Perhaps fff is referring to the "# members" on the front page, which currently stands at 24,938 (or so).

If so, it has been noted before that the # is off by a whole bunch, as Francophone and jamesonandwater (and many others) can attest.

So, what are we here for, then?

Damn, this means that user #25,437 is coming up soon. If I've read my Nostradamus quatrains correctly, that means there's going to be a bunch of petty MeTa minutia followed by a longtime MeFite very publicly leaving the site for good. Or maybe it means a "great land" is going to get a lot of rain. I'm not sure which, these quatrains are very hard to translate.

commish! I always knew you were cool, but I could never figure out why. It's because of your proximity to the root number of all user goodness, the beginning of the majestic epoch that was 14K. Although some people would claim that the 14K generation really started a little earlier.

I'm not sure what the point of this thread is, but just in case I vote to keep new registration open. Not so much because #1 deserves the money, which he does, but because the discussion is still dominated by a handful of loudmouths with an ever dwindling supply of something to say. Feel free to chime in, noobs, we already have enough from the ethereal blighs and jonmcs and y2karls and amberglows and etc.

Huh. What's the point of having the actual user # count being something different from MeFi's user # counter?

Anyway, seems like a milestone sort of event, in the tradition of assigning extra importance to round numbers, so I figured I'd take note.

Of course, this is assuming it takes little time to go from 24938 to 25000. If we're not growing by a dozen a day, then I guess it's moot.

fff, it's because every time a new user registers, a number gets allocated to them, but they don't actually get commenting rights until they've paid their 3.90 Euros (that's what I paid anyway, heh). So there are a bunch of numbers out there that remain unused indefinitely (they might still pay their $5).

Even before the $5 signups, the user number of the newest MeFite was higher than the user count of the front page. A few totally deleted accounts (including 'test users' Matt used in testing the MeFiWare) accounted for that. Now get off my lawn, damn kids.
