Athanasius Kircher has joined metafilter (hooray!). But wait...He is not here to enlighten us, but rather to demand that jonson give them credit for his Blue Fugate post.

If Kircher were paying attention, he might have noticed that jonson's post included an entirely different link to what was, coincidentally, the same article. What's the matter, not selling enough ad impressions?
posted by monju_bosatsu at 10:02 AM on July 11, 2006

from the faq:

Is it necessary or mandatory to add a [via] link if you found it from another site?
No. Many people do this as a courtesy, but it is in no way mandatory

This isn't even a via! This is "You're discussing something that we've discussed in the past. Please give us credit for liking it before it was popular." Kircher, are you wearing pants? Should I give you credit since I'm also wearing pants?

I wouldn't call that 'demanding'. But still, I'm embarrassed for him. Ugh.

Yeah, bloggers who go around demanding 'credit' for stuff are stupid. I don't put vias on links generally, because I don't want to encourage fools who think that links somehow belong to them.

What's an "Athanasius Kircher"?

I think this is like that MeTa thread asking whether any famous people were members of MetaFilter and a bunch of people interpreted "famous people" to mean "random bloggers."

Never heard of this Athanasius Kircher before now, although I've known about the Blue Fugates for a few years now. It's pretty laughable for some blogger to come over here and demand credit for stuff like this.

Looking at his profile page, I'm reminded of how close we are to User #40,000 coming along. (I know, I know, it's kind of meaningless since we all know that not everyone follows through with their five bucks, plus the sockpuppet thing, but still.)

I'd say that kircher's inexplicable behavior means that the Society just lost itself a reader, but I already took it out of my bookmarks a month or so ago.

Mebbe spend a little more time working on your content and less on... whatever the hell this is.

The Kircher Society guy was just asking for a via. There's no "demand" here. It came across as a bit snotty and rude, I guess, but he's probably just adopting a kind of formal persona for quasi-humourous effect like he does in his blog.

Also, jonson was the first to make a snotty reply.

I guess my comment belongs here:

kircher writes "Without discounting the possibility of coincidence, we assumed that this posting had its origins in our Proceedings two days earlier, in which case we request only that we receive some credit or acknowledgement for having called your attention to the Blue Fugates. If the timing was mere coincidence and you discovered the Fugates independently, then our apologies for raising the issue."

If he wanted a via, he should've emailed jonson. If he wanted to direct traffic to his blog he could have self-linked, there's no law against it in the comments. Posting as he did just seems passive agressive and petty. jonson earned the right to snark, IMO.

Wow, I love the Kirchner site, it is one of my favorite new finds - which I think I learned about right here on Mefi in a prior via, but I forget who posted it. Great content, always interesting.

I also love jonson and his consistently amusing posts. What's a girl to do?

I am delighted that he/she/it made a sufficiently abject apology that the matter is resolved, the tar & feathers stored away for another day, and I can offer a heartfelt welcome our new member. Despite the awkward fumble at the onset - and who among us hasn't made an embarassing entry somewhere before? - I hope we can all live happily ever after.

Well, that goes without saying. It's a quality site. Nevertheless, the hazing in response to his initial arrogance must continue. It dies with this thread though.

Is it ok to say that I think that the little bit of the above that makes any sense at all is really tacky? Offering something back to a site that turned you on to something cool is "encouraging fools who think that links somehow belong to them"?

Ooookay...

posted by jonson at 10:38 PM on July 11, 2006

Don't bother posting a link at all if its on [a top-rated blog in a particular field of interest].

Honestly, anyone interested in technology is already going to be reading at least one of the top-rated tech sites. Anyone interested in politics is already reading one of the top-rated poliblog sites. And so on.

If a link on a [top-rated blog in its field] hasn't propagated to the other [top-rated blogs in same field] within a few days, then it's not yet a meme and might be considered for MeFi. It should be an odd or innovative meme, IMHO.
