Maybe it will do better than the orkut group. March 5, 2007 11:31 PM Subscribe
I went and created a Metafilter social group on Ning.
I imagine it as a convenient place to put photos and videos (and maybe tools, like greasemonkey scripts etc.) all in one more or less neat little pile. If that doesn't catch on, at least it won't be used for anything evil.
Erm, except klangklangston, as far as I can tell, "Ning" is pretty much Google Groups or Yahoo Groups with a "social networking" catchphrase on the front page.
Seriously...Members? Forum? Post Photos? Haven't we dont this before?

I posted about Ning 18 months ago. Guess they're out of beta or something.

Wasn't there also a flickr group, as well?
Seriously, do I really need an join an online group to manage my online group? Please tell me it hasn't come to that.

With regard to social networking software, I am now resolutely a late-adopter. I got on Friendster early, and Orkut. I have a MySpace page (because bands are retards and have abandoned making real webpages), and a Facebook page. I was on egroups before it became Yahoo groups.
Fuck all of them.
You know how I connect with the Metafilter community? Through motherfucking Metafilter.com.

Yes, that's right, if you don't join the ning group immediately, then your metafilter experience going forward is spiritually bankrupt. I'm glad nobody is making this out to be more than it is.

God I miss egroups. It was sad what Yahoo did to it.

Some day a messiah will come and tell us what the Metafilter Experience really means.

And I say, "Hey, Metafilter, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And Metafilter says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

We 14k'ers got total consciousness upon joining, along with the hookers and blow. (You did get the hookers and blow, didn't you?)

The hookers and the blow were all gone by the time us 17k'ers signed up.

Orkut did pretty well, it's just that it became completely dominated by Portuguese speakers for some reason.
