This was an example of something that's become more common lately, a post whose unwritten subtitle is "My google-fu is strong."
This post is another example of that. Google for "Saddam" and dump all the half-way reasonable links that turn up into a single MeFi post.
Yeah, there's a theme, and yeah, there are links. But that doesn't necessarily make for a good post.
Or "My You-Tube-fu is strong"; use the You-Tube search engine and dump all the videos that result.
(By the way, this YouTube genuinely is good.)

On the subject of depressing and weird - I find it little bit weird when someone posts a "." in an obit thread and then proceeds to wax philosophical about that particular person's passing (I've probably even done this myself without thinking about it). I suppose things come to mean different things over time and it's no longer "I'm at a loss for words" but now a signifier of something completely different, but what is that different thing? Does "." now mean "Death is a real bummer"?

Now, now, it took over a minute to make sure that the post had the right number of dots. And the post is deleted, so it's a very small number of people who will be seeing this "depressing" post.
In all seriousness, it's simply a depressing fact. While I'm actually active in the antiwar movement and have had friends and family in Iraq -- so it's hardly the most significant thing I've done against the war -- I thought a 3000x sympathy note would be a lot more appropriate for the occasion than starting up a debate that would go nowhere.

Better living through genetic engineering! A new cash-crop hybrid has been developed which can be planted any time of the year. It can be harvested after just 2 months, vastly increasing annual yields per acre. It's resistant to herbicides and other nasty chemicals. It's referred to as "Columbian" and it's now the breed-of-choice for Michoacan marijuana farmers.

There are plenty of things posted in which I have no interest. Flash games, for instance, or any sort of computer games, for that matter. I don't care about sports. I don't demand that posts about computer games or sports be banned. I don't belittle people for their tastes in music when I do not share their tastes or make surmises about the mental states of people I do not know and have never met.
I don't make MetaTalk posts about what should or should not be posted--but I do make fun of people who do when their own latest MetaFilter post was one of the suckier posts ever made.

It's not exactly news around here that one link news stories have to really have some merit to make the bar. Posting one that isn't even news is just lazy beyond belief. Looking stuff up at least takes an iota or two of effort and forethought. People who can't even make the most minimal effort have little room to talk about people who do.

y2karl, I don't hate on crap posts because of their subjects, but because of their construction. You know that. You are not a moron. Your later YouTube posts sucked ass because you just dumped link after link from generic searches on YouTube, and then you did it again and again. SCDB's frankenpot post sucked because it was a link to a shitty Fox News story, with no framing of substance. Stavros' recent post sucked because it was a poor copy-paste of a 3rd generation regex of a robot-crawled YouTube search, where most of the links were misleading.
I don't have a vendetta against videos that happen to be hosted by YouTube, or any specific subject for a post. I do tend to hate posts that are deliberately constructed — that are not found links. Also, links to poor tabloid journalism with no framing (FoxNews, The Register, any other British newspaper). Poorly made posts suck independently of their subject.

Man, I just fucking like cake. Cake fucking kicks some serious motherfuckin' ass. I would marry me some fucking cake if there was ever some cake that would ever fucking marry my fucking cake-loving ass.
You motherfuckers and your anti-cake loving asses. Cake is the shit. Cake.

Everybody inevitably makes posts that suck if they just post enough. Luck of the draw. If I posted more I'd be sure to have some really bad posts. Nothing personal – I actually like you – when there was agitation for a third, non-north-american moderator, I nominated you repeatedly. It's all going to be okay. (^_^)

So then I got this idea about driving a cheesecake truck, posted by loquacious at 11:00 PM on December 31, 2006
cuz I figured at the end of the day,
I could take some of the leftover cheesecakes home.
And I love cheesecake.
So I went to the cheesecake company
and they asked me if I could drive a truck and I said yes,
and they said 'You're hired!'
So the next day I got in the truck with all the cheesecakes
and I drove about a block and I just had to have a cheesecake
so I pulled over and opened the truck
and I got a cheesecake, and I also took one for later,
and I took one for my friend Farmboy,
and I took one to bring home,
and by that time I had eaten one of the cheesecakes
so I took another one.
Then I figured I might as well stop at my house
to drop off all the cheesecakes,
so I take five cakes to eat on the way,
and I drive another block and a half to my house.
Now it's lunch time so I eat ten cheesecakes,
and a cheesecake for dessert.
I should point out, by the way,
that all of these cheesecakes were very delicious.
Anyway, I decided that the only thing to do
would be to eat all the rest of the cheesecakes
and hide the truck somewhere
and leave town.
And I miss everybody a lot
but I'm not really sorry
because they were very delicious cheesecakes.

Well, this will end well.

I mean, I'm not a fan of calling out bad posts either...
People who have actually put some effort into what they have posted rarely are. This is my experience.
And digging up a deleted post by someone...
Picking low hanging fruit from a lawn chair while napping is more like it. Less than two weeks old is not ancient history. I use the lofi as my start page--all it took was scrolling down.

How do you get lofi to display more than a week at a time, y2karl? I'm stuck with seven days.

My lofi goes to Dec. 1. I don't why mine does and yours doesn't. Man, there were a lot of nice posts I saw scrolling. Jonson consistently makes great posts but madamejujujive's are the greatest in my book. Then there was the guy with the bot fly larva... Eeyew. I forgot that one. Insect sex and violence is OK, but, man, I don't want to be exposed to botfly larvae. TweetleBeetleBattleBookie's Gumby post was good., too.

Another random thought is that languagehat should post more. Shotaro Shimomura's portfolio was wonderful.

Huh. I wonder if there's some preference deep in the MetaFilter mysteries where I can make lofi work with a month of posts instead of a week. Unless it's grandfathered in or something. Have you had lofi as your start page for a long time, y2karl?
And I'm totally with you about languagehat, and madamjujujive's Yardbirds documentary post rules, too. Good, good stuff.

You eat it with a sandwich and some chips! It's not the Holy Grail of self abuse and flagallation! Hello Kitty says Goodbye!

My post this month was so good that it only got three comments. Beat that!
(PS: It's been a weird holiday season, what with my girlfriend back in town. I don't know if it's the lack of time that I've had to keep up with the front page and the assorted gripes, or the amazing amount of sex that I'm having— and totally bragging about— sending endorphins through me, but this all seems so hilariously petty.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to going through Stav and Y2Karl's links once my girlfriend is back in LA and I'm all bummed out, looking for entertainment to console me. I can't say the same for the myriad of news links. Say what you will about YouTube dumps, but the biggest danger there is that the videos'll be taken down, not that they won't be interesting in a week.)

indeed, there used to exist a preference for "number of days to display on the front page". since matt quite rightly recoded the front page to show a fixed number of posts with older/newer links at the bottom, the option has disappeared into spaghettiville. the users setting is still stored in the db and is still consulted by the ancient lofi code. there's just no way to change the setting any longer.
