Projects is for projects. Matt explicitly said when it launced he didn't really want to see it used to promote pre-existing ongoing sites/weblogs. This fills the gap nicely, I'd say.

Hey. I'm hoping I can keep this up. It would be great if someone could point me to that huge list jessamyn talks of, it would be a good thing to have in my hip pocket.

In case anyone wonders, the rule I set for myself is that the user site has to be listed at the "website" link on a person's user page. That puts up some kind of arbitrary limit. It also absolves me from reviewing every site in the wonderchicken or cortex megamultinationalwebpresences^TM.

Funny. That's exactly how I felt after thumbing through DFW's foray into mathematics writing. He wrote a book wherein he attempts to explain Cantor and Infinity to the layman.

What a mess. It's almost purposely incomprehensible. Taking a subject which could use some friendly exposition but instead throwing in irrelevant equations and associated mathematical subjects (as if to say "Hey! look what I know! I must be pretty smart!") to the detriment of the reader.

It's mere self-indulgence on DFW's part. The layman is left thinking that this subject will always be beyond him. The expert would never bother to pick up this book at all.

Did I tell all of you guys how I took a writing class with DFW when I was in college? He was a good teacher, if a little too aware of how good a wordsmith he was. I think I got an A in the class. Years later when I saw him give a reading for Infinite Jest at Eliot Bay Books in Seattle, I had brought my copy of the Pushcart Prize book that had the excellent story of the guy who is preparing for a Total Weed Orgy. I handed it to him and said "Can you sign it 'to Jessamyn, my favorite student'?" and he looked up and peered at me and said "Jessamyn West? From Hampshire? I always wondered what happened to you." He signed the book "To my favorite student of all time." and I have always had a soft spot for him ever since even though I find some of his writing totally unreadable. Now you know.

I hated Infinite Jest. However, I love Jess's story about him as a teacher (teeniest bit self-absorbed, DFW?), however, which redeems him somewhat in my eyes (or what languagehat said!).

DFW taught at Hampshire? How come I never knew this? Now I do know. I maintain that Infinite Jest is terrible, and have developed an elaborate pop-psychological* hypothesis as to why some love it so. That said, Jessanyn's story plus my irrational fondness of all things Hampshire has made me like him a lot more. Now if only he'd write something I like to read.


*remember, pop-psychological is a synonym for bullshittical

Can you go into bullshittical detail? I enjoyed reading the book very much (even more than I hated the lack of a goddam ending), but am open to attacks on the book presented independent of the context of (however justifiable or ingrained) DFW-hate.

I don't think he taught at Hampshire. I could be wrong, but I believe it was somewhere else in the Valley. Amherst? UMASS?

I'm another Hampshire-ite who has NEVAR heard of DFW teaching at dear ol' Camp Hamp.

I didn't dislike "Consider the Lobster," but my loathing for Infinite Jest it is great.
