mathowie on babies -- what else could MeTa be for? July 12, 2007 9:11 PM Subscribe
Fresh Haughey sighting in the wild: confirmed. Dispatch all units.
I am inordinately fond of ol' Leo. Having only discovered his existence a few months ago, I am now a stalwart listener to most of his dauntingly voluminous output.

I thought we agreed this kind of thing was creepy.

Just to clarify: There are no pictures of Matt Haughey sitting on babies at the other end of that link.
This is my sad face.

Did we? Well, I wouldn't want to be creepy.
Should I go take down all the photos of Matt I have in the corner of my bedroom now, the ones with the lipstick smears, scribbled incantations and sticky hanks of hair? The candles have been costing a freakin' fortune.

As I said on my blog, I sound like I was on 'ludes. I thought Leo would edit me down a bit but it's our entire skype call from start to finish uncut.

Leo Laporte reminds me why I hate so much of radio programming; he's got that overemoting voice (especially in the announcements! Jebus) that makes me want to call him up and ask him to calm down.

"The Founder of MetaFilter..."
Makes it sound like some kind of emeritus title, like #1 about to declare his retirement "in order to spend more time with my family"... Leo does know how to start the rumor mills working.
Fan mail from a founder?

Modulation, baby. I don't actually find him excessive in that way, most of the time, but the cookiecutter Network Newscaster Voice you always hear on TV, for example, annoys the piss out of me, so I get what you mean.
But then after twenty years of being in the classroom and giving innumerable corporate speeches and presentations and all that, I overmodulate too, all the time. People I've met have invariably asked me if I were a radio guy, but other than a few drunken guest appearances on campus radio way back when (my 23rd birthday party/concert was live on UBC's CITR), I've never been.

Funniest Matt sighting of the month for me goes to iamthebestartist (I'm assuming that the username is reflected onto metafilter.)
Anyway, the video's OK but the commentary comparing Matt to Heroes' character Sylar are hilarious.
Save the cheerleader Matt! Ha, ha. It's funny because it is true.

They don't do much editing on *any* of the TWiT shows. It's a podcast and no one's expecting a full production. Plus, that's what makes it intimate: flaws, flat jokes, and all. What I'm getting at is I know that, Matt, you spend tons of time editing audio for the podcast here, but you probably shouldn't worry about it. I mean, it's just us.

Following on from what yeti said: to be honest, I reckon you sounded a lot more engaging and natural talking to Leo and Megan than you ever have in the MeFi podcast.
Chill, have a few beers: let it roll. Podcast verité baby!

Actually, I totally dialed off on the editing. I spent hours editing the first 3 or 4 podcasts, but the last few are only cut for content. I can now get a show ready in about an hour, whereas before I was spending 6-8 hours clipping ums and ahs.
I just thought twit stuff had higher production values so I thought I'd be edited down, but they fly by the seat of their pants. I think the boingboing podcast is actually the most well-edited one I've done. They cut me down to the point where I sounded punchy and funnier than I really was.

Well, cool. From what you said about the 'ludes and all, I'd figured you'd sound halting and durrrr, but just the opposite.
FWIW, maybe it's just you getting more used to the whole podcasty getting-interviewed thing, but I reckoned you came off way way way better in this one than the boingboing one.

Also, I reckon with the radio background, Leo is pretty good at what he does, and that probably helps.

Leo is great, tho that Twit show on the iphone (two episodes ago) was just terrible. 20 minutes on what it was like to wait in line at the AT&T store? Man.

He's...going into the bathroom now...seems to be spending a lot of time near the medicine cabinet...now back toward the kitchen. He's standing still...standing still...back to the bathroom again—must've forgotten something.
Wait, he's approaching. 30 meters. 25 meters. 20 meters! That's not possible, that's—that's inside the room! 15 meters! 10 meters!
