Five dollars to post comments?!? "Bugger that for a pound of tomatoes."
I find this prostitution of abstract concepts to be most perverse.
Now if he'd bugger a pound of tomatos for the knowledge of what MeFi membership costs, that would be Family Values.

I would certainly bugger $5 for comments for a pound of San Marzano tomatoes.

But everybody knows that MetaFilter members are NOT epopts. Or epcots. Or poptarts.
Besides, do you mean to tell me the old Bifurcated Riveter is the ONLY Old Skool blogger who didn't sign up for MeFi five years ago? Talk about 'you snooz you looz'!
And yes, I know Edison didn't invent the light bulb, he just invented the first light bulb that didn't burn itself out after 3 seconds... So?

Lets take a look at the economics of this.
The cheapest I can buy tomatoes for is 3 pounds for £1 "down the market". A pound of tomatoes therefore costs me 30 pence. Metafilter membership costs $5, which at current rates of exchange is £2.83.
So on a pure economic grounds he's certainly better off buggering a pound of tomatoes, though I'm not sure how this would help him rectify the common misapprehension that Edison invented the lightbulb.
On preview.
I now see that Matt will let him in for free, which is good news because hopefully he'll clear up the Edison thing once and for all, though I will admit to having certain reservations about admitting a tomato buggerer into the Metafilter community.

You would think that, with an admitted fishfucker in the ranks, the vegan crowd would be ecstatic for a little tomato buggery.

I think he should be given a free membership only on the condition that he take the username tomatobuggerer.

I hear Bush wants to pass an anti-vegi-sexual relations bill. It "would threaten family values". How many broken homes have happened because of a little innocent tomato buggery?
it all stems from Bush Sr.'s unrelenting hatred of broccoli.
Bush Jr, was heard to mutter, "they tried to molest my daddy".

I really hate to be negative about this, but why? He's already said he doesn't think MetaFilter is worth $5.
Don't get me wrong, I like Bifurcated Rivets (or used to, when I remembered to look at it), but I really don't think this is fair on the thousands of people that, presumably, aren't cool enough to get in for free but have at least demonstrated that they think it is worth the money.

"You can get an account for free if you prove your worth by posting cool links every day for years" is setting the bar pretty high, I think.

Guys, come on. He's not buggering tomatoes. He's buggering "$5 for comments," in return for a pound of tomatoes. In short, he is a moneyfucking tomato whore. I hope this helps.
Woops, there's my pager. Gotta go slurp some brains.

I'm just guessing, but: because mathowie thinks he's worth waiving the $5 requirement? It works out pretty well. Person A doesn't think joining is worth paying 5 dollars. Person B thinks Person A is worth waiving $5 requirement. Person B waives requirement. Person A joins. Person A is now happy, not having paid $5. Person B is now happy, having person A.
So, provided that Monsieur Rivets joins, persons A and B are happy. And, presumably, the other folks who think joining is worth $5 are also happy, because they paid what they think is appropriate in order to join, and have gotten their money's worth. And the handful of people who are angry at lottery winners or folks who find leftover change in vending machine change slots will be up in arms about how unfair life is and how nothing nice should happen to anyone unless it happens to everyone.
