There’s a simple way around this. Everytime vagus quotes the overlords bit, someone else adapts dresdn’s idea of referencing Stewie’s line from Family Guy regarding the line, “You are the Weakest Link”.

Man, a well-placed overlords comment is just GOLDEN. That joke is (almost) never old with me because of the time someone used it during the blackout. Welcoming our new Amish overlords. That was the BEST. So I'm predisposed to enjoy those comments. Didn't realize they were almost all posted by one guy, however.

Out of admiration of certain mefites who've posted in this thread, I've decided to alter my posting strategy.

What I'll do from now on is that ANY TIME A TV SHOW OR MOVIE IS MENTIONED I will be sure to mention that, no matter how tangential to the discussion this may be, I don't think that show/movie is funny.

example:

Mefite X: This reminds me of that Office episode where [funny thing happens.]

Me: God, do people actually like that show?!

example again:

Mefite X: Remember that Family guy episode where [funny thing happens.]

Me: Well, just to demonstrate that I'm not as chained to popular culture as you are, AND THAT MY SENSE OF COMEDY AND TASTE IS IMPECCABLE, is family guy always that vulgar/tasteless/tedious/boring/unfunny/what-fucking-ever?

In-jokes by themselves are pretty lame attempts at humor. They're easy to do, we're not talking about high levels of Oscar Wilde wit. The problem with the Internet is there's no feedback. This guy thinks his joke is probably hilarious, is there a better way to tell him that he's just annoying? We're not talking about using the joke a few times or making a few non-funny jabs but 16 times. The visual cues we use to tell others are breaking social norms are not available in this medium. Do you guys have a better way of conveying it?

What geoff said. It is not like I want to post a whiny complaint here -- this is my first in four years -- but I didn't know what else to do. He doesn't have email in his profile.

I just don't find Simpsons jokes or "1.2 ??? 3 profit" or "Metafilter: blah blah blah" interesting or funny at all. I just don't why something which has been posted a hundred times before is funny or clever. Don't people realize cliches are tedious to read?

And as for all the people called me anal, please remember I am complaining about someone who has posted the same "joke" sixteen times in a row. To me that is utterly bizarre, almost OCD-level anal behaviour. And I imagine he will keep doing it until someone else tells him to shut up.

I should add, when has it become so taboo to discuss proper? It seems as the result of a few feuds that only involve a limited number of people Metafilter users have become jaded to these so-called call outs. Maintaining a certain level of maturity by avoiding cliche jokes and discouraging the attention-grabbing behavior associated with sites like Slashdot makes Metafilter better. We're not talking about just a poor joke but an amount of repitition that's like the annoying in class who makes the lame jokes but no one understands why. In the class you nudge the kid and go, "Dude, we get it." See we're just nudging the user, not recreating a passion play.

Of course upon rereading my comment, I can't believe I've written so much on this stupid joke.
