Re-Post with Pictures? July 16, 2006 9:54 AM   Subscribe

I'm somewhat new to Ask MetaFilter, is it ok (scratch that), is it proper to re-post or a make a new post now that pictures are supplied? A few weeks ago I posted a question about the value of a Coke bottle with pork rib bones inside. At the time I had no pictures to go along with the original post, but a few days later I was able to post some, by that time the post was history - no response.

Thank you for your consideration.

You should probably post the pictures in the original question which is still open.

I've never been so relieved that I can't get recyclable bottles of Coke any more.

Why bother? Only one person (mzurer) mentioned needing to see photos in the original thread, and I suspect that was more from curiosity than a genuine need to see the Coke bottle in order to answer your question. You got plenty of answers in that thread, what more are you hoping to get in a new thread?

I would post in the original as long as it's open (it would seem that the admins consider it a valid thread until it's closed, not just while it's on the front page). Try emailing folks who responded to let them know there's an update to your question. If they have an email on their profile page, then they're open to being contacted.

By the way, how do you know they are pork bones?

One of the nice things about the "My Comments" feature is that you can easily see which threads you've commented in have new information. You should post your photos in your thread, and I wouldn't bother emailing anyone.

I just reread your question and saw that you had posted in the thread. Really, my guess is that people just didn't find that the photos added anything to your question -- I mean, I can perfectly well imagine what a Coke bottle with pork bones looks like, and guess at the value. A photo of said monstrosity is not really going to change my answer.

I don't know what it's worth, but I'll pay you $10 to drink it. Of course, I'll need proof by way of a YouTube video FPP.

It seems fine in the original thread. That was one of my favorite questions this month.

Aren't valuation threads kind of surveys? "What do you think it's worth?" is no different from "What would you do in situation X?" There's no "answer" that can be verified as true. It's just everyone's two-cent opinion on the matter. Survey! Chatfilter! :)
posted by scarabic at 1:25 PM on July 16, 2006

scarabic, I think it depends a lot on what is being valued. Like in this case, ok's porkbone-coke is so unique that it's not something you can just google and find a valuation guide. However, given the collective oddities of MeFi, somebody here might actually know of a potential market or resource for something like this. (I'm sort of relieved that none of us does).

They're here, in the thread. Or here.

Oh ick! I looked at them again. I actually went and got something cold to drink at the store a little while ago, and Coke wasn't it. I just couldn't.

I don't get it. You were offered $5. Wasn't that enough for you? Considering you didn't know what the thing was worth, I thought you had found your answer...?
posted by UbuRoivas at 4:16 PM on July 16, 2006

Oh, correction: $20.

MrZero, I suppose the same applies for every chatfilter question: maybe there's someone here with specific expertise. Ask a chatfilter question like "what kind of person do you like to date?" and maybe someone will be publishing a study on cross-cultural mate selection criteria systems, both cognitive and societal. Cool! But in reality it's more like fifty people all chipping in their opinion, while the asker takes weather readings. In other words: a survey.

I don't really care, actually. I'm no opponent of chatfilter, actually. I find the line too fine to draw, and I don't see the harm in letting threads be. But since Matt and Jess seem intent on closing questions that simply poll opinion from the crowd and can't be answered in an authoritative way, I'm poking them in the ribs over this one.

Valuation threads are particularly stupid, really. There is a great way to answer any of them authoritatively: put the item for sale on eBay. If you're afraid of getting robbed, set a very high reserve price. Duh.

You misread the guidelines, or possibly never read them. We all know that the site doesn't run exactly like you want it to scarabic, but calling a newish user's AskMe thread "stupid" in the MeTa thread that they started to ask a question about it seems a bit churlish even for you.

I don't know what it's worth, but I'll pay you $10 to drink it.

Dude, this is genius! Here is what you do:

1. Set up a website "Make OK Drink the Pork Cola." Include a paypal link and a blog. Describe the soda, post the pics, and offer to drink it if people pledge X dollars, with Y% going to some charity that everyone likes. Something for children.

2. Post your website to Projects. Then I (or anyone) will post it to the blue.

3. Watch as the story gets picked up on Boingboing, Fark, etc. You'll be the toast of the internets!

4. Enjoy your appearances on Good Morning America and the Howard Stern show.

5. When you have reached the goal, drink the soda, perhaps on Letterman. His doctor could be standing by. Post the video on YouTube.

6. Profit!

Opportunity is knocking, OK. Are you going to answer the door? If not email me, as I would like to buy that soda from you.

Why all the hate? You know, someone in the community may have actually sold a bottle of Coke Pink.

LarryC, that's my idea. You'll be hearing from my ogrish patent lawyer in the morning. He has really bad breath. Oh, and tusks.

I'm not an antique expert by any means, though I did have a pre-WW2 coke collecting fetish for about a year. That said, I'm sure you can get more than $20 for it. For a one-off, unopened rarity like that, I'd expect to see at least a couple of zero's tacked to the end.

One of the nice things about the "My Comments" feature is that you can easily see which threads you've commented in have new information.

Not exactly.. I'm never sure if I have this right, but here goes. If you haven't commented in a thread for more than two weeks, My Comments will not find new activity.

Check the FAQ noob (to myself as I was about to hit post):
Looks like that was changed to 30 days (which is great!), but I think the FAQ description is slightly wrong.
It shows the last ten comments in any thread you have commented in that is less than 30 days old.
I think that should read "It shows the last ten comments in any thread you have commented in within the last 30 days."

Well, that still isn't right.. How about:
Of the threads you have made comments in, within the last 30 days, it shows the ten threads which have received new comments most recently. For each of these threads, the page displays your most recent contribution and all subsequent comments, or the most recent ten, whichever is shorter.
posted by Chuckles at 8:17 PM on July 16, 2006

Well, that could still be improved..
Of the threads you have made comment(s) in, within the last 30 days, the My Comments page shows the ten which have received new comments most recently. For each thread, the page displays comments starting from your most recent, or the most recent ten from any user, whichever is shorter.
No more vanity revisions, I promise!

Given the thread is less than 30 days old, it's rather a moot point for this example.

As for the rewrite:

My Comments shows the last ten comments for any thread you have commented in within the last 30 days.

if that's the case. If it's not the case, then:

My Comments shows the last ten comments for any thread less than 30 days old in which you have commented.

My Comments shows the last ten comments for threads in which you have participated within the past month, in the order of their latest activity.

I, too, have been somewhat confused about what is included on the MyComments page. Thanks for trying to clarify it. I think I get it now. Maybe.

I changed the faq to say what fff said which was clearer than what was there.
