Stop the Violence

I've noticed an uptick in the number of comments I see that express the desire to see violence done to someone, whether from face-punches or guillotines. I know that the general MeFite psyche is bruised and battered after an exhausting 16 months since the election, but these types of comments leave me feeling like the only place I know on the internet with sane discourse is losing its way. I'd like to remind people that though their violent fantasies may feel justified, they are still troubling for others to read.

Can't we have nice (fake) things?

This isn't a call out at all, I just wanted to let people know how I'm affected and see if others have had the same difficulty. I'm pretty sure my executive function isn't as great as it could be... but I REALLY struggle when people are telling backstories and asking for advice and use letters instead of fake names to anonymise the people they're discussing. Eg X said to Y they failed to post the letter but Y had given it to B on the way to C and D’s house because Z was in Hobart . Easier for me : Patrick said to Tim he’d failed to post the letter but Tim had given it to Trinh on the way to Rachel and Krista’s house because Bronwyn was in Hobart. May I suggest that it's a lot easier for us to follow who the actors are if you give fake names? I'd like to ask people to consider using entire names, or nouns or something other than letters. It's super hard to follow. Even on a professional white background. ;-) [more inside]

Let's talk about spoilers, again.

Last night there was a Last Jedi post in the frontpage with spoilers above the fold. The post got deleted due to self linking but the fact remains that many comments inside were dismissive of the spoilers even though the digital download was out just yesterday. What should be the guidelines for this kind of thing? Are general spoilers above the fold OK after three months after the release? Should all spoilers go below the fold?

The etiquette of thread poaching?

Question about thread poaching to external sites. I totally get that everything on MeFi is publicly accessible to anyone and everyone for ever and always. But, I was somewhat annoyed that one of my questions was made into an article on LifeHacker. They did credit it to MeFi, but it still seemed like a cheap thing for them to do (and presumably make money off of). Or at the least, poor netiquette? (Do people even say that anymore?) If I'm being a grumpy old dinosaur, do let me know. Just wondering if there's a precedent for this, and to hear others thoughts on the matter.

People vs Garbage

The phrase "garbage people" or the habit of describing people as "garbage" or as "trash" seems to be making a resurgence on my social media lately. I've seen it on metafilter, too, recently, and... can we not do that here, please? [more inside]

Long comment is longish

This comment resulted in the this mod comment asking posters to use paste bin for "super long comments" as an aid to mobile users. I don't think we should be encouraging original content to be hosted on some platform not under the Metafilter sphere of influence. Bit rot is problematic enough within post linkage. [more inside]

Fanfare Etiquette Issue

I don't want to be the one posting this thread, and that's a problem. [more inside]

Bruce H. passed away

My brother and long time user "Bruce H." passed away at his home on 6 January, 2018 and asked me to let folks know so that his contacts would not be left wondering "whatever became of Bruce H.?" He was as the oldest son in a very large family and we all miss him dearly. Thank you all - Kerstin

You don't need to tell us that you're not abusing the edit window. Just make the additional comment and say what you wanted to say. [more inside]

Can we not use gendered insults?

I really think the word bitch is problematic and highly offensive and adds nothing to the inclusivity here. This may be an antipodean thing but it’s a sexist and nasty insult. May I request we discuss not using it? Or any gendered insults?
