AskMe for free graphic design? November 6, 2005 9:46 PM Subscribe
AskMe for free graphic design? It's a good cause, but it's still a solicitation; I get plenty of those through other channels, don't really think they belong here too.
Speaking of graphic design, how's about that Metafilter redesign? Or was that like a joke?

Well, I may be turning into an old curmudgeon, but it honestly doesn't strike me as a "good cause" at all. Redesigning your web-site post-Katrina hardly strikes me as an urgent priority. I'd rather see those student's spare time spent in assisting the displaced poor. It seems to me that if you have the werewithall to attend law school, you don't really need free web-design.

Plus, this is matt's major source of income and the site is pretty much a joke. Down for hours at a time every day, projects promised done and then forgotten.
And he's making money every day from people joining. So "sense of entitlement"? Fuck yeah.

puke & cry, am I twisting your arm to be here?
I'm working on the projects site now, hoping to get it launched this week. I've been doing this site for a living for all of one week and haven't gotten as many bugs fixed and features built as I'd like, but I'm hoping to make some headway in the next few weeks. And yes, the site is a joke and I've never claimed otherwise that it was built well or reliable, so I'm not quite sure what you're reacting against. I'm doing what I can.

And while you're bitching, I guess I'll explain the redesign dragging since you say I'm avoiding inquiries (where do I do that?). As you can tell, people here freak out over the tiniest change so completely revamping the site's layout and color scheme isn't something to be taken lightly. I wanted to start with other new sections in the new design first, and refine the design somewhat from where it was at when the contest happened.
There was no timeline for the contest -- I was merely looking for new ideas on how to start from scratch with a layout and color scheme, and I put up $400 to entice designers on the site to give it a go. I got plenty of good ideas and one design was better than the rest, but as I explained, it's not something I'm just going to push out on everyone overnight. The sites have looked the same for 6+ years now and I've kind of got an ebay problem in terms of user expectations that the design doesn't change drastically.

"I'm doing what I can".
You don't know how to run a website that should be able to handle major traffic. Just admit it. Your just a technology nerd that got lucky and ended up making a living off of a website.
You make money every day from a site that you struggle to run. You refuse outside help when it's offered, for free I would add. That's a mystery no one can understand, as far as I know. You don't have a clue what you're doing. You ought to be fired.

If this site sucks so much and I'm doing everything wrong and I'm an idiot for doing it, I'm wondering why you're still here. I'm not trying to kick you out, but if I'm at a bar and the patrons are starting fights and it's too smoky and the beer selection blows I don't tell the bartender he's a dipshit until I'm blue in the face, I find a new bar.
Honestly, what's the point of your outburst here?

I joined as soon as Matt opened up membership, not because of an urge to launch into a posting frenzy and hear myself talk, but to thank Matt for what he so selflessly done for others, by hosting this place. I know I wouldn't have the patience to tolerat a lot of what gos on around here.

Sorry, puke & cry - I've been reading MetaFilter for a long time, and I'm calling bullshit on you because most of what you've said simply isn't true.
It's very possibly true to say that Matt isn't the most naturally gifted coder about. You imply he covers this up. He doesn't. I recall several instances of Matt saying certain developments were beyond his present skills or expertise, with more advanced search tweaks (this is going a while back) being on example. I recall another example from only the last month or so, but I forget what the specfic issue was.
On both occasions Matt was keen to accept help from the community. I am only guessing here, but I perhaps a lot of the offers of help simply don't materialise. That's not necessarily a poor reflection on anyone, it's just the way things are sometimes.
The piss-poor admin accusation is the hardest to take seriously. I don't know Matt's coding skills, but I've seen websites and also intranets with coding wizards that don't have the first clue how to administer when the issue is a soft, human behavioural issue. Matt has an unbelievable amount of cack to clean up at this site on a regular basis, and the fact he has just made the site his full-time job, let alone let it continue for so long, is, to me, a f***ing miracle.
Personally I find it encouraging that you don't necessarily have to be a coding-wizard to found such a successful website: it seems to also take entrepreneurial skills, humanity and judgement.
The only thing you have in your defence is that the new design and the projects area have taken a while to materialise. Fair enough, but there are reasons for this. Matt has given them, and you can probably add to that mix that he's, like many of us, incredibly busy (though good enough to not use it as an excuse).
I'm not trying to flame you at all, and I don't want to appear like I'm brown-nosing. I think Matt probably could use the very occasional kick up the backside from a community member once in a blue moon, but on the specific issues you mention I think you have fallen very wide of the mark, and, since Matt has been working full time on MetaFilter for all of one work, I think the manner and extent to which you've made your comments has been thoroughly unreasonable.

