Sidebar for partly-scheduled meetups? June 16, 2007 9:28 AM Subscribe
Could we have a section of the Upcoming Meetups sidebar for meetups that are in the works but don't have a date set?
"The way it works is like this:
1. someone proposes a meetup in the gatherings category, people mull over a location and a date. Eventually an actual date and location is proposed, then people start saying if they're coming or not.
2. Go ahead and post your meetup along with a link to the discussion thread about it.
3. If your meetup proposal is going nowhere, don't post it until a few people confirm
4. There's no reason to post a reminder thread about your meetup thread, since it will stay linked on the front page sidebar until it happens.
That's it! Hopefully, we won't see any more double posts about a single meetup anymore. I went ahead and deleted two from today alone."
sueinnyc, I think a good solution to the problem at hand is for the person who initiates the meetup proceedings pick the date and place. Or at least make a few plausible suggestions for both in the proposal. The threads that start off "Hey, let's meet! When and where?" tend not to go anywhere. hermitosis went off on exactly this problem in the recent 'last minute nyc' meetup. Folks seemed to agree with him.

If the basics of the meetup are established within a day or two, it can graduate to the sidebar and people will be able to find it easily. Let that be everyone's incentive for hammering out the bare minimum details (which can always be changed) as early in the thread as possible.
If the sidebar is totally glutted with meetups, post-meetups, and half-formed meetups, it will totally lose its effectiveness.

I keep your potential posts in my back pocket, quonsar. Warm from the farts and well away from the fish.

Wait a minute, then what's in this box I've been keeping labeled QUONSAR'S POTENTIAL POSTS?
*opens box*
Oh man, I wish I hadn't done that.

seem to slide off the front page before a decision is made
Sometimes I think that's a good thing -- it lets the host know people aren't ready and maybe have gone to too many already or there isn't enough of a demand for one.

It would be neat if the meetups in the sidebar had a little star next to them (like *) if there were new posts in the meetup thread since last you checked - a little reminder to go back and check the thread for any new info.

Melinika, if you comment in the meetup thread every time something new happens there it will bubble to the top of your Recent Activity page.

Quite often the decision to have a meetup in a particular timeframe is nailed down quite soon, but the exact time and venue are chosen at the last minute. The new system can't really cope with that.
