Where is the Vassilis Fotopoulos post? There are currently four obits on front page; maybe we could just have a permanent link to the wikipedia page instead?
posted by meech to Etiquette/Policy at 7:48 PM (77 comments total)

And now there are two posts on Metatalk about those four posts on Metafilter. If the mathematical series continues, I'll be interested to see what fractional posts look like (and where they will appear).

I'm starting to seriously question Obit threads in general, unless they can meet the criteria of standard FPPs
posted by edgeways at 7:52 PM on January 14, 2007

Just to be clear - I'm having a whinge about the four different obits.
posted by meech at 7:52 PM on January 14, 2007

Huh, I only know who one person is on that list. Also, I too am questioning the obit threads. They're usually pretty lazy. Hell, one of them was made before the news was even on the internet. It was just like "here's some stuff they did, trust me their dead".

A little part of me dies every time you go away. Can I make an FPP?

And now there are two posts on Metatalk about those four posts on Metafilter. If the mathematical series continues, I'll be interested to see what fractional posts look like (and where they will appear).

Jimmy, Johnny and Jane each make a MetaFilter post. Jane's post is the same as Johnny's except hers is better and has more links and the original source, while Johnny's was first but consists of one link to one of those skeezy linkjackers. Jimmy's post is fifteen YouTube links to monkeys flinging poo and masturbating, which accumulates 67 favorites in less than 3 hours. Jane's user number is lower than Jimmy and Johnny's, but Johnny has an A-list blog. Jack posts a direct link to an enormous archive of punk bootlegs and entire albums in MP3 form - many of dubious copyright clearance. Jared and Janet both post the same obituary page of a mildly beloved but decidedly C-list TV actor. Janet is first but hypersensitive and clinically paranoid, Jared is currently experimenting upon himself with "research chemicals". Johnny flames out in Jared's thread, who flags Johnny's more crappy post in favor of Jane. Joe posts a fascinating expose on Victorian fetishism (with pictures!) but fails to indicate that is "NSFW", because frankly it's all pretty tame, historical shit. Jane and Joe argue about community ethics, etiquette and labeling in Joe's thread, which spills over for some insane reason into Janet's thread, as well as Jared's. Jack's thread is all about jonmc and The Ramones.

Given that it is a full moon and a three day weekend traditionally known for copious amounts of alcohol consumption - how many MetaTalk threads will be generated in 24 hours, and how many comments for each? (Mean average is fine, bonus points for min-max.) Please show your work.

The front page will be busy the day the apocalypse comes.
posted by Eideteker at 9:53 PM on January 14, 2007

I call for the banning of meech.

Or more to the point, you've been here long enough to know that obituaries are like IP posts; stop looking at them and they'll eventually go away. Since you choose to ignore that rule and instead highlight their existence, the easiest solution, to me, seems to be to get rid of you. :-)
posted by SeizeTheDay at 9:53 PM on January 14, 2007

Maybe we could have a separate page called DeathFilter, with a black background.

P.S. Now there's a FIFTH obit post on the front page.

Oops, I just remembered the Music page already has a black background... So, how about a Deathfilter page with solemn auto-play organ music and a flickering-candle background?

Didn't Lincoln have a massage-therapist named Kennedy, and Kennedy have a massage-therapist named Lincoln?
In that same vein, it seems that King had a secretary named McDonald, and McDonald's CHIEF RIVAL is Burger King.
Coinkydance?
And King had a secretary, and Secretariat was King Of The Racehorses.
Majestic Plan?

Please advise.

posted by The Deej at 12:22 AM on January 15, 2007

If the dead do not hear The Deej, are they still dead? If they are not still dead, does this mean there will be more threads about resurrection on the blue? If there are more threads about resurrection on the blue, does this necessitate more obituary threads on the blue? I'm not sure where The Deej's lament will lead us, and I'm afraid of the potential results.

I fear for us all.

I agree completely. These "who the fuck was that" deathfilter posts are a waste of space. A obit should not be a get-out-of-having-your-shitty-post-deleted-for-free card.
posted by Rhomboid at 5:39 AM on January 15, 2007

Go find something creative out on the 'net and post it to the front page. Obits about unknown people don't belong. When we had an obit every other week or less and it was for someone significant, then it was fine. Worse, most of these obit posts are one link to the mere fact of the death. meh.
