New profile feature: link to your stuff at other social sites. [more inside]
posted by pb (staff) to Feature Requests at 4:32 PM (130 comments total) 6 users marked this as a favorite

Flickr photos on profile pages went over well, so we just added the ability to link to other community sites from your profile page. To add a link, click on "My Profile" at the top of any page, "edit profile" from that page, and scroll down to the bottom of the "Customize Metafilter" page. Next to "Also On", choose a service name from the drop-down menu and then enter your username at that site. If you want to add another link, click "add another service" and you'll get another menu/name combo. When you're finished, click "Save your Preferences" to save everything.

Once set, check out the left column of your profile. You'll see a list of little icons for the sites you link to. Each icon links to your page at that particular site. Check out mathowie's profile for an example. He has links to his stuff at del.icio.us, digg, Last.fm, Twitter, etc.

If you want to remove a link to a site you've added, go back to editing your profile. Clear your username for the link you want to remove and click "Save your Preferences". The link won't show up on your profile anymore.

As with Flickr, we plan on pulling in your data from these other sites eventually where possible. First up will probably be your x latest del.icio.us links since it seems there's a bunch of MeFites using that. As with anything new and Web, there are probably a few bugs to be squashed. Post 'em if you got 'em.

We'll be adding some note about this to the FAQ including how to get your real login name on Flickr etc. so if you notice anything that could use a little extra spelling out, please let us know. Props to LibraryThing for the good idea.

pb: "Flickr photos on profile pages went over well..."

Okay, it's nice that I can link to my Wikipedia username and whatnot, but I think the reason that Flickr went over so well is because you got extra content on your profile page and you got the all recent photos page.

Is it possible to get these same sort of things here? Recent music listened to by Mefites on Last.fm? Recent Twits?

Gah, thanks stavros. Replace my entire earlier comment with the following:
Wow, this is fantastic, pb. Thanks to you and Matt and Jess and cortex for putting up with users who don't RTFM and forget to say thanks. I'm looking forward to further developments in the exciting world of MeFi profile technology.

jessamyn, I'm pretty close but I don't have an account at every site listed in the menu. I bet that's going to be an edge case.
posted by pb (staff) at 4:53 PM on August 7, 2007

I bet that's going to be an edge case.

Waaaah pb called me an edge case!!

Well, I have eleven now, though to be fair anything else I would add at this point would be sites that I don't really participate in. It might not be intuitive that once you have eleven you have to blank one out in order to add a new one. I saw the "11 sites max" when I was trying to add a 12th when I was added four at once, but once I went back to customize my user page, it wasn't immediately obvious why I couldn't add a 12th service (except that I remembered that it was 11 max). Maybe a little "you have reached the maximum" message?

Also, so everyone can see these links right, not just logged in users?
posted by ALongDecember at 5:42 PM on August 7, 2007

SportsFilter, Facebook, and some other service we'd like to add use numeric IDs in the URL or long alphanumeric strings. People don't generally know these numbers offhand. (And yes, this is the pot talking to the kettle.) So we just need to have some help documentation available for some of those services that tell people how to find those IDs. Until then, we've gone with the "easy" ones.

Thanks Plutor, but we are following the zero-one-infinity rule. We allow one set of up to 11 links.
posted by pb (staff) at 5:46 PM on August 7, 2007

Tiny bug: The labels aren't linked quite right. The label for the Flickr field has for="aimname" instead of "flickrname". And the labels for the new fields have for="service_n" instead of "servicename_n".

I do like how we can rearrange the favicons by choosing which services are first and last.

I reiterate: Digg sucks so much it's like an electrified sucking machine. I can't even remember if I have an account there or not. Don't care, frankly.

But I don't begrudge it being in the options for this feature. I just like talking about how much Digg sucks.

I also can't figure out how to make LinkedIn work.

I'm not sure if this works for everyone, but if you go look at your public profile ID (you'll have to log in if you haven't already) it will show you your public profile URL and whatever is at the end is what you need to enter.

So mine is http://www.linkedin.com/in/jessamyn for example.

We're planning to add the other major IM services. There are a lot of livejournallers here. The blogging sites are a little difficult because the user id line is a bunch of numbers, so not as easy as entering your username as pb said above, but we're working on it.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 8:06 PM on August 7, 2007

And are there many LiveJournallers here?

I've been on Livejournal longer than you've been on MetaFilter. In fact, I've been on LJ for longer than cortex has been on MetaFilter. Save your hatred for the cross-burning, Adolf. Most of the livejournallers I know are happier and more well-adjusted than the sort of cranks we keep around in this place.

I'd love facebook, so I went to find my user id: if you go to your profile page, I assume that your user id is the string xxxx at the end - http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=xxxxx
In my case this is 9 digits long, but I don't know if this is constant. Is this the sort of thing you need?

We got this idea from LibraryThing and I'm pretty sure they just list the names. If you thought 11 tiny icons look kinda thrown up there, you should see what a huge paragraph of service names all hyperlinked looks like (hint: it's worse). We shot for a solution that allows you to convey a lot of info in a small space, and favicons were the way to go.

More blogging services, please (Blogger, TypePad, Movable Type, etc.)

Blogger, Typepad, and MT don't have nice simple (guessable) user pages. The list of social services is a way to share your user page on other systems. Stuff like MT doesn't have that, so it's not listed.

Aren't Facebook profiles only visible to people in your "network", who are also logged into Facebook (or even less people, if you set the privacy settings)? Doesn't really make sense to provide a way to link to them if no one is going to be able to see them.

Facebook has "public profiles", that will show even to non-members. The URL looks like:

It's pretty worthless, and you need both the name and the # for it to work.
posted by smackfu at 8:30 PM on August 7, 2007

Hmm, that's true. If you use the profile link of someone you have no connection to, you see what you would in a search result (photo if available, plus option to add to friends or send message). I don't know if that's worth having or not.

Not that it matters, because there's nothing there, but one of my Vox links throws up an error when clicked on from my profile:

Good luck... some of them are in closed private beta.

Yeah, I would have taken one of those hugs you gave out a while ago if not for the fact that you're a total pimp and I'm still not sure if that's 100% free from its literal origin, and if not, what implicit contractual obligation or pimplike power to turn out by touch such a hug might carry, in these mean metaphorical metafilter streets.

Any chance of getting Xbox Live and Wii support?

Hah. I just finished making my own text-link "Also on" list in my profile in the past week. I left the ones that aren't in the list.

And you should see the stack of badges (service-provided and self- created - including MeFi) on my page.

Smugmug? Any possibility?

I set up a page on the MeFi Wiki. If people can list the sites they'd like to see and also an example of what a profile page/user page URL looks like, that would be helpful. The main page of the wiki explains what you need to do to be able to edit it.

Since there's no page support for Wii and DS Friend Codes, would it be possible to have the icons reveal said codes on mouse over?

Second the request for Wii codes.

That would be pretty slick.

I would like to see a few additions, primarily a search function to view all the users who have chosen to associate with specific services.

I'd also like to see the AIM/ICQ/Flickr section of the profile condensed into the Social Networking pane if possible, I'm not sure I perceive a distinction there.

Another vote for Xbox/Wii codes, although I see they are now represented in the Wiki.
