interjecting with a follow-up agenda is simply an exclusionary derail that overshadows the rest of the discussion.

Not to ride your ass or anything, but no it doesn't. Multiple people can talk about different aspects of the same topic in a thread. It happens in almost every thread. It's understandable that in this instance that it really distracts from the rest of the discussion for you but it is on topic and there's no reason why talking about contacting your representative, even annoyingly so, would overshadow the rest of the discussion at large. In fact, there's plenty of discussion continuing to happen in the thread as we speak.

Staging an actual confrontation between two users in MeTa is like arranging to have a duel at dawn, but by the time you get there the word has spread far and wide and there are so many rubberneckers that you get lost in the crowd. Meanwhile the balloon vendors are blocking everyone's view, the port-a-potties are starting to overflow, and you can't hear yourself think above the mariachi music. Hopefully the sheriff or a deputy shows up and fires a few warning shots to disperse the crowd before people start flipping cars.

Speaking of J. Gelis and random letters and numbers, have you read Lester Bang's article "My night of ecstasy with the J. Geils Band"? In it he tells the story of when he played typewriter with J. Geils & Company, live, on stage, at Cobo Hall, in 1974. According to Lester, this is what he wrote that night: "VDKHEOQSNCHSHNELXIEN(+&H-SXN+(E@JN?."
Just saying.

shmegegge asked: "What on earth has your day been like that this seemed like a reasonable way to spend your time?"
Well, I for one wish I'd learn a better excuse for cleaning the bathroom than overflowing the toilet the day after a big greasy meal, IYKWIM. Some days I moan to myself "Poor Memphis!"; today I afterthought "Forget downstream, poor downstairs!"
Oh, I'm sorry, you weren't talking to/about me, were you. Oh well, let's make this a general derail: let's make this the "Bitch About My Shitty Day" thread (though one need not take it quite so literally).

I dunno, it would be nice to read a thread with the count turned off sometimes.

Solution (Part One): Change the name "favorites" to "bookmarks."
Solution (Part Two): Ruthlessly mock anyone who points out how many bookmarks they have.
And how does anyone find out what percentage of their comments are favorited, anyway? The total number doesn't mean jack squat, so do people look through their entire comment history and do the math by hand? Yeegads.

There was a whole MeTa devoted to determining one's favorite percentage. The formula is: total contributions marked as a favorite by others, divided by a sum of total contributions (posts + comments across all sites).

LOL. Mkultra, chill out. I'm sorry I said "our next move" and should have said "for those of us who think the Bush administration is a sack of lying shit, our next move . . ."
My bad for assuming that the evidence of the content on this site -- that MeFi's membership is 95 percent left-leaning and 99 percent Bush-despising -- entitled me to an unmodified "our" in the moment of flushed excitement immediately following the resignation of Abu Gonzalez. I didn't mean to offend the sensibilities of the 4 members who think Bush should be allowed to appoint the ghost of Al Capone as the next AG.
And yes, I am aware of the endless debates over "newsfilter" posts. I go back several years here. I take the side that says newsfilter is appropriate when the news is big, it's the raging topic across the web, generating lots of great web content in one great burst of energy, and when a good number of MeFites are compelled to discuss it with their friends. I didn't make the original post. But 187 comments (and growing) says to me a lot of people found it unobjectionable, especially since the vast majority of them are by "our" sort (and indeed, you say you yourself hate the Bush administration).
I don't include my email in my profile because I learned the hard way in my last MeFi incarnation that there are a few nasty people here who like to cross the line from spirited argument to personal attack's in one's offline life.
But really, mea maxima culpa for using the wrong pronoun and destroying Metafilter forever.
And I'm a "he." Hugs and kisses, ya big lunk.

To which I will add that I, like many here, do make the unfortunate mistake of assuming a largely US-based readership on this site. That it happens to be true doesn't mean one shouldn't acknowledge that non-USian perspectives are represented in the collective "our."

And I spend all my

I was going to write a quatrain on how this was so boring that it didn't touch me at all, but I was distracted by the soft white noise of the airconditioner.
I hear you, Burhanistan, but might I also suggest the gentle hum of the refrigerator? I find that in comparison to the AC, the fridge often has more pleasing variations, and those sudden shifts of tempo and/or sonic texture that make for a most interesting listening experience.
And of course, the washing machine, when you really wanna rock out.

