I am so goddamn tired of being rickrolled in the comments. I think somebody spilled some 4chan on my metafilter.
Is this something I'd need a [More Inside] to understand?
Is this:
- A genuine concern at people placing links to Rick Astley in comments (or similar bait-and-switch)?
- An attempt to throw together two amusing threads into one comment?

I googled it.
To be rickrolled is, when browsing internet forums one comes across a link in a thread expecting to find one thing, but ends up at a website which has nothing to do with the topic being discussed in the thread.
Methinks you don't get Metafilter.

The sudden uptick in rickrolling/tayrolling has covered the span from annoying to bullshitty pretty quickly. It's weak sauce on a good day, and approximately twice was enough. We're unlikely to blink before nuking that shit going forward. Shit like this, in particular, is asking for trouble.

Tell you what, bucko—start changing one out of every four interesting links madamjujujive posts to blort to a Rick/Tay video. Doing otherwise would be overprotecting her from the nasty intarwebz.
Let 4chan be 4chan and Stile be Stile. We don't actually need to encourage the shittiest, guileless web dorkery to set up shop on the site just to prove how much fucking buddho-anarchist cred we've got; and if avoiding that means axing moronic hyperlink jokes before they set up like kudzu, that's what we're gonna do. If that breaks your heart, there's plenty of room elsewhere on this great big nasty interwebsph34r. I hear SA has a lot more mods to bitch out, ferexample.

Rickrolling is annoying, but, honestly, has less of an impact on overall site quality than a slow shift in the userbase toward people who strike me as not really getting the Mefi.
I'll cite two, since I see you both posting in this thread: Burhanistan and The Deej.
Burhanistan, you just seem committed to drive-by assholism as a way of life. You don't seem to care for anyone or anything that gets posted here, but instead of taking the obvious measure of finding a web community more to your liking, you have an apparent compulsion to express your disdain by dumping turds in one thread after another. It's charmless and I'm amazed you haven't been called out on it before. As far as I can tell, you add precisely zero to this site.
The Deej, I'm almost sorry to call you out, because in sharp contrast to Burhanistan you seem like you want to contribute. But you've also got a real tone-deafness to the quality (I feel) has defined Mefi comments for a very long time now - you seem intent on turning one thread after another into a private little chatrooms with wendell-grade "humor." Please stop. As someone without much of a sense of comedic timing or zing my ownself, believe me, I can recognize the symptoms: you have the Anti-Funny.
I don't post very much, so it's not as if I'm personally blameless in this long, slow slide. And if pressed, of course, I would have trouble defining that elusive Mefi quality in terms that any three of us would agree upon. But I do think the site has been slipping lately. It's the You-Tubing, the rickrolling, the hegemonic feel of lame, Deej-style discourse, even the appearance of other and perhaps subtler red flags. (A clarion warning sign of Not Getting It for me, for example, is when users refer impersonally to "the mods" or "the admins.") I'm at a loss for what to do about it, other than calling out some of the things that strike me as more egregious outliers.

Burhanistan? You're joking. Or maybe all your years as a "noted writer and critical futurist" have warped you, or maybe it's your years in the "United States Army's reserve component Special Operations Command as a Psychological operations specialist" that rendered you.
Tellya what Sergeant, why don't you go back to really heavy matters of universal importance, leaving Metafilter's userbase to flounder gratefully without you. You have better things to do, don't you.

This is even better than the anti-cortex shit-fit. adamgreenfield, thank god you write hypnotically boring technology crap rather than comedy, as you seem to have no discernible sense of humor and would quickly have to find a real job. Burhanistan posts a lot, by my lazy standards anyway, and occasionally he throws in a loopy '80s video or snarky remark. Heaven forbid! He also throws in lots of intelligent analysis and a sense of fun. You contribute a grouchy tirade against a harmless and generally obvious practice that will soon be replaced by some other innocuous throw-away joke link.
Do you not see that davy is jerking your chain a little here? Do you not see that you over-reacted to his modest provocation in a hilariously self-important way? Come on now, man up a bit. You don't have to complain about every last thing you don't like.

...wendell-grade "humor."
No wonder TheDeej makes me laugh so often; we're both cut from the same Comedy Cow.
For the record, wendell-grade humor is USDA inspected and approved and goes through 16 additional quality checks. While not at all comparable in taste to Lore-grade, yeti-grade, IRFH-grade or the ever-the-more-rare StanChin-grade, it is an economical everyday alternative that provides 100% MDR of laughter for those without impaired humor systems.

