Keeping up the monthly tradition. My diary says Friday 16th or Saturday 24th. How about yours?

Venue suggestions welcome. (Beer is food.)

Hurray, a meetup I am actually free for! I can do either at the moment.
posted by greycap at 6:34 AM on March 7, 2007

What a fantastic idea, I just happen to be free those dates.
posted by econous at 7:20 AM on March 7, 2007

I have been to 2 of the earliest meetups in the UK, but have been stymied ever since as I have had work commitments. However...

I am free on the 16th. So that's one old timers vote for St. Patrick's Day Eve.

Green Guinness all round!

O and lets not forget to use the sidebar when we get this all 'firmed up'.

Oo-er missus!

Location, location, location. Well, we've been we've been:
  • geekily typical in Fitzrovia
  • modish in Brick Lane
  • professional in Fleet Street

What next for our rag-tag gang?

Bevvied in Brixton, or bladdered in Bloomsbury? If not, then how about getting rat-arsed in Penge?

I can't help thinking that I'm meant to be doing something on the 24th. Another family birthday, I think. I know I'm meant to be doing this the day after, though. But, according to iCal, I'm free on the 16th.

I know I'm meant to be doing this the day after, though.

Apparently not: Date - Sunday 11th March 2007. 10.30a.m. Start.

Oh well, I wasn't ready for it, anyway.
posted by TheDonF at 1:49 PM on March 7, 2007

D'oh! Looks like the 16th is the winner at this stage.
posted by chrismear at 2:19 PM on March 7, 2007

I was going to suggest Brighton as London is too far north but I may be passing thru on 16th so who knows?

Someone pick a venue that makes it easy for me to get to Liverpool St or Tottenham Hale :-)
posted by i_cola at 2:42 PM on March 7, 2007

I'm a maybe for the 16th. I might be in sunny Southport visiting family.

I wish I had something witty to say here.

I am now envisioning all of my favorite Londoners dressed as the March Hare and congregating somewhere to drink and smoke tea.
posted by Eideteker at 5:13 PM on March 7, 2007

Eideteker, that's an excellent idea! Maybe I'll come to the meetup dressed as the March Hare.
posted by atrazine at 5:24 PM on March 7, 2007

actually, never mind. The meetup is of course, after dark.
posted by atrazine at 5:40 PM on March 7, 2007

can I come along? I'll be in London from April 2 to 6th *peers in hopefully from SFO*

    Walthamstow it is then!

Sadly, for me at least, it looks as though I'm busy on both of those dates. Can I put in an early request for the next LMU to take place on a Monday or Tuesday though? I'd love to be at one from the start, rather than be forced to use my mad ninja skillz to blend in with the group later on.
posted by MrMustard at 11:35 PM on March 7, 2007

Gah, looks like I'm just going to miss this one - I'm back from Kenya (for good) on the 18th. I'll try and make the next one though...

Also, whatever happened to Northern meet ups? Have there been any for non-Southerners in the last year or so? If not, surely its time to put that right!
posted by davehat at 12:59 AM on March 8, 2007

I might be feeling a bit... sensitive, as I have a Mastodon gig to go to on the 15th.

    srboisvert: bored in Birmingham?
Not possible, surely. It's the greatest city on earth.

But how about: 'Shlapped around in Sheffield'?
    Too soon?
posted by MrMustard at 1:52 AM on March 8, 2007

    yes

I think I'm free both days.

See the problem with this fancy "meetups in the sidebar, don't post extra threads" thing is that shit moves so fast on MetaTalk that meetup threads frequently fall off the front page before everything is erect firmed up.

    16th, please!

I'm moving house to Chiswick on the 24th
posted by armoured-ant at 6:36 AM on March 10, 2007

    I think we've settled on the 16th.

And we're all meeting here, right?

