Where is that post about the fake Aussie pop star?

I'll looking for a post from maybe a year or so back. It was about an Australian pop star who's father basically paid for his sons' stardom. It culminated is a concert where the son was booed off the stage and exposed as a fake. Does anyone remember this post?

I also remember it and also can't find it. I was thinking that they did advance promotion for his album and tour using the line "Nick is Coming!". But a metafilter search for that phrase indicates that I'm senile.

The singer may not have been Australian (a little hazy on that part). I do remember that he had a rich father who generated a ton of hype for his budding son's career and it culminated in a large show. I could be wrong on the booing part but I remember the article referring to concert-goers being pretty underwhelmed.

Reminds me of a side note about the movie Eegah, starring Arch Hall, Jr. (In the MST3K episode ripping on the movie, Servo refers to the star as looking like Cabbage Patch Elvis.) Written and directed by Arch Hall SENIOR, the movie was meant to catapult the squishy-faced teen into national musical stardom. It didn't, but Arch Hall Jr. and the Archers did play some gigs. No booing off the stage that I am aware of.

AFAIK, Ashley Simpson's career wasn't actually bankrolled by the Simpson family. They just shoved her into it.

Thanks for reminding me of this absurd tale. I used to play with the drummer mentioned in the article, Mr Louis Burdett, who, although only referenced as some guy in a pub band here, is a huge figure in Australian improvised music circles and a heck of a player.

Hm. There's a Marcus Lagudi listed as a coach of an U11 rugby team - the Easts Wallaroos (not to be confused with the Australian Wimmyns rugby team, the Wallaroos).

Considering that their home ground is in Woollahra, not far from the rugby-playing Waverley College, I'd guess that's our man. What's the bet that he finally came 12 years ago & is coaching his son to stardom on the rugby field?

Not to mention every other half-way successful contestant on any music-related "reality" show in the world. Sadly, the bar for getting a record deal seems to be somewhat lower than back in the "good old days" when a blow job to a record company exec only got someone to listen to 30 seconds of your demo with half an ear while they were on hold with someone.

The latest and coincidentally (?) named such star here in the states is Hannah Montana, daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus and latest Disney Channel-dominating singing/dancing/acting manufactured star-tween of the Duff/Lohan mold.
