Sweet. An excellent idea. I was always daunted by the Huge List o' Sites (which I don't think is available anymore).

How is this practically different then projects?
posted by delmoi at 10:09 PM on February 22, 2007

Well, first off not everyone would consider their personal websites as a project, delmoi. Plus Omiewise gets to be Sole Dictator of Selection and Judgment.

Sole Dictator of Selection and Judgment

Hitherto referred to as SDSJ?

And yes, it's definitely a cool idea, a round of applause for OmieWise!

this is very cool, and much better than the unwieldy giant list.

Oh man, I forgot to capitalize the W. Now I'm boned.

How is this practically different then projects?

Projects is for projects. Matt explicitly said when it launced he didn't really want to see it used to promote pre-existing ongoing sites/weblogs. This fills the gap nicely, I'd say.

*ooo* thank you! I've already "creepylikestalking" been to languagehat's blog and exchanged recipes with me *titters irritatingly*

Here's a great user site I just learned about.

This is pretty great.

Also, my inner narcissist is going to have to keep checking this compulsively until he mentions me.

Damn.

the Huge List o' Sites

I was wondering if that still exists anymore.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 5:09 AM on February 23, 2007

Hey. I'm hoping I can keep this up. It would be great if someone could point me to that huge list jessamyn talks of, it would be a good thing to have in my hip pocket.

In case anyone wonders, the rule I set for myself is that the user site has to be listed at the "website" link on a person's user page. That puts up some kind of arbitrary limit. It also absolves me from reviewing every site in the wonderchicken or cortex megamultinationalwebpresencesTM.

Huge List o' Sites

Yeah, no shit Stavros. I picked through that thing for a good two hours once. There is some awesome stuff out there though.

I'd swear I saw it a month ago but Matt set it up so that you could refresh and get a short list of random sites rather than loading that server-crippling two hundred pager.

The following are 100 random URLs from the userbase here at MetaFilter. Reload to get 100 more.

What's your beef with Dallas-Fort Worth? I'd seriously reconsider messing with Texas like that.

What a cool idea, OmieWise - I'll be a regular reader! And thanks very much for including Blort!

from LH's blog entry on DFW: ...He has no right to parade erudition he has no claim to, still less to condescend to people who know far more than he...

Funny. That's exactly how I felt after thumbing through DFW's foray into mathematics writing. He wrote a book wherein he attempts to explain Cantor and Infinity to the layman.

What a mess. It's almost purposely incomprehensible. Taking a subject which could use some friendly exposition but instead throwing in irrelevant equations and associated mathematical subjects (as if to say "Hey! look what I know! I must be pretty smart!") to the detriment of the reader.

It's mere self-indulgence on DFW's part. The layman is left thinking that this subject will always be beyond him. The expert would never bother to pick up this book at all.

Did I tell all of you guys how I took a writing class with DFW when I was in college? He was a good teacher, if a little too aware of how good a wordsmith he was. I think I got an A in the class. Years later when I saw him give a reading for Infinite Jest at Eliot Bay Books in Seattle, I had brought my copy of the Pushcart Prize book that had the excellent story of the guy who is preparing for a Total Weed Orgy. I handed it to him and said "Can you sign it 'to Jessamyn, my favorite student'?" and he looked up and peered at me and said "Jessamyn West? From Hampshire? I always wondered what happened to you." He signed the book "To my favorite student of all time." and I have always had a soft spot for him ever since even though I find some of his writing totally unreadable. Now you know.

posted by languagehat at 11:01 AM on February 23, 2007

I hated Infinite Jest. However, I love Jess's story about him as a teacher (teeniest bit self-absorbed, DFW?), however, which redeems him somewhat in my eyes (or what languagehat said!).
posted by Lynsey at 11:37 AM on February 23, 2007

DFW taught at Hampshire? How come I never knew this? Now I do know. I maintain that Infinite Jest is terrible, and have developed an elaborate pop-psychological* hypothesis as to why some love it so. That said, Jessanyn's story plus my irrational fondness of all things Hampshire has made me like him a lot more. Now if only he'd write something I like to read.

*remember, pop-psychological is a synonym for bullshittical
posted by Kattullus at 12:08 PM on February 23, 2007

Can you go into bullshittical detail? I enjoyed reading the book very much (even more than I hated the lack of a goddam ending), but am open to attacks on the book presented independent of the context of (however justifiable or ingrained) DFW-hate.
posted by cortex at 12:16 PM on February 23, 2007

I don't think he taught at Hampshire. I could be wrong, but I believe it was somewhere else in the Valley. Amherst? UMASS?

This is neat. But you have to do a post:

omiewise - MeFi user sites

because that would be all self-referential and totally Hofstadter.

I'm another Hampshire-ite who has NEVAR heard of DFW teaching at dear ol' Camp Hamp.

I didn't dislike "Consider the Lobster," but my loathing for Infinite Jest it is great.
