Twofer: Los Angeles and Portland meetups? July 14, 2007 9:23 PM Subscribe
I'm visiting Portland, OR from July 21 to July 27, and it would be really groovy to meet up with some MeFites while I'm up there. Any takers? Suggestions on location and time welcome.
Also, I'll be at the Grand Hallows Ball in Los Angeles on July 20, ready to get my grubby hands on my copy of Harry Potter and the Somethingsomethingwhatever. There's a good chance I'll be wearing a cape. Any LA peeps who'd like to join me would be good company.
fuzzbean, you should come to Dutton's on San Vicente (in Brentwood) for the Potter launch. It's WAY more charming, since it's a little indie bookstore (and one of the best bookstores in L.A., which is saying something given the size of the city). Dutton's was recently (literally, last week) spared destruction at the hands of condo developers, so you know it's an exceptionally magical place. Plus, you know, I'll be there.

Yup, librarina, I know Portland is TEH MEFITE PARTAY CENTRAL right now...but I can't be there tonight, and I was hoping mebbe a few others would be up for another micro-meetup in a week or so. Am bummed about present lack of presence.

As long as it isn't on the 27th, I'll be there (wherever it ends up - but I still like the Club 21 suggestion). I'll even bore you with stories about Portland's long history of vice and human trafficking!

Fixed that for you.
I would also be down with Club 21...

I'm definitely interested in hanging out (but not available on 21 & 23). The description of Club 21 sounds cool to me. It's only about a mile from the Lloyd Center MAX station too.

It's no more than a 15-minute walk from the Lloyd Center Max stop. 10 blocks up NE Multnomah, lake a left, and 5 or 6 blocks south on NE 21st.
Look for the sign that says "Steaks for your enjoyment!"

Since nobody else seems to be willing to suggest a day for Portland, I will suggest Monday 23 July. One week from today.

Monday the 23rd sounds promising for both coined and me. And Club 21 seems the general favorite, so I'm good with that (it's also less than a mile from where I'm staying, so woo! for stumbling home.)

I'll gladly pop in to Club 21 as it is pretty great and about four blocks from my house.
Know, though, that it is not very big and has no pool tables. If folks wanted a larger, slightly quieter, but equally semi-divey place, (with pool tables - I would love to throw down at some pool) I'd toss out the Nighthawk as a possibility.

Both of those things are true.
But it is usually very empty, and there are some very large tables. It would easily accomodate a group of 8 - 10.
If we think there will be more of us, then we may need to rethink our venue.

Nice, I was just thinking it might be nice to meet some Portland Mefites in more conversational surroundings. Count me in for the 23rd.
Being a West sider I'm not all that familiar with the places you've mentioned but they sound fine by me. The only pool hall I've been to in town is the Rialto downtown, and their upstairs room is good for events, but may be too big for a small meetup (I think there are about five pool tables and a dozen small-to-medium table-tables).

Delicious. A meetup that I'm not out of town for. Berbati's on SW 2nd has a nice large pool table section, but is smoky as hell.

I just remembered that the Mash Tun on NE Alberta would probably be large enough to accomodate 10-15 people on a Monday night, it has a pool table, and it has a wide range of beer.

Mash Tun seems pretty attractive to me, although admittedly further off than Club 21. Despite that, I'd vote for it if enough other people are interested. (The non-smoking is a BIG plus.) Any takers?

I'll be there for the 23rd and if anyone wants a ride, send me an email (I can fit up to three reasonably-sized folks).
I cannot speak well of Club 21 or Mash Tun (haven't been to either); current or future considerations may be Thatch Tiki Bar (they make a Donkey Punch drink but no pool tables) or Concordia Ale House (pool tables, smoking outside, and decent pub grub)

Concordia is awesome and a local haunt of mine. I highly recommend it as it has a truly kick ass beer menu and quite decent food. Two pool tables that are decent but not great. Usually not crowded, but they have two sports tv's in there, so it kind of depends on whats on.
Unfortunately, I'm not likely to be able to make it. Possibly a bit later in the evening, but I've got something scheduled for 6pm that night already.
Where ever it is though, I'll try to swing by and see who's still there after I'm done.

Both bus #8 (which stops on 15th & Alberta) and bus #9 (which stops at 27th & Alberta) should go by your hotel, fuzzbean, and then it's a short walk up (or down) Alberta.

I know everything is all locked up for the 23rd, fuzzbean, but you might want to check out the new McMenamin's Back Stage Bar at the Bagdad on your own time. It's got multiple pool tables, 70 foot ceilings, is quite definitely unique with a lot of different "spaces", and is conveniently located just off SE Hawthorne at SE 37th, on the 14 busline. Cheers.

They're not, like, evil or anything. At least as far as I know. But all they serve is overpriced, mediocre food (or, in the case of the Bagdad, TERRIBLE pizza...) and overpriced, mediocre beer.
Beautiful spaces, though, almost all of them.
Every time they convert some really cool space I think "That's awesome. Too bad it couldn't have been done by someone who serves decent food and decent beer."

Well, while I won't vouch so much for their food (pub grub, sometimes with a twist), McMenamin's does brew up some good house beers. Some of their food prices are a bit off, but you're paying for atmosphere as well.
The Kennedy School and Little Chapel of the Chimes are quite close to the Mash Tun, fuzzbean, so you can check out their aesthetic without a cross town bus trip. No pool at either place, though, except the soaking pool at the Kennedy, which you can use for $5.

i agree with dersins. even if they could just learn how to make good fries portland would be better off. they are nice enough to usually sell other people's (better) beer in addition to their own, at least at some of their places.

Anyway, for Portland: my preferences are for somewhere quieter, slightly more upscale, maybe someplace with a pool table and/or squashy couches. Quirky / comfy / pub-type atmosphere preferred. Needs to be accessible by public transit. I can't do anything on the 21st, but the other nights should all be free.