Well Mister_A, I actually haven't Haimburgled in many weeks when I was out of town. Cortex is anti-Haimburgling, so I really ration and savor the Haim for special occasions & comedic effect now.
As for the dis against The Deej & Burhanistan? I know I can be a Derail Queen so my word probably means little. But I like what they both bring to MeFi. Over time I've gotten a far better idea of their personalities, their interests, their senses of humor, & of what they are about as people from their writing than I have gotten from adamgreenfield's contributions. But YMMV. I'm sure there are people who feel I don't add to Metafilter either. And to those people? I just say this.

first of all, Haimburgling is hysterical just because of what it's called. second of all, Beastinging is the much better name for the bea arthur version.

Why shucks *kicks instep* thanks ma'am. Back atcha. Yeah, pretty much, this is me. I don't put on any phoniness here, or play a character. That's why my profile is transparent. If I have a lame joke for a thread, I do try to keep it on topic. And if anyone thinks what I post is lame, you should see the stuff I start to type and never hit "post"!
Wendell:
I fear for what doesn't pass the 16-point inspections, and where that gets used! My leftovers go to Fark under the name Fuzzy Skinner.
Ironically, some lame stuff I post is pretty much self-aware lameness. Like a spoof of lameness, almost. Here's how to tell the difference: anything you think is really funny and witty is meant to be funny and witty. Anything that you groan at and think is annoying and lame is my parody of lameness. Yeah. That's it. Really. Honest.

Before we try to replace Rickrolling with Beastinging, let's keep in mind the power of Rickrolling is contained within the fact that the stupid song is so. damn. catchy. that you hear it for the rest of the day/week/month! Heck, I am hearing it right now! I plugged my iPod into my receiver and cranked up my vintage Allison Six speakers to try and drown out the voice of Rick Astley with a mix of Pink Floyd, Beck, Lisa Loeb, and Ryan Adams.
It didn't work. But I'm never gonna give up!
Shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's a dog eat dog world there lil missy.
You'll notice I deliberately did NOT say we should not Haimburgle, I only said we should not BeaSting, precisely because Haimburgling indeed has the potential to be, as you say, the way of the future. And I would not want to toss what little influence I have in the path of the Haimburgling juggernaut.
You would not want Haimburgling to be included in the things we should not rush to! See?
It all makes perfect sense!
You know you're my favorite MeFite!

That's what makes it a better prank - you get the fun of misdirecting people, but you don't add insult to injury by sending them to something lame. In addition, there are a lot of good Rundgren videos on Youtube, so you don't have to use the same song like you do with a Rickroll.
Or you could go with the Logroll.

I have no problem with something funny (or even not so funny) being said as a throwaway remark. The problem is that it's not enough to make a joke once -- no, every other thread becomes a meme hijack. So apropos of nothing, everyone's rickrolling or otherwise loling and it might be the funniest damn joke in the world but on 75th repetition it's water torture. When a quarter of the people in a thread are doing their own little mini-meme hijacks? It's like hanging out with your uncle who thinks he's funny, and has the flower in his lapel that shoots water and the fake vomit and whoopee cushions to prove it, but his funny stopped circa 1963. No one could stand to break his heart and tell him, poor guy. No one wants to be mean to their well-meaning unfunny uncle. So a thread with a decent chance of being a good conversation is lost in a sea of one-liners and we are treated to the comedy stylings of 17 Uncle Als instead of actual dialog.
Since no one here is my uncle Al, I'll give it to you straight: overkill is the death of comedy. For the love of all that is holy, if you are a compulsive rickroller memejockey, show a little mercy. Spritzer just isn't funny to a drowning man.

The only way Carson Daly could have done that meme successfully would be to clandestinely set up a live performance by Rick Astley and spend most of the hour hyping the crowd for a 'special mystery guest performance.'
What frightens me is that I very much enjoy listening to the song, once it's on... watching, however, not so much.

I agree entirely, melissa may. Bill Hicks did a great routine on just that subject. One of my favorites.

"Brevity is the soul of wit."
That is one of my favorite sayings. Nothing ruins a good joke or a pithy saying more than going on and on and on about it. It should stand on its own, without explanation. If it doesn't stand on its own, it's not brief. And if it needs explanation, it's not witty. By its very definition, wit is brief. If you have to explain what you said over and over, it loses its impact. Best to just say it, then let it sit. Those who are meant to understand it, will. For those who don't get it, no amount of explanation will help them understand it. And even if they do "understand" it in an academic sense, after a long explanation, they won't appreciate it in the same manner of someone with whom the line connects immediately. There is no substitute for being succinct, and getting to your point without superfluous explanation and ongoing chatter. This merely clouds the issue, and weakens the very point you were trying to convey in the first place. You may as well not have said it at all. Please. Please. Heed my words.

Good lord! I'm just young enough that I had no idea this song was his, even though I worked in a drug store for an entire year. And what a disconnect between that song and the outfit he's wearing in the video. Craziness.
If only we still lived in a world where skinny fugly guys could be rock stars, I'd have a shot.