    Ho ho ho.
posted by chrismear at 7:36 AM on March 10, 2007

But seriously, if no one suggests anything better, I'm declaring this a big Soho piss-up by fiat.
posted by chrismear at 7:58 AM on March 10, 2007

Armoured-ant, then we should have a Chiswick meetup soonish. (As I live here and am fundamentally lazy. And want to go to a meetup before moving to Madrid in May.)
posted by slimepuppy at 9:11 AM on March 10, 2007

I'm in for the 16th. Southport will wait.

Mint. As it's been awfully nice weatherwise recently, how about somewhere on the river?
posted by armoured-ant at 1:34 AM on March 11, 2007

Sounds like famous last words to me, armoured-ant.
posted by Lotto at 8:11 AM on March 11, 2007

Somewhere on the river sounds great to me. If the weather is awful, it will be a memorable meetup.
posted by sueinnyc at 8:36 AM on March 11, 2007

The Captain Kidd is a great Sam Smiths on the riverside.

Alternatively there's The Banker slightly to the west, but it does tend to be rather crowded on a Friday night.
posted by hugsnkisses at 12:05 PM on March 11, 2007

Heh, I'd shortlisted the Captain Kidd too. Sounds like a plan.

Also, it'll be nice to see Wapping again. I have fond memories of the area from when I helped out with a short-lived family business venture selling small wooden men at Tobacco Dock, back when it was shopping centre in the early 90s. I think we grossly overestimated the market for small wooden men.
posted by chrismear at 1:36 PM on March 11, 2007

Hang on, have we just arranged to meet at a riverside pub for the good weather, after sunset?

    We're idiots.
posted by armoured-ant at 3:18 AM on March 12, 2007

right, whether you lot like it or not, i'm moving to london.
posted by infini at 4:09 AM on March 12, 2007

Sorry this one didn't coincide with your trip, infini, but I wouldn't be surprised if a few MeFites would show up for a welcome-infini-to-London pint or two when you're over. Most of us (me) are up for any excuse for a drink.

Anyway, if there are no objections, I will give the Kidd a buzz this afternoon and see if we can't have a table set aside for us on Friday. 6.30 start?
posted by chrismear at 5:46 AM on March 13, 2007

I'll be coming back from Bedfordshire that evening but should be there relatively early-ish, I hope. At least having a meeting outside London prevents me from getting stuck in the office like last time.
posted by greycap at 2:46 PM on March 13, 2007

I'm working in Shoreditch at the mo, so I'll be there right on time.

hi chrismear, that sounds nice, thank you. i've got 4-6th april open in london and can share my tall tales of my last visit when I stayed at the generator dorm hotel in Tavistock Place. this is a special trip back for me to your fine city.
posted by infini at 7:19 AM on March 14, 2007

Well, the nice man at the Captain Kidd wouldn't reserve a table for me. But I am confident we shall prevail regardless! Turn up and shove, folks.

AyUp I'm just finishing a week of holiday at the moment and as this Captain Kidd Pub is a ten minute or so walk from my flat I might just drop by as I commence the evenings session, but how proper a place is it?

I ain't a looker even in the best of times and the fact I've been on holiday for a week means my cheeks haven't felt the loving caress of a razor for, uhmm, one week.

So what I'm trying to say is I definitely look a little rough and the fact that I've been heavily carousing for a week sorta adds to the oeuvre that is this part of my life and just wanted to know how likely was it this place might have a dress code that I'd be violating. On accounta I can deal with getting thrown out, but not being let in would suck large.

'cause I ain't shaving and putting on a suit to hang wif you folks. Nothing personal. Its just that suits are for, well, work.
posted by Mutant at 6:07 AM on March 16, 2007

Well, I haven't been to this place before, but, y'know, it's just a pub that serves cheap lager. I think you'll be fine.

Oh and for the purposes of avoiding "searching for the internet strangers" embarrassment, here's my phone number in case anyone gets lost.

I shan't be attending tonight, I'm afraid. Two in a row. Am I still in the cabal?

I'm afraid that I too am missing the meetup. I was out of town for the day and now that I'm back and ready to go, it seems a bit late. See you all next time, I hope!
