We had a few guest ideas none of whom we could work into our schedule this time around so the next one will be longer and there will be someone else (schedules willing) that we can gab with.

We would have gone on longer if SOMEONE would have been able to do a daytime interview but SOMEONE was too busy working at a job or something.
hint: SOMEONE has lots and lots of favorites.

Jessamyn, what "fish buffalo fish"? ... I've failed to turn this up, but I'd love to know what you'd said (and, of course, what it meant).

Yep. When I was doing linguistics stuff in college we'd always make longass sentences using buffalo and fish. Fish fish buffalo fissh. Buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo fish. etc. Sort of like that post Rhomboid linked to.

I don't think we're all introverts, I just don't think us extroverts need to ask those kinds of questions. But then I'm an extreme extrovert and get really angry and sad if I'm by myself too much. And naturally think the world revolved around / is the same as I am :D

I turned off all the other bandwidth-sucking things in the house but that seems to happen when I'm scrolling and/or loading other pages. I think next time I'll try it from someplace with more bandwidth.

if it's scrolling or page loading in firefox, it's likely a processor issue. I know my macbook can randomly beachball for a few seconds while scrolling complex pages.

I like how you guys look stuff up and comment on what you see while chatting, it makes it more immediate somehow. So I'd rather keep that in and have Jessamyn's voice be less than perfect if it ever comes to a trade off. I listen to a few commercial podcasts (i.e. made by a company) with worse sound quality, you guys are doing pretty well.

If it's any consolation, this podcast is 325% better for not being ruined by an interview with me, as I had planned to use my time to just air a list of grievances against individual members, sorted in alphabetical order, cross-indexed by member number & street address.

If you want to do an interview with "anonymous," you may consider doing a "female anonymous" and a "male anonymous." I suggest this only because the questions do indeed differ by gender from what I've noticed. (It's tempting to do a sociology MS thesis on something similar.)
Also, please make sure to get volunteers (who aren't trapped by effing dialup) but who ARE addicted to anon questions in that soap-opera-esque kind of way.

The answers they get tend to be different too, by gender.

I should think that the interview with "anonymous" would be rather one-sided:
Q: So.., what did the doctor say about that embarassing rash?
A: ::crickets::
Q: And did your dad finally get out of prison?
A: ::crickets::
Q: Um... *cough* ...have you at least DTMFA??
A: ::crickets:: ::owl hoots::
Q: (under breath) Asshole...

Is there somewhere I can download the earlier podcasts? I know they are available via the flash player thingy, but I want to download a bunch that I missed when my iPod was out of action - is there a link somewhere to the archived versions?

Thanks mathowie. This may seem like a stupid question but, if I download the .mp3 files manually, is there any way to add them to the "podcasts" part of iTunes (Windows)? It is trivial to add them to the music library, but I hate that they aren't in with the podcasts where they belong.

For posterity, by the way (I finally got around to listening to this), the 'saying yes to everything' is something that I've always believed, and learned it in part from my buddy Rick, the guy who got blown up at the Sari nightclub in Bali. I talk about it in my eulogy/memorial thing to him here.
posted by stavrosthewonderchicken at 2:34 AM on June 19, 2007 [2 favorites]
If Rick hated anything, and he was foremost a man who loved, not hated, but if he hated anything, it was lies, dissembling, falseness, pretension. He refused to be a part of anything that was false, that was anti-life, anti-love, but he was loathe to talk about it in terms like that, not wanting to trivialize it, to make it sound trite, as I've done by talking about it here. Instead, he'd talk about how important it was to say "yes" - yes to life, yes to life in its infinite extravagant abundance, yes to everything, yes whether it brought you pleasure or pain. When I came back one year from 9 months in Greece, and explained that I loved it there because I found it filled with people who smacked themselves lustily on the chest and declared "Christo like!", he knew exactly what I was talking about. It became shorthand for us for this idea. He accepted with equanimity whatever life might bring him. He lived a life that both in its broad sweep and its details embodied the things he believed.I try like hell to live that way, too, with varying degrees of success.

How wants to join the Metafilter Anonymous Choir. We print out a list of anonymous questions and then head to public places and read them allowed. At the end... jazz hands.

That's an excellent way to live, stavros and, while it may bring some bruises and scars, is the only way to get the most out of life. I try to say at least maybe to every opportunity that comes along with, as you have found, varying amounts of success.

Could the RSS feed for the podcast be more prominently displayed on the podcast page? You know, with one of those ubiquitous orange icons?
Or, perhaps the <link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS"> URL embedded in the page could point here (which has the MP3 enclosure tags) instead of here (which is actually the MeTa feed)?
I'm embarrassed to say I only sporadically caught these podcasts before realizing there was a feed at all. (Grumbling at one point that it's not really a podcast without one.) And I love podcasts!
