Tagging functions updated July 12, 2005 10:52 PM Subscribe
I changed the way tags are done on mefi. You can now delete your tags and make new ones on your posts. If this works out, I'll extend it to let you tag your mutal contacts as well (and I'll copy the functionality to ask mefi as well). Let me know if you run into any problems. Also, me and jessamyn can add and delete tags on any post and will use this to help keep things organized.
Oh, javascript is enabled and the JS console says, "toggleLayer is not defined".

Actually one other thing I've noticed. With those tags appearing in a box on the top right of the page, the width of text on the page has been reduced by about a 1/4. Meaning that one needs to scroll a hell of a lot further through threads that have lots of comments.

Thank you so much for this! I had a misspelled tag on one of my threads and it was driving me NUTS. .

You get a blank page when adding? Have you tweaked firefox so that it doesn't allow redirects? Maybe some sort of ad blocker or something?
It works fine in my firefox 1.0.4.

I tweaked the layout slightly so that the margin doesn't push text flow and cause more scrolling.

Both flashblock and metafilthy.

Wow. I don't mind additional tags but I hope you don't delete tags to "keep things organized" cos, Matt -- I noticed at Flickr that you tags things really weirdly :P

Actually, I wonder if it is stumbleupon that is interfering - after clearing javascript console error messages and attempting to add tag, I get the same as error JS message Gyan has noted plus 2 errors for stumbleupon (content debug&modules). Oh well, no biggy.

so does this mean we will be able to tag contacts using any adjective we like? or will there be "editorial decisions"?

I'm getting a blank page popup on both IE6 and Moz1.7.1 (old Moz - can't upgrade it on this, my work computer)
when I first tried I saw the tags listed on the right with a box and a button that read "add a tag" which seemed to work - upon refresh I see the tags and a link to "add a tag" - the link gives me the blank popup.

Matt, on the serious tip, though, I just noticed that, in deleted threads like this one, the "Tags" box forces the reason-for-deletion box to wrap around in an awkward way.
I'm using Firefox 1.0.4 on Win2K. Changing text size fixes it, obviously, but FYI.

If "reason" is "display:block; margin:0 150px 0 70px;" you're home free though.

I'm making the archives more useful for everyone by adding keywords that lets them find your posts easier. So if you make a post by Iraq, but for whatever reason you feel the need to avoid this feature, no one will ever find it in a tag search for "Iraq".
Did you want people to find your posts, or not? Why does it matter to you? You sound like an author complaining about a librarian putting your book on a shelf with a dewey decimal number instead of leaving it in a pile somewhere in the library.

Leave editorial decisions to the original posters.
Tags are not editorial decisions, and it's not very useful when posters use them as such. They are finding aids. Please make the tags as helpful as possible. If Matt wants to change the tags on my old posts, it's okay by me.

It's like an internet karma thing. I'd bet better than 50% of grammer/spelling corrections contain their own error.
I was a little uncomfortable with Matt adding tags to my posts but his Dewey Decimal analogy makes sense.
