MeFi Tokyo meetup May 7, 2007 4:09 AM Subscribe
This is a post for discussion on a yet-to-be-scheduled MeFi Tokyo meetup.
I think this is self-explanatory, but in any case, if you'd like to attend, please leave a comment with some preferred dates/times/locations, etc. We won't be able to accommodate everyone's first choices but we'll do our best.

I'd be available in June (nights) on:
Fri/Sat 1 or 2
Fri/Sat 8 or 9
Fri 15
I'm in Tokyo, on the Yamanote line, and I'd suggest somewhere close to a Yamanote station: anywhere, really.

(Unless, as Google Maps shows, you don't actually live in that house, but in the driveway that the arrow is pointing to, in which case I'm not actually jealous)

amberglow: You didn't notice at the meetup last year that none of us Tokyo Mefites have their pinky fingers intact?
Minor reference note: people in the west seem to be under the impression that the missing pinky finger is a sign of the yakuza. This is true. They also seem to be under the impression that this is because the pinky finger is cut off as some part of a ceremony showing fealty. This is only partially true. The pinky finger is cut off as a sign of atonement when you fuck up. It's like saying "I'm sorry" to the millionth degree. So us pinky-less Tokyo Mefites suck.

Well, I think gen has a point: while it'd be nice to include the esteemed adamgreenfield, we should ultimately make it a date that could accommodate the greatest number of Tokyo (and surrounding area) people. At this point, then, can we try to narrow it down to:

None here. That's the best date for me.
If not: location?
One suggestion I'd throw out there would be Super-Deluxe, located next door to Roppongi Hills. For those that don't know it, don't let the Roppongi location throw you: it's not one of those sleazy joints that Roppongi is infamous for. But it's very spacious, so folks could move around and mingle in a way that the usual izakaya-style seating doesn't exactly allow. There's good micro-brews on tap (plus other booze, though not too great on the wine tip) and food is pretty good, too: a mixed menu of keema-curry or fish and chips type offerings. Still, it's not primarily a restaurant, so those extremely picky about food (I can be like that sometimes meself) might wanna suggest somewhere else. But I like the vibe there. Relaxed, multinational... Of course, any and all suggestions for other spots are welcome!

Super-Deluxe looks awesome. I might try a sneak peek later this month if that's the joint.

Yeah, it's a great place. I do gigs there from time to time: the new PA is really good, the manager and staff are wonderful, it's a fine establishment, all in all. HOWEVER... one thing did occur to me (it should've occurred to me sooner, in fact), and that is the possibility that someone might get booked to play there that night. Last minute bookings are not all that uncommon at SDLX, so it might not be the best place to plan on doing this meetup after all. If someone gets booked to play, there'll probably be a cover charge, and of course with live music going on the whole meetup vibe is out the window. So... any other suggestions from anyone?

Um, OK. But I assure you it exists! And I stand by my reccommendation of it, though also of my reservations about planning it there for the aforementioned reason that there may be live music happening. Why do you make this point, though?Surely there must be thousands of other Tokyo spots that you and gen are unfamiliar with, no? Will the place we choose need to be somewhere that either you and/or gen are already familiar with? Are you familiar with ejoey's suggested venue? Or, do you have any other suggestions?

Super-Deluxe sounds good! Very chill place, and for those of you who don't know: it's within spitting distance of Mori Tower. Know that yuppie watering hole Heartland at the base of the Mori Tower? From there, go west over the short crosswalk towards Shibuya and Super-Deluxe is on the left about 100 feet away. Just look for the simple, old-skool looking sign and head downstairs.
But I'm assuming too much...can we agree on this place? If we meet in early evening, I don't think we'll have a problem with crowds.

zardoz, I'd only say again what I did before: there is a very real possibility that between now and the 15th (I think we're going with that date, yes? no?) there may be a live music booking there. It is a weekend night, after all. However, it is a great room (glad you know about the place!) and it'd be a really comfortable, spacious place to do this in... SO, shall I give the manager (I know him) a call and ask about his projections for that date? As of now, there's nothing on the calendar, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have, say, 2 or more things pencilled in for that date and is just waiting on confirmations. That's the way things often go at Super Deluxe. Can a few more folks chime in here, as soon as possible, and maybe firm up the date and all? Yoroshiku onegaishimasu!

