is there any chance of getting a feature similar to the "Best Of"? January 5, 2005 11:00 AM Subscribe
Not to be all like Craigslist or anything but is there any chance of getting a feature similar to the "Best Of"? (More inside)
Use the wiki.

Ah yes, Los Wiki. Is this updated frequently? Not being snarky, I just don't know.
Despite the growing pains, there have been some truly awesome posts lately (in the past too). Rather than having to call attention to them here, it'd be nice to have a link from the main page to a list of those posts that were voted "Best Of".

I'd like a non Wiki best of.

When you say 'best,' are you thinking of the actual FPP or of the ensuing discussion? To me, most links' value plummets after I read it, unless it's something super useful like to a page full of great freeware or something. Then I bookmark it.
If you're thinking of the discussion, I think this is definitely something to be handled offsite. I'd hate for people to care even more about creating a provocative discussion, when making an FPP, than they already do. I think it should be all about the links, here.
Also, we could do something like this in MeTa each year, and put links to them on the wiki.

Wow, rereading the thread I just linked to, what's with all the goodwill? Where are the snarks? I hardly recognize us.

I think selecting an exemplary front-page post or thread each week and highlighting it on the main page is a good idea. The problem with doing this on the Wiki is that no one reads it.

Good question. A combination of both. Yeah, pretty subjective as to what that could be but there are some posts/threads that, taken as a whole, are pretty sweet ie., funny, thought-provoking, educational.

scarabic's response in that thread sums it up for me. I would like topic flags, but it's already supposed to be the best of the web.

That Wiki page is more like a Hall of Fame, not a periodic "best of." Some of the threads listed seem to be there because they contain great in-joke value, not necessarily because they're the most interesting / readable to the outside world. Plus, it's only got like 10 threads, which is pretty much an insult, considering all the great stuff that's here.
I think MetaFilter remixed deserves a big fat nod over the Wiki page.

At Remixed, only 1 post from 2004 has 3 or more votes, and only 6 with 2 votes. Out of 7300 posts at Mefi in 2004(365 x avg. 20), I think atleast 500 more could be accomodated. People ought to start remixing more.

On the remix page, it says "drag the bookmarklet below to your links bar in IE". I've tried that and the bookmarklet, it does not drag. Is there a setting in the bowels of the IE Tools menu that needs to be set in order to drag links like that? It's happened (or rather, not happened) to be before.

Incidentally, I know what my nomination would be for Best of MeTa... hint: Starts with "Alex" and ends with "ClusterF---k"
