dimeadozen.org, a torrent site, requires signing up for an account. Would it make a good post?

I just found a site, dimeadozen.org, that I think might make a good Metafilter post. It's got torrents of tons and tons of live concerts. (I'm listening right now to the Tom Waits show in Nashville that I saw last weekend.) The problem is that it requires you to sign up for an account, and there's a limited number of account slots available each day. Would this still make a good post?

There was an ancestry.com FPP. I signed up for a "Guest Account". Now I can't stop ancestry.com from spamming me. Sign-ups bad.

I think you can have your cake and eat it, too. By posting the url here, you have told enough of us about it, while still keeping it on the downlow from the mass of metafilter lurkers, et. al. Plus, you haven't wasted your daily front page post quota. Everyone wins!

Go ahead and post it. People that are interested can always bookmark it for later.

You should probably be more worried about the copyright infringement angle.

We are very sorry!

At the moment, there are at least 98,100 registered users at www.dimeadozen.org, the maximum allowed under DIME's current configuration.

However, free slots become available for new users daily as inactive accounts are deleted.

Maybe we should do something similar at Metafilter to free up accounts?

Thanks, Otis, that answers my question. I'll just leave this as a Metatalk post, and reiterate that the Tom Waits Ryman show is well worth downloading. And I'm not at all biased because I sat in the second row, dead center, about ten feet from Tom himself.

I joined Dime just to get the Vivian Stanshall radio torrents. I ended up downloading and then seeding a few other things to get a ratio of 1 (because I try to avoid being a dick), but I don't think I've been back since.

FWIW, McAfee Site Advisor gives this dimeadozen site a green... and that means they tested it for spam and didn't get any.

Yes, DIME is not an email-collecting spam machine. I have a friend who is very into that site.

I believe it is account-based due to enforcement of ratios. Quite a few torrent sites are doing this now.

Whereas on public torrent sites (PirateBay, IsoHunt), you can leech away, these account-based sites actually track your ratios and in some cases enforce/penalize people for having a ratio below 1:1. What the penalty is I do not know as I usually leave my torrents up until they are at least a 1:1 share.

I managed to sign up without a problem (had to retry once). Don't like the Tom Waits Nashville show though - the audience screaming is louder than the music. Am downloading the Ryman one and seeding the other.
