Europe Admin Needed September 22, 2006 2:53 AM Subscribe
Hey Matt and Jess, how's about promoting a mod from Europe, or dare I say Australia, so we can kill crap like this before we give the self-promoting little jerk a soapbox? (I'm only half kidding.)
It may be time to introduce a global mod but I would suggest that anyone that springs to mind is a bad idea. They'll have ideas as to who may be able to appropriately handle the responsibility.

This is the third time this guy has gotten called out. The last time was a questionable callout. The time before not so questionable. This one is a conscious violation of one of Metafilter's fundamental rules. The guy is moving from edge cases to just blatantly doing whatever he pleases and he's waiting till the admins are asleep. What more can he do to get himself booted?

Another vote for this. I'd say i'd do it myself as I'm on here enough (lurking usually).
I'd prefer a way of vanishing posts from the FP depending on how many flags its received. Then it can be moderated when a mod wakes from their dreamy slumber.

I think lemonfridge's idea has been previously discussed. Craigslist has something similar, no? But the thing is, then any time a post by somebody you don't like is on the main page, you could theoretically (if you had enough sockpuppets) flag it into oblivion.
But I mean, jesus. You can't get much more blatant of a self-link than:
Now, before you rip me apart because I'm hosting this page, I want you to know that it does serve a purpose and I don't think there's anything like it out there
Awesome!

Maybe just a script that auto-deletes posts that start with something like "Before you berate me for self-linking..." and end with "Mods can delete this if they want, I don't care".

I've thought about this too - but the thing is, if you do this, and otherwise legitimate posts are flagged into oblivion, then surely you'd under the banhammer as well? Surest way to make sure people don't abuse it.
Also, anyone find sawthesign's MySpace profile?

A selflink that stays up for a while does not need a new policy. The post will be removed in due course. What you don't know is the magnitude of potential problems that triangulated overlord miscommunication could foist on the place if another umpire is added. And having a 'vote off the island' system is fortunately not how Mefi works. Relax. All is fine with the world.

I think the suggestion by lemonfridge is great. It would push something into a queue to be brought out later if mod approved and any gaming of the system could be dealt with as only members, (with ip addresses), can flag. Most of all I don't think more chiefs needs to be the answer.

lemonfridge is onto something. But screw flags. How about once the IMG tag appears 5 times in a new thread it automatically goes into limbo until a mod vets it? That way those elephant pissing pix could actually serve a function.

Abuse could be very quickly dealt with as the post is only hidden, and help kill sockpuppets: lots of 'hide' flags within a short timeframe from lots of different users for a post which didn't suck would lead to instant banning of those users! Would sockpuppets really risk 5$*X for a silly trick that would be reverted anyway when #1/#292 logs on
(OT: I saw a forum once that had a stupidity filter: spelling mistakes, lame formatting, '|337 5p34k' common grammer mistakes, and admin discretion added stupidity points to an account; when it reach a threshold: bannination!)

It's not a bad idea at all, but does this happen often enough to warrant it? Even if it's preventative, though, still worth considering.
Over at the Ambrosia Software boards and irc channel we have some moderators/ops from Europe and Australia to spread out the coverage and it catches this kind of stuff in no time.

The straight forward thing to do would be to shove all new posts between 12 a.m. and 8 a.m. EST into a serial approval queue, which gets dumped whenever the mods wake up, check the stories in it, and approve for front page. Tough on our European pals, but better than shit stains on the front page regularly.

On one hand, is it so bad to let a post last all night? It lets some posters blow of steam. On the other hand, it sets a bad example for newbies, IMO.

What matteo and cruchland said.
I am vehemently opposed to any type of automated admin action, especially ones prompted by user-response. That would defeat the purpose of an autosystem by making a lot more shit for Matt and Jess to slog to since people would inevitably try to game it.
I think the dynamic duo have everything well in hand.
Also:
OT: I saw a forum once that had a stupidity filter: spelling mistakes, lame formatting, '|337 5p34k' common grammer mistakes, and admin discretion added stupidity points to an account; when it reach a threshold: bannination!
10 points.

Great minds think alike, Jimbob; I suggested this a couple of hours before your post in the thread just below this.
please God no, it'll be just another administrator to second guess
That problem can be easily addressed: Authorize the Eurafricasialian mod to only remove clear self-links from the MeFi front page. Maybe they could also remove obviously inappropriate rants from AskMe like the "don't you morons work?" question, but that's it.
Keep it simple, but get to the self-linkers and jerks faster. Makes sense to me.

So how many points would you have gotten for the above? On my board, it's going to be immediate 24 hours sit-in-the-corner for anyone who misspells a word in a grammar nazi comment, and you'll have to write me a letter of apology if you ever say nauseous when you mean nauseated or misspell the word tongue.
Seriously, I don't read the board in the middle of the night, so I could care less what's there.

I love it when people get all Amerocentric about the Filter. Having said that I don't think a European/Asian/Australian mod is necessary. At the end of the day if it's a crap FPP or breaks the guidelines just flag it, ignore it and move on. Just treat it like other posts that you aren't interested in. But having said that, I am a relative newbie and so my opinion should be discounted anyway. It is funny when some of the people (a small minority) think that as they have been here the longest their views should hold more credence than others. I have read good and bad posts from across the range of user profiles.
The FPPer concerned was obviously a gobshite of the highest order. The saddest thing was erudite Mefites getting into a a game of gobshite tennis with said gobshite. I am sure he would have felt so much less vindicated if he anxiously pressed refresh every five minutes for all those hours and it still sat at 0 comments.

carsonb: sorry, regretting the snark response, SteveInMaine. selecting users for any sort of special notice based on their user number is not a good idea.
My fault. I made a clumsily-phrased comment (as usual). My point is that if the requirement is for a user who has been here at least long enough to make a post on MeFi, it elimates the chance that somebody will drop 50 bucks for 10 sockpuppets just to be able to hide a post. Though I doubt anybody would spend that much cash just to tweak another user.

Wow, thanks for the compliment, sgt (and others). I really am touched that anyone would consider me as suitable for something like this.
Quite apart from anything else and not that I would be expecting an e-mail asking me to do this in the next million years or so, the fact that it has taken me over two days to notice this thread shows the fatal flaw - I don't do MeFi on weekends. Plus, I'd get all drunk with the power and try to make things back to the way they were in the Golden Days of MeFi.