Hah. I must have hit "post " one second after you did, puke and cry.
Anywaze, apology accepted, ( which now sounds kind of lame, after my somewhat heated response). So I'll apologize for my own tone, in turn.
But seriously, that Matt is trying to make this site his day job is an admirable but risky proposition, at best. It's been less than a week, you might give the guy a chance before casting such broad aspersions on his skill-set. That this site became as successful as it is, enough to make ithis career change a gamble worth taking in his estimation, is more a testament to his management skills, to my mind.
It's a model of it's kind. Just as you say that this community is not all Matt, running a community of this size is not all codeslinging and mad web-skillz.
To bedgruge someone an opportunity to turn what was a labour of love into a potentialy viable business opportunity seems somewhat self-involved to me.

Why so harsh, puke & cry? If the site weren't good, you wouldn't feel so passionately about it, I expect - and it's due to Matt that it is so compelling. Yes, there are problems (the downtime, to me, is the only really serious one - I don't care if new features take a while to appear), but I'm thankful that Matt created the site, has made the choices he has in terms of running it, and - most importantly - has exhibited such perserverence and patience in sticking with it... I think there are very few people who could have carried it off over the long term.
Metafilter is a place where so many of us come every single day. No site and no adminstrator could endure that kind of intense scrutiny without revealing some flaws - but as flaws go, I would certainly choose those that exist over more intrinsic failings.

How about some manners, puke & cry? Manners are what I like about this place - I ignore that minority of users that spend their time attacking each other and enjoy the intelligent, reasoned and yes, polite, debate, that is so very rare on the internet. To be so ill-mannered towards the site's owner/administrator that has enabled this rarity, shows you are ignoring the very reason that Metafilter is a success.

You know, mathowie has accepted outside help where it's feasible. I think, though, that it's hard to find ways to manage contributions without comprimising security.
A lot of the "help" people seem to want to give is really just advice and opinions. People just don't seem to get that mathowie isn't going to convert his site to their favourite platform just so they can contribute code.

I will attack your administrative skills, I will attack your design skills and I will attack your coding skills. Make sure that your real name is on there because I will certainly, in exchange for my five bucks, want a permanent record of your incompetence.
Sound fair?
There is a huge difference between fair play and being a sycophant [sic].

How about 'the feeling of happiness and joy that comes with not having shit all over a nice guy who does a lot for us for no apparent reason.' That's my usual reason for sucking up to Matt. Or, you know, just not riding his ass as if I'm somehow entitled to tell him he sucks because I happen to love his website. Which, hey, when you think about it is more like a reason *not* to tell him he sucks.

You didn't. That would take courage and conviction -- two items you haven't displayed in this thread.
Instead of speaking your mind or generating an original thought, you decided to call me, and by association everyone who supports Matt against an absurd attack, a sycophant (look Ma, I spelled it right).
Now you want to play semantic games. Good luck with that, let me know how it goes.

Well, he has been paying his mortgage with income from this site for quite some time, and now it is his full time job, so... I think those are apparent reasons, don't you?
I'm sorry to be mean about it, but it is logic like that which ably earns the label sycophant.
I happen to love his website.
Some people have trouble here, I think. Is it 'his' website, or is it a community? Now, I'm not certain it has to be one or the other, but there are going to be times when the two interpretations come into conflict...
This isn't really one of those times, of course. This is just a case of one user getting a little over zealous and a whole bunch of others trying to get noticed (like me? whatever...). The idea that puke & cry should be disciplined for it is a little silly.

Chuckles, I think over zealous is a bit of an understatement:
Your just a technology nerd that got lucky and ended up making a living off of a website.
Well gee matt, I don't know? Just maybe, it's to call you on the bullshit you've been pushing here. Keep up the innocent act.
You don't have a clue what you're doing. You ought to be fired.
Puke boy isn't just speaking his mind, he is being abusive and I don't see any reason it should be tolerated. Speak to me that way in my house and being 'disciplined' is going to be the least of your worries.

cedar, he's not being abusive. He's stating his opinion. It's no different then all the people who say nice things about matt. Let puke&cry bitch and moan. After a while he'll realize this accomplishes nothing and he'll stop. Let him be an example to others of how not to go about dealing with the site's problems.

Some law student at Tulane was panhandling for free graphic design for their student society news-letter, andrew. He invoked the Katrina disaster as the reason why others should contibute their free labour.
My own feeling was that the students probably have their priorities misplaced; that any free time they had would be better off spent assisting those in need.
It also struck me as odd that a fairly privileged group felt deserving of charitable aid for such a frivolity in the face of the catastorphic conditions around them. Kind of like complaining about the dearth of good golf-courses in Kabul.
As for my comment to that idiot puke & cry that Matt wasn't making money from Metafilter, I accidentally omitted the word "much" in there. I was pretty steamed, and both those posts are filled with typos. Anywaze, I stand by that comment, and still admire his courage in taking this risk.
In looking at his profile, I see that puke & cry describes himself as a "professional journalist" ( as opposed to an amateur journalist, I guess). If this is true, perhaps he'd be so kind as to submit some samples of his work-product; that we may compare his skill-set in his chosen field to that of Matt's in his.
My own guess, ( based on puke & cry's abysmal writing samples provided here) , is that Matt is likely a far more effective community leader than puke & cry is a journalist.
