Would it be okay to post a link to my book in a post? July 14, 2006 10:57 AM Subscribe
I wanted to post about the current threat to abortion rights along with some links to information about how to get or do abortions. One of the links I wanted to include was to a book that I worked on. Is it inapropriate to put this post on the main page? (Since I wasn't sure, I posted it on projects.) Advice?
Great idea?
Now, would it be wrong to repost in the main page? (Or I geuss I could delete the entry on the projects page...)

Butt Matt or Jess can, and probably will, given that it doesn't look like a project so much as a post for the blue...

A more inside would be fine, I imagine - maybe you could email mathowie or jessamyn and ask them to delete the Projects post and stick it on MetaFilter?

Please allow the Project Post to come to term. Thank you.

Wait, what does 'come to term' mean? Oh, nevermind. I'm slow.

Are projects still being approved by Matt, like Anonymous AskMe questions?
Also, arrrgh on the fact that the main link of that Project was a .pdf. Please label if you're going to do that. (Yeah, yeah, I know, mouseover/statusbar. It would still be courteous.)

And I'm lame. Don't give me a second thought.

It's okay to include a link to something you did in a more inside. If it's a link to buy something though, please don't do that. Also, you didn't ask but since this is here: advocacy threads rarely go well here on MetaFilter, even for topics where there is not a huge amount of controversy. "Sign my petition" types of posts aren't appreciated and people can show their lack of appreciation by acting badly in your thread. I have no idea if this is your plan, and I haven't checked your posting history to see if this is your style.
If there is something on the web that you think other MetaFilter users will appreciate, or if something really new has happened in the abortion debate, or you are linking to things on the web that you think people may not have seen, please go ahead. However if abortion rights is just something that you feel strongly about enough so you want to make a post to make others feel strongly about it, please keep in mind that those posts are hard to do well, easy to do badly and people will let you know loudly and possibly with some malice if you manage the latter.
This is just cautionary advice, not any sort of proscription on what you do or do not post, but be mindful of the existing community here when you decide how to craft your post.

... and apparently I'm about an hour late. Your post looks interesting. If you want me to remove the projects post or fix your link [I'm not sure what you did wrong], you can email me to let me know.

Thanks for the advice. Very helpful as I'm still fairly new. Ya, please delete the projects post. And I meant the first sentance of my main page post to link to the state ballot issues site, but don't worry about it - no problem.
As to the advocacy issue, I hear what you're saying. I was actually mostly posting towards an audience of already pro-choice people with 1) an update on the rapidly changing legal status of abortion and 2) information on how to actually do abortions (which I think most readers wouldn't already know about.) Hope that's OK.
Anyhow, thanks for your help!
