Waiving front page posting limit? July 21, 2006 12:37 PM   Subscribe

Would it be possible to have the 24-hour posting limit waived if your last post was a double and deleted?

come on.

are you serious?

So let me get this straight: After making a double post (which generally happens out of irresponsibility or laziness), you want the opportunity to provide yet another link for the mods to delete due to your irresponsibility and laziness?

(and you're so impatient that you can't wait 24 hours to repost a repost again?)

No.

Self-admitted laziness, even.

Cool, thanks jessamyn, and thanks bigmusic and SpecialK for your kind and considered responses. Close away.

If your FPP can't wait 24 hours, then it probably doesn't deserve to be posted.

It's a matter of timing, but hey, I was stupid for even asking. Carry on.

Everybody get back to the 12345 thread!

Some of the people whose posts are deleted are deliberately trying to flaunt the rules, hoping to sneak one by the moderators or to get something on the front page until the moderators notice and delete it.

One reason for the 24-hour rule is to prevent a posting-battle between abusers and the moderators, "What? You deleted my post? Well, I'll just post it again! What do you think about that?"

What Matt thinks is that he controls the code and has instituted a 24-hour rule even for deleted posts so that abusive posters can't do that.

I got excited and came here prematurely.

Kudos, sir.

Well, what is it?

persona non grata writes "It's a matter of timing, but hey, I was stupid for even asking. "

Rarely is something so time sensitive that it can't wait less than 24 hours a good FPP.

But what if an awesome YouTube video of a cat I want to post gets deleted by tomorrow!!!

If I'm missing out on the last few moments during which I can convince FOX to bring back Arrested Development I'm gonna be pissed.

You people just don't understand.

Some of us are so selfless, and all we want to do is give and give and give, and then give some more. Yet, the Man says we only have one golden opportunity a day to share. And, boy, is he picky! He only wants unique things, so we're forced to sit on our hands and watch as others give their little tidbit, and get chewed up and spit out by Metafilter.

Yeah, and you ridicule persona non grata for just wanting to share all the goodness that the world has to offer.

You should be effing ashamed, you voracious, insatiable bastards!

Wow, you sure are a fun bunch. ;-) As much as I was wondering because I do have something I'd like to post, I also know that sometimes a double is not the result of trying to game the system or laziness but instead because a URL has changed, the search is wonky (less of a problem than it used to be) or the original post was oddly presented, or a combination of those. In cases where a double poster is not at fault it seems to me that they might have another go, but, hey, that wasn't the case with me and I invited this and this is your pile on so have at it! I will have my revenge and, ohhhh yes, it will involve YouTube!

this is your pile on so have at it!

C'mon guys, he says it's okay! Can I say "STFU n00b" now? I've never said it before. I'm dying to say it just once...

Seriously, though 24 hours is not that long to wait. Thanks for being a sport, though.

Yeah. In summary:
1. You never ever ever have to post a given worthwhile post within 24 hours of any particular moment, so it's not worth making an exception for doubleposters.
2. Thanks for being a sport.

Hmmm. I just looked at your posting history. Pretty good links. I mean, you're not exactly up to this caliber yet, but it's a damn good start.
posted by mds35 at 1:55 PM on July 21, 2006

Further, if you joined a few weeks ago, how do you know about the search and how crappy it used to be? That was like way back in the day -- maybe June even. Lurker, bannee, or sock puppet?
posted by mds35 at 1:57 PM on July 21, 2006

I know it's tough to get a grip on what sort of heroic measures you're supposed to go through to absolutely and totally rule out a double post, so I sympathize with your general sentiment and appreciate your good sportliness.

However, a search in the regular MeFi search box for the word "humans" finds the original post of your link (admittedly with a slightly different URL) ninth. That's page one in case you've never used the search before.

So, see it as a laziness tax. One day in the no-post pokey. Things will be fine tomorrow, brand new day and all that.

brand new day and all that.

Yeah, that's what I figured, jessamyn, and though I did do a search I obviously wasn't paying close enough attention... My dog ate my search results...

mds35: I've been a lurker here for years, then a bannee, now a responsible member of the community. I have been rehabilitated! Prasie the lord and pass the pipe!

who were you before you got banned? inquiring minds want to know.

I think we should institute the blink tag for lightheartedly sarcastic comments (as opposed to meanspiritedly sarcastic).

You gotta pay some price for your double - 24 hrs is a pretty small one.
posted by caddis at 2:16 PM on July 21, 2006

it's called a slap on the wrist. If it's a good link, it'll still be a good link 24 hours from now.
