It looks like I was posting a comment at the exact moment Matt closed the thread. Here's the error message (inside)

Routines cannot be declared more than once.
The routine "balanceTags" has been declared twice in different templates.

Please try the following:
Enable Robust Exception Information to provide greater detail about the source of errors. In the Administrator, click Debugging & Logging > Debugging Settings, and select the Robust Exception Information option.
Check the ColdFusion documentation to verify that you are using the correct syntax.
Search the Knowledge Base to find a solution to your problem.

yep, that's what happens the moment I close them. I should have a nicer error message for these rare events.

Well, it woke me right up, I'll tell you. My first thought was OMG!!! I BROKE IT!!
THIS IS WHAT THE OTHERS SAW -- JUST BEFORE CTHULHU REACHED THROUGH THEIR SCREEN AND DRAGGED THEM OFF TO ETERNAL TORMENT IN ANOTHER DIMENSION!! HOLY JUDAEO-CHRISTIAN FETISH OBJECT ON A STICK!
But, no. The thingy wasn't fazed. I guess that's why it's called "Robust."
