Should including long humorous tags in AskMe posts (like ihopeclayaikendoesnthaveabiggerpenisthanmetoo) be frowned upon?

We should make sure that somebody's frowning on it, just to keep the karmic balance steady. And then we should carry on doing it.

If we ever hope to make tags a useful tool that helps people find posts they're looking for, then yes, we should frown upon it.

If we're going to abandon the idea of usefulness altogether, then no, let's embrace it.

Assuming you've already added useful tags to a post, how does the presence of joke tags stop the real ones from being useful?

I don't think it affects the usefulness of tags, as long as other more accurate tags are included too. Plus it makes me smile.

If these long tags gum up the works for people searching for particular topics, it could be seen as a Bad Thing. I'm not sure how searches through tags would work if a substring matched, so the point could be moot.

I guess my concern relates to the future value of tags. Particularly if people start conducting searches on tag contents (in the above example, someone with a legitimate sexual question about a "bigger penis" would receive an unrelated post). This would be compounded if a tag cliche became popular.

Tags will be much more useful when we're allowed to tag eachother's shit. I'm actually pretty sick of "it'll get abused" being a reason for MeFi not having cool features added. Put it in, and anyone that can't play nicely can get banned. Having an anti-banning policy combined with having a conservative development policy just in case is one thing guaranteed to keep MetaFilter's wings clipped.