Friday the 15th is great for me, as is the Roppongi location of Super-Deluxe. Yuppie-tolerant folks can do a quick warm up at Heartland, depending on what time we're meeting up. (I like that Heartland (Kirin) beer...)

Spanish place is really close, about 2 minutes from the station. Super-Deluxe is good too. I poked my head in there on an open lounge night this week and it was empty.
Sorry to add options, but we could also go ghetto and go to one of those college kid izakayas in Shibuya with 1000 yen all you can drink :)

Since gen is the one who started this thread, I guess it's his call, but just to put it out there, I vote we just say June 15th at Roppongi Super-Deluxe and sidebar this meetup. We go ahead with SD if there are no live music bookings that night/if flapjax can somehow talk the manager out of booking one that night, perhaps until a certain time. If not, we go with ejoey's suggestion, Las Meninas in Koenji. Say around 7 or thereabouts?

If a few more folks fall in line with misozaki's vote, I'll give SuperDeluxe a buzz and sound 'em out on that night. And if it's no go, I agree that ejoey's Koenji spot should be the next consideration. So all you fence-sitters, or folks for whom this is potentially unworkable for whatever reason, and anyone else applicable, please make yourself heard! Speak! Gen, where are you? Calling bugbread! Hellooooooooo?

Super-Deluxe=good. If not that, then the Koenji place is alright. If not that, then we can take over some izakaya in Shibuya.

Sorry, was a bit busy there. Super-deluxe sounds fine. Koenji would take twice as long to get to, but it's still doable. Shibuya is easiest. But, in the end, all three are doable, so gen, make the final decision.

Great- so it's June 15th, superdeluxe, Roppongi. I'll try to contact them to make sure that there are no conflicts. If you dont hear from me otherwise, let's plan to meet there at 7ish. I think we'd want to go for food later so if folks have ideas for a reasonable place that might hold a bunch of drunkards happy diners, feel free to let us know here.

Hmm... a fly in the ointment. Superdeluxe's schedule has a concert on the 15th starting at 7pm, at 4500 yen. I'll assume that most of us don't want to do that.
Let's fall back to ejoey's suggestion in Koenji as the next option. ejoey- can you call your place and see if they can reserve about 15 or so on Friday?

Ironically, I just discovered I need to be in Tokyo on the 3rd and 4th of June...which pretty much uses up the annual "big city allotment" for this country mouse.
Maybe next year? A MeFiGifu Meetup seems highly unlikely....

I'm in too. That is as long as I don't wind up having to play a show that Friday. If whoever is making the reservation at Las Meninas could tell John that vegetarians will be coming it would be much appreciated. John's cooking is great but it's pretty meat-heavy.

Hey, mexican, glad to hear you're gonna try and make it!
But you've set a dangerous precedent here my friend, with your shameless self-promotion. Now I too am forced to advertise my upcoming shows. I'll be even more shameless and inform all interested parties of two gigs I'm doing!
Tomorrow, Tuesday May 15: I'll be doing some of my songs (2 sets, I believe) with accompaniment by guitarist Kido Natsuki and violinist Katsui Yuji. (Some may know Yuji-san from ROVO fame). It's at a place in Shibuya called Classics. Here's a map and here's their schedule.
Thursday, May 17: I'll be doing a set with my duo project SKIST, featuring vocalist and electronicist Ito Haruna. It's at a place in Sendagaya called LoopLine. Here's a map and here's more info. And here's a SKIST song I posted to MeFi Music this past January.

Spanish Reservation is all set. June 15th, 7pm, vegetarian stuff will be served, 15+ people ok!
To get there, go out JR Koenji north exit, go left then walk straight past the McDonalds on your left down the shopping street with lots of adult establishments. Make your first right at the bakery, and a few buildings down on the right you will see a sign for Las Meninas. Go up to the second floor and it's all the way in the back.

I'm open to suggestions on dates and times. I imagine that central Tokyo on a Friday night might be best for Tokyo folks or Saturday for non-Tokyo folks (would anyone come into Tokyo just for a MeFi meetup?)
I'd like to shoot for something at least 2 weeks out or farther so those of us who need to plan in advance can do so.