Ethereal Bligh writes "Shortly, two out of five people will have the experience of browsing online porn and coming across an 'amateur' video featuring their mother."
That estimate is probably a little high. Even if 100% of mothers had porn online the chance of coming across your particular mother has got to be less than 40%.
GuyZero writes "How would you rack one of those? And who makes cases bigger than 4U these days? Not to mention what '12X' means - it's like the fat pants of the server world."
I had a Wang mini that was rack mountable. Must have been at least 20-24U.

Given the 90% probability* that fourcheesemac was male (since confirmed), to me it just seemed like you were going for that added edge of 'I didn't like what you said AND I'M GOING TO CALL YOU A GIRL'. Personally, if I deliberately gave no clues about my gender, I would probably be expecting people to refer to me as 'him'. So, please explain?

That is, if you were asking about the "Reno's" references. And flapjax's reference is to a lyric in Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues.

Oh, and speaking of Full House, did anyone else hear Bob Saget on Wait Wait Don't Tell Me this weekend? Hilarious!
Yes, it was funny. But did you see his new HBO special? He actually went out of his way to be unfunny. Very dirty, very un-Danny Tanner, but very, very unfunny. Seriously, the stupid voices on America's Home Videos where he does the interior monologue of the fat grandma sitting on the dock wearing water skis and tremulously holding the boat's line...fucking George Carlin compared to this.

The "Folsom Prison Blues" bit I got.
Reno used to drive a pickup. She might be into that reference.
Reminded me of an old list of rules that went along with a "Blues Name" generator (email, manually operated, not a web form -- yes, I do remember that far back, my name is not 'Alberto'). One of the rules was that, regardless of your standing relative to the other rules (e.g., you cannot sing the blues if you are named 'Muffy' or 'Tad'), you were allowed to sing the blues if you have killed a man in Reno. My friends and I thought there were a few other cities that should qualify -- Memphis, Kansas City and Tulsa were strong contenders, as I recall.

some good aged cheddar for delicious sharpness, gruyere and fontina for melty goodness, and rich, creamy brie to take it to that OMG delicious heart attack level.

Also, when parmesan is shredded, it is considered a cheese. When it is grated, it is a condemint.

Before getting into the meat of things, I'd like to address this from your callout: In my personal list of "Things MetaFilter is Not", I'd rank "Popularity Contest" above "Rallying Tool". Let me be the first to tell you:
First, a bit of background. In the Gonzales thread this morning, she first heralded MeFi's posting of the news ahead of CNN, et. al. She then proceeded to repeatedly encourage participants in the thread to write their Senators. When it was pointed out that a "recess appointment" of a new AG was unlikely, she landed with this gem: My response is here, to which I was called out for a public fracas.
fcm, if you've been here as long as you say, you've surely seen endless arguments about Newsfilter. Again and again, the de facto "policy" is that SingleLinkNewsStories are not MeFi "the way it was intended", but they're quietly accepted because people like to yammer on and on about big stories. So someone posted it to MeFi before DailyKos or the Huffington Post or whomever. Big deal. MeFi isn't here to "scoop" anyone. MeFi is not about being "first", it's about being "good".
Personally, I like the political discussion around here. It's unfortunate that the actual posts are generally craptacular, but MeFi is one of the (increasingly) very few places on the web where I can find a cogent argument from someone I completely disagree with. And as you said, there is "plenty of advocacy (and links to relevant resources) in most political threads here." I had no problem with your first comment. It's the repeated rallying that came after. Put simply, it's a distraction for those who are interested in talking about various aspects of what happened. And when you took it upon yourself to keep going with your "Plan B", you went into full derail mode. MetaFilter is simply not a tool for organizing political activity. If you want to get into it about that point, by all means, but I think you'll find few allies in that fight.
If you're inclined to activism, there are plenty of fellow travellers to be found at places like MoveOn.org or the aforementioned political blogs.
What REALLY irked me, however was this: "Our"? To paraphrase your in-thread callout of me, who the fuck do you think you are to presume to speak for Metafilter?
In spite of what a lot of people apparently think, MeFi is not some Democratic haven; there is a wide swath of political opinion here. And then there are the folks who don't even live in the U.S. Your naive assumption is disrespectful to a lot of users who contribute a lot of good content.
I think that about covers it. Feel free to respond, either here or using the email address in my profile.
