Mefi Bug Tracker April 10, 2006 3:14 PM   Subscribe

I suggest implementing a bug tracking system for MetaFilter to track all the bugs and feature requests.

You could use for example the HELPNEEDED tag for things you might need help fixing. You can set priorities on bugs so that the most important and urgent problems will be fixed first. You can set WONTFIX for features that you aren't going to implement, and that way people will know not to bug you about the issue. You can enable voting for bugs and feature requests so you'll have a better idea of where to focus your efforts, you could easily assign small issues to jessamyn, etc.

Did you guys hear something?

As far as I've seen, most true bugs here are quashed within a day or so of being found, so a troubleticket system wouldn't be particularly helpful. What comes up the most (and lingers the most) are feature requests.

I know this gets said too much, but seriously: What the fuck just happened? I'm going to start looking both ways before entering threads.

Status: Enhancement
Milestone: Right around Duke Nukem Forever

Yeah, maybe you want to buy a service and support contract while you're at it. Give the guy a break.

Alternatively, we could just point out fewer bugs and feature requests.

Sorry. I'm bumping this request up to level 2.

Unless there is a pre-existing package I can just unzip and start using (and no, don't say bugzilla), this adds more complications than it solves.

I think you misplet "and that way people will whine that the bug should be reopened".

Seriously, what problem is getting solved here? I don't think it's that mathowie can't tell what needs working on.

You're going to need supervisor approval for that priority 2, mister.

This feature request is a duplicate of a preexisting feature request, so I'm closing this ticket.

mathowie, I've set up the bug tracking system here:
http://solsc.com/bugme/
The system uses FlySpray.
I've emailed you the administrator username/password.

Yeah. Good luck with that.

Also, I've set up a diet plan for you, which should complement well your new exercise regimen. We'll need daily weigh-ins, mind you.

Matt is under no obligation to communicate priorities or timelines for fixes. Just stating it for the record.

Sharcho,

The reason you're getting this guff is that you're setting up a solution for a problem that doesn't really exist. I appreciate the work that went into it, but, no matter how easy the FlySpray bug tracking system is, it can't be as easy as the current system is for matt.

I agree. Lighten up people. You paid for metafilter as is, no patches guaranteed. :P

Also, the frequent-flyer thing. And the "please redesign the system so I don't inadvertently help people who don't deserve it" thing.

Looking at the number of bug posts: wow.

Looking at the contents, though: wow, in a good way. That's some pretty good bug trackin'!

Looking at the people who don't deserve it thing: wow. Not in a good way.

Metafilter: where's my five nines?

Okay, we'ere in debug mode people. Nobody leaves until you've each found five fresh bugs.

you could easily assign small issues to jessamyn

Some rabid MeFi fan could set up a bugtracker and featurerequester that just keeps tabs on the issues that have come up in MeTa and then follows them with a fanatic zeal. I'd like to watch that.

Cortex, you messed up your links. That's okay, though, I've fixed them for you... Matt, you don't need to worry about this one.

Also, I've set up a diet plan for you, which should complement well your new exercise regimen. We'll need daily weigh-ins, mind you.

I've added some sample issues to the bug tracker here.

I got a rock.

You may have tried to use a naughty URL to interact with the database backend using SQL injection. If this is true, go to the corner and think about your actions. When you return, please do not do it again!

So you're just going to keep tabs on stuff posted here? A bugtracker operating without the involvement of mathowie seems... staggeringly pointless.

That search engine bug won't be closed in my lifetime.

jack_mo, obviously, if mathowie doesn't get involved, it won't be worth much.

Can we also get a quonsar quip tracking system?

The main problem, of course, is weeding through the duplicates and the just plain not funny ones to get to the true turds--I mean gems.

Sounds like we need a bug tracking system for the bug tracking system.

Hot naughty backdoor SQL injection. Rar!

We need someone to log the times that everyone posts a comment, so that we can see to the minute which is the busiest time of day, aggregated over time. On a web tracker. With SQLs and shit.

Well, granted. You wouldn't want to do it just once.
