I like the new setup. The "favorites" page titles are much clearer now. The only thing I would change (cuz you asked, right? heh) is, on the "stuff I marked as favorites" page, change the column titles from "favorite X from rkent" to "rkent's favorite X."

I wonder if it's wise to link to user's websites with only the description "website"? I'm thinking of moift's profile and how it used to be more obvious that you shouldn't EVER click on it.

Okay now, am I just the damn stupidest user to ever clutter up this filtration system, or is the ABSOLUTELY NO WAY to add another user as a contact? I'm logged in. The FAQ says 'click on the "Add user as a contact" link on their profile page.' But that option appears to be as elusive as the Loch Ness monster's secret stash of weapons of mass destruction. Is its absence as a result of this recent overhaul (which looks nice, by the way), or am I just blind?

I like the new look. This is probably really really simple and I'll feel like an idiot, but how do you add contacts now? It's been a while since I did anything at all with the contacts list but IIRC there used to be a handy button on the profiles that said, "Add this person as a contact?" and you pressed it and lo, there were all those categories to choose from. Now I can't find that and I just went carefully through fenriq's and matildaben's profiles. What am I missing? And while we're at it, how do you change the category of your contacts? If, for example, they have morphed from crush to muse or vice versa? Also it would be nice if there was a simple user search function right there on your profile so you could add a whole lot of contacts in one swell foop if you were thinking about it one evening instead of having to go and find each person's profile one by one. But that is probably a pony who deserves her own thread.

Right. Which is why user pages display the number of comments that other people have favorited -- right, jonson?
Sarcasm aside, I just figure that the number of best answers is at least as informative as the number of times someone's comments or posts have been favorited, and I personally would find it more useful. I'd see it as less of a popularity contest metric than favorites. I'm curious as to reasoning behind the "Please don't do this" responses.

One take: AskMe has a specific function in a way that other parts of the site do not. An answer should ideally be an unselfconscious attempt to add utility to a question.
So more visibly rewarding best answer counts may encourage more heavy answering by those wishing to grab at the brass ring. But folks should not be answering any more than they are capable of doing as well as they can, and so the motivation would likely dilute the overall quality of responses.
The blue and grey and etc. have a more informal, social framework for commenting activity, and so the favorite count (contentious as it may be in its own right—would anything be lost if Matt did away with the numbers, and had just links?) may not have the same deleterious effect.

God no! How about we take the favorited by others count away.
As to why. I predict that if I put "I am an electrical engineer" at the top of all my answers, my best answer count would quadruple. Assuming, for the sake of argument, that I'm right about that, what would it tell you about the information content of a "best answers" count?

I dig the new layout, it makes much better use of the available space. One thing worth noting, though. The little "what does your username mean" blurb is gone, rendering a large number of profiles senseless, or at least very silly-sounding. Easy enough for the user to correct, as long as they don't have images they're trying to hang on to, but I imagine not everyone will immediately notice the change.
Also, nth the flickr/delicious integration.

I don't care that my post was deleted. I don't like the format.
One reason I quit using the small text in my posts is that my own eyesight has gotten seriuosly worse over the last two years. I can't read small text that good anymore. And with the spell check gone--now there's something we could all use--now I miss all these typos I can't see anymore because the text in the windows is so small. Which is annoying in itself. So, for me, because the top text in the top half of the page is now so small, these new columns are a lot harder to read and I can't do anything about that. If I make the text large enough to read on the lower half, it looks like some sort of chimera on the user page, like two very different things stitched together, unless I choose to use the same font as the tiny text columns. What's the point in being able to choose a font that won't match half the page ? Not much. So, no, I don't particularly like it. It's harder to read and I have less control over what I can do with my user page. For me, this is not a user friendly change.

The revamped user pages are mostly nice, but a couple of things are really odd.
The link to the user's website would be far easier to find amongst the contact info than where it is in the page title.
The section where users get to witter on about their user name or whatever has a lot of stuff in that now looks weird when stripped of context. Could the question that these bits were originally written in answer to be restored¿
It seems odd that the geographical proximity of other MeFites should take up the majority of the page. (On consideration, this is exacerbated in my case because I live in NYC and have nothing to say about myself in that section above, but it's something like 80% of the page).

Ah, thank you. Although I suppose I should admit my "seems fine" is more of a "don't care." It didn't seem broke, and this doesn't seem to fix anything. If I had to offer a comment, the font size increase (thank you thank you thank you) makes the table columns on my screen too narrow so there are ugly line breaks in the comment and thread counts. Maybe go to two columns at the top and put the "social" stuff below? Also, I agree that replacing the URL info with "website" removes easily accessible, useful information for no reason.

Why don't y'all go read a large print Reader's Digest now that you've ruined my internet experience?
Tongue partly in cheek, I acknowledge the importance of usability and really, it's not something worth getting upset about. Also, I've worn glasses since I was seven, and am legally not even allowed to walk without them, let alone drive.

Are you high? It was a giant mess that took up 3-4 screens full of information that could fit in one, like it does now. The information itself is now organized towards stuff about you, stuff about what you do on mefi, and stuff about other people you are connected to.

That's why the fonts were smaller, to make it fit best. It works great if you have your fonts below 16px (12points) and a browser around 1000px wide. People with larger fonts/smaller screens will get line breaks happening naturally.
Also, I agree that replacing the URL info with "website" removes easily accessible, useful information for no reason.
Printing out the url was a bit of an eyesore (some people put in 200 character URLs) and you can get the same information by simply hovering over the word "website".

I think there needs to be at least one space between the top part and the question "What's the deal with your nickname?", etc. Without the space, it's looking a little bit smooshed, particularly with people who have longer lists in the top section.

It's a bit ugly, but I assume you're going to tighten it up later in terms of line-heights and stuff.
No big deal either way. It's not something we see that often, anyway.
What I'd like to know is what we can and cannot include in our profile customizations. Images are out, clearly, and I seem to recall that we were barred from using offsite css files... is html still allowed, or stripped? Inline css?

Inline css is actually what most of the profiles were using (mine for example) and it goes away if you try to alter your profile. I used my other username and messed around with the profile some a while back and all of the html I tried went away too.

No, but I've been thinking lately I could use something and was wondering the other day who I could call to get some. It's been a while.
Anyway, no need to question my mental state; I just use the profile pages in a different way than you do, and value different things there than you do. It happens. The changes didn't make the way I use those pages any easier, and removed information that was nice to see at the top, at first glance, for no reason I could understand. Cut the URLs at 50 characters if you have to, but please consider bringing them back.
That's why the fonts were smaller, to make it fit best.
Right, I got that; what I'm (rather elliptically) saying is that if you have the table set up in such a way that it only looks good with a small font size, maybe you should set up the table differently. I'm done now.

Would it make sense to make the linked user numbers a link, rather than having that small text link beneath it? Either to anchor links on the contact page for "linked to" and "linked by," or even both just going to the contact page?
So:
Links to: 0 users
Linked by: 9 users
That way the "linked numbers" scheme carries through from the posts column?
(I fear I'm being horribly unclear here...)

Brill!
I second/third/whatever the request to put the website in the contact info column rather than the header.
Also, is there any good reason to have email addresses in the "blah at blah dot com" style instead of a clickable mailto: link? Copying, pasting and editing an address when you want to mail someone is just a needless faff - if spam is the reason for it, maybe some sort of javascript obfuscation could be used.
