LA meetup proposal March 29, 2005 1:06 AM Subscribe
So I'm coming to LA between the dates of May 18-21 for E3. I would like to meet any LA Mefites if possible.
I was at E3 in 2001 - the year they unveiled X-Box, GBA and Gamecube.
It was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had. I totally geeked out. I had the opportunity to go again this year, but I turned it down, which is a shame!

I am almost certainly going to be there as well, Manos. I'd love to be part of a meetup, whether it's a larger LA-meetup or a small E3-related thing.
Quartermass, considering the Revolution, X-Box 2 (next? 360?), and the PS3 will be revealed (and there are rumors that all three will be playable), and there's a good chance we'll be getting some other surprises, like the VPocket and Mario 128 (oh god, I hope so), this year may be as big as 2001. It is a shame you turned it down.

Plutor,
we should contact each other then and try to meet up for coffee or something at E3 then (or lets see how this thread goes).
I'll keep a list of people who respond and email out about it in a month.

Don't be scared of the West Coast! We don't bite! ;)
"Three miles from Venice Beach," as you will find out, doesn't necessarily mean much out here -- everything is measured in the time it takes to drive somewhere. So the convention center (downtown) is sometimes 25 minutes from Venice Beach, and sometimes 2 hours. Are you staying downtown or elsewhere?
In any case, I'd be up for a meet-up! Let me know.

I'm up for a meet-up!
Otherwise, what Scody said about driving time vs. actual mileage...especially in westside LA.
Too bad i'm not in the industry, I'd like to go to E3...

I have no idea where I'm going to be staying (it's with a friend who's getting me in). Something tells me I'll be cabbing or hiking it a bit.
I've gotten a couple of emails as well as posts here. I tell you what, when it's about two weeks away, I'll make another post here and follow up with you guys with emails.
Just let me know a good coffee house/bar (not a coffee bar, but...I dunno, a double latte long island ice tea venti espresso might not be too bad) and I'd be happy to cab it over there. I mean....how big can LA be, right?

Heh. You really are an East Coaster, aren't you? :)
Let's put it this way -- when my mom was here helping out after I'd had surgery a few months ago, she took a cab to my sister's house to see the grandkids for an afternoon (I wasn't allowed to drive, and she didn't want to try to navigate the highways in the deluge rain we were having at the time, and my sister was on bedrest because she was 9 months pregnant.) My sister and I both live in L.A. proper, mind: I'm in Miracle Mile (roughly halfway between downtown and the Westside) and she's in Eagle Rock (northwestern corner of L.A. before it becomes Pasadena.) The cab fare was something like 65 bucks. Each way.
In any case, do post something again a couple of weeks ahead of time -- there are some cool bars downtown (the Hotel Figueroa is fun, for example) and certainly good spots all over the city in whatever neighborhood you wind up staying in, so I'm sure we'll all have lots of suggestions.

I'm a Northern Californian, but I think I'll be at E3, also. I'm not of legal drinking age, but, keep me posted on happenings.

Gah! Eagle Rock's the northeast side of the city. See, living out here even destroys your sense of direction...

I will be at E3 each day, let us all wear distinguishing shirts. Mine will be red, with an image of The Cheat from homestarrunner on it. Also, I will be carrying my PSP, which has a short but entertaining video of a masturbating walrus on it, which I will show any mefite who asks.

No, I'm serious. This is an animated gif preview of the video. Of course, it's much cooler on my PSP.

I'm tempted to buy a ticket to LA and sneak into E3 solely to see that video.

(huh, that came off hostile, what i mean to say is that if jonson is wearing a uniform, i could just skin him and be distinguished by being the person wearing the guy who has the psp video of a masturbating walrus. in any case, i'll be at e3.)

I'm in. Meetup places... would it be better to be by E3 or by where you are staying? Downtown: Hotel Figueroa is cool, or if you want to go really LA we could go rooftop at the Standard hotel for $$ drinks.
Coffeehouse... Venice is full of them. The Rose Cafe has good food, can be crowded and has pancakes. Or closer to E3, The Pantry is a downtown diner, also crowded, with pancakes as big as the plates and breakfast 24 hours a day. It's typical diner food, not fabulous but cheap!
And I can thank Plutor in person for his great Swap CD!

I'm in on one condition: I humbly ask that any meetup be held as early in the week as possible. (I'm free the 18th and 19th, but will be in Vegas that weekend.)
What about Canter's Deli in the Fairfax district? Open 24 hours, central to everything, amazing pastrami...?

Woot, the chance to meet a fellow swapper, in person!
I will be there, although I am sans-PSP (and, sadly, sans-DS). I'm considering bringing my Gamecube and GBA with Four Swords and/or Mario Party 3+6i, and getting all my cow-orkers to bring their GBAs as well. That would be some fun drunken post-E3 hotel-room yelling.
Can I trust the airlines with my precious, though?

It's stuff like this that makes me wish I were still in the game industry. There aren't a lot of animal masturbating videos in the button-down corporate world. At least, none I've been able to find.
I'll second Canter's. Mmm...kishkes and egg creams...
In case you're still reading this, Manos, if you haven't nailed down accomodations, I'd recommend staying anywhere near an MTA light rail line. I used to use it to get to E3; the Blue Line stops a few blocks away from the Convention Center, and it'll help you avoid a lot of parking/traffic headaches. Go for Pasadena or the South Bay (Manhattan, Redondo, El Segundo, hell even by LAX) for the Green Line.

I've never, ever been to the west coast...and to be honest, I'm a little imtimidated (I'm a devout East Coast boy) however I'm sinking the bullet and coming.
And since Mefi is dear to me, I'd love to meet some of it's west coast folks. If you are interested in meeting up, my email is in my profile and I'd love to figure out a time if at all possible. I am supposedly going to be three miles from Venice Beach...whatever that means.
