Where's Amberglow? August 8, 2004 9:42 AM   Subscribe

Where's Amberglow? I was supposed to meet him yesterday before the NYC meetup. Last I heard from him (12.30) he was gonna come. Then he didn't show up for either our thing or the meetup. So that's 24 hours now, and I'm getting a little worried. Is there anyone out there who has a number and can check on him?

Maybe he joined the Marines.

Thanks CL. I would just feel really bad if he were found tied up in some Midtown basement four weeks from now. Or Gitmo. I'm sure the Repubs are starting to clean up now that the convention is on its way.

Of course. I was just worried, especially since word on the street indicates you had never missed a meet-up. I figured you were fine, but if you had ended up in Gitmo without one of us even looking for you, well, I wouldd have felt very guilty.

Happy endings all around.

I have pics, I'm making the gallery as we speak, everything went great, amberglow buddy you were missed, but somehow we soldiered on into the dark and beautiful Bohemian night.

Sorry. I spent the day at Coney Island. I have a very nice tan and my brains are baked.

A solid meetup as these things go: an awful lot of sausage was consumed, as were literally dozens of pitchers of Spaten, an appearance by Ed Helms, and more (and prettier!) shoutouts than could fit anywhere (though if you're reading this and wondering: we probably forgot about you. Just warning you).

I just wish I hadn't had to leave at an absurdly early hour to get back home before midnight. All of you who missed it, shame on you. Oh, and if we get back to Bohemian Hall, I highly recommend the breaded cutlets (unless you want to wind up like jonmc and Pips).

Well, let me sit right down and tell you Astoria...
posted by jonmc at 6:15 AM on August 10, 2004

OK, if we're getting technical, Astoria is historically just the bit south of Astoria Park, with some decaying 19th-century houses and ugly new apartments. In current use, I'd say it goes all the way south at least to Broadway, but the Post Office seems to consider most of it LIC. From the charming "Medieval Astoria" site (with some nice pictures):
The village of Astoria was developed in 1839 by one Stephen Halsey, aided by the creation of a Ferry station at 92nd St in Manhattan. Bits and pieces of this antebellum Astoria still exist, colonaded mansions and all - go to 12th Street between 26th Avenue and Astoria Park South to look them over.

In 1870 all of western Queens was chartered as Long Island City, an entity that lasted until it was consumed by expanding New York City in 1898.

Until the eighteenth century the area now known as Astoria was known as Hallets Cove after the Englishman  William Hallett bought 1,500 acres along the shore from the Dutch governor, Peter Stuyvesant in 1652. It was renamed in honor of the elder John Jacob Astor, who had his summer home here. (The house was where Washington Irving wrote his work on the fur tradel Astoria (online) [1836]).  Some residents wanted to call the area Sunswick, an Indian name, but Halsey persuaded them to change the the name in the hopes that Astor would donate money to the village's young ladies' seminary; he eventually sent $500.
Cheap bastard. Shoulda stuck with Sunswick.

Sunrise Mart. It's at 4 Stuyvesant Street in the East Village, on the second floor. Go past St. Mark's Books, and it's the elevator lobby next to the stairs.

You can (I believe) also get Giant Pocky at the bigger JAS Mart, which is just around the corner on St. Mark's Place. North side of the street, between 2nd and 3rd Avenues. Go in the little restaurant area, hang a left, and go downstairs.

This list may also prove useful.
