Meetup in NYC with adrober Aug. 7 2004? August 3, 2004 5:35 AM   Subscribe

adrober is moving to New York on Friday, and all that login excitement is over, so what better time to remind people of Saturday, August 7, at Bohemian Beer Hall? I guess the time will be ... a good time for beer and sausages? I know that doesn't narrow it down much. Come on in, and let us know when you will arrive.

Queens Reprazentin!

sorry, couldn't help myself.

Is said location accessible via subway or would a prospective visitor from New Jersey be obliged to bite the bullet and drive in?
posted by Karmakaze at 6:40 AM on August 3, 2004

Karmakaze - it's the very last stop on the uptown N or W. No need to drive.

(Very close to my apartment, actually, but I have company coming this weekend. Rats.)

Wow, Remy. Me too. Howdy, neighbor.

I plan on doing voter registration at the Dragon Boat Races in Corona Park that afternoon. Will this be an evening event?
posted by ursus_comiter at 7:26 AM on August 3, 2004

Remy: Next to last stop -- it's a block or so from the Astoria Blvd stop (last stop is Ditmars, my old nabe). We don't want people winding up at the Con Ed plant looking for a beer!
posted by languagehat at 7:45 AM on August 3, 2004

Actually, the next-to-last stop (Astoria Blvd.) on the N/W is a bit closer.
posted by Vidiot at 7:50 AM on August 3, 2004

D'oh!
posted by Vidiot at 7:52 AM on August 3, 2004

It's actually the second-to-last stop on the N line. (Anyone else?)

I suspect the evening is going to be better than the afternoon. The last thing we want is to be baking in the heat of the day out in the garden. (Also, I'll be coming from hockey, and I'm doing y'all the favor of not wanting to bring the funk. You're welcome.)

I'd think a 6:00 start might make some sense. It's early enough that we'll get plenty of daylight, and you still have a chance to get something else done during the day before heading out for the evening.

Oh, and it will run long. As bets go, that's pretty safe.
posted by chicobangs at 7:54 AM on August 3, 2004

I'll second the 6...but i'll probably arrive a little bit after like last time since i have no sense of time (or taste in fashion).

Anyone who wants to take the train from midtown with me is welcome to--send me an email--and get your shots beforehand and bring your passport ; >
posted by amberglow at 8:04 AM on August 3, 2004

Okay. Here are some links.

NY Citysearch's entry for the place, and they also have their own site, which has a map and directions and everything.

Amberglow? It's freakin' fifteen minutes from Bloomingdale's. You make it sound like it's, oh, Hoboken or something. ;-)
posted by Vidiot at 8:13 AM on August 3, 2004

Oi, I live in Hoboken, and this place might as well be in Montreal.

May never have a chance at a meetup again, so I will be there. I promise bling shoutouts.
When do the subways and Metro-North stop running?
posted by casarkos at 8:25 AM on August 3, 2004

Metro-North tends to stop running at around 1am, but it's best to check their site. Subways are 24 hours, but less frequent late at night.

C'mon. It's just two rivers, people, not the other side of the moon. Come experience for yourself the inherent wonderfulness of a beer garden in New York City with Czech beer on tap.
posted by Vidiot at 8:29 AM on August 3, 2004

Jeezus, adam. How the hell are we gonna keep corrupting you if you don't even show up?

Seriously. Leave the kid in the car with the windows cracked. We'll do shifts of checking in on the little monster. Everybody wins.
posted by chicobangs at 8:33 AM on August 3, 2004

Naw. Bring him inside. There's space to run around, and we can get him started early. They probably have half-pints.
posted by Vidiot at 8:37 AM on August 3, 2004

My apologies about the subway thing; Mapquest shows them about equidistant but their website does recommend the Astoria Blvd. stop.

Wish I could make it, I've heard so many good things about the place but haven't had a chance to get there yet. Sigh.

Vidiot: I lived in Astoria years ago--i was kidding. Jeez--You bridge-and-tunnel people are so touchy. ; >
posted by amberglow at 9:17 AM on August 3, 2004

oh, do they have an air-conditioned inside part if it's as muggy as today?
posted by amberglow at 9:19 AM on August 3, 2004

I have taken note of the meet-up, and will try to stop in for a drink. Anyway, I couldn't help notice that Bohemian Beer Hall was coincidentally featured in this past Sunday's New York Times What's Doing (in New York) Section...under "Sightseeing".

Here's the blurb:

"Venture into Queens to see an authentic beer garden, a great place to spend a sunny afternoon. The Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden, at 29-19 24th Avenue in Astoria, (718) 274-4925, www.bohemianhall.com, was built in 1910, when hundreds of beer gardens dotted the city, serving immigrant Czechs and Slovaks. The beer is plentiful and the food - goulash, bread dumplings, kielbasa - is just right for the setting. The owners are planning a music festival (jazz and some Czech and Slovak folk) on Aug. 22, from 3 to 9 p.m. Tickets, $7."

You guys are always one step ahead, eh?
posted by naxosaxur at 9:20 AM on August 3, 2004

Dammit, you guys always pick dates I can't make. Hope you have another one soon...

Why not just hop on PATH? You can go direct from Hoboken to 33rd Street in Manhattan, at which point it's an easy underground transfer to the yellow subway lines which will take you to the beer garden =) I'd say it would take under an hour all told.

Wish I could come and meet more of you crazy peoples, but I'll probably be out that evening myself--up in Massachusetts, meeting with family and a close friend who recently returned from 1.5 years of service in Iraq.
posted by cyrusdogstar at 9:40 AM on August 3, 2004

Yeah, I'm in Massachusetts too so I'll miss this - y'all have fun though. Hi Caitlin!

I can't make it, I have a veggie BBQ to attend. (For those snickering at the thought of veggie BBQ, just know it includes a host of Indian kebabs, and proper veggie burgers, not the soy-mushroom patties you get in the US).

We can still laugh.

Ha! Ha!

Like that.

caitlinb, thanks for the shout-out... didn't realize my arrival was so significant! I'd love to come, but my NY friends may be a little insulted if I don't see them first... I'll be sure to show at future mefi-NY outings.

bring them with you and make them buy you a round. then keep accidentally "spilling the beer" into my mouth/glass/etc and then get them to buy you another. it's a win win!
posted by Stynxno at 1:51 PM on August 3, 2004

"Spilling the beer" into Stynxno's mouth might best be done in private.

I'll be there too, though via the NYPL, so Amberglow, if you wanna meet up & talk shit on the train, drop me a line.
posted by dame at 7:44 PM on August 3, 2004

Well, I was generally out of sorts for that last little meetup, so I'd better get with this one also to atone for that. Work and meetups, they don't mix so well. Yes, that's an excuse.

Plus, I get to visit Queens. Never been.
posted by attackthetaxi at 5:52 AM on August 4, 2004

So, everyone's still thinking 6:00pm?

I'm half tempted to take up Amberglow's train offer, but that would involve locating a single person somewhere in city, which is harder than locating a group of persons at a specific bar.

Is Astoria safe?
posted by the fire you left me at 1:03 PM on August 4, 2004

Well, except for the fact that vidiot, chicobangs and I all reside there, yes, perfectly safe.

Not to mention Big Bird, Yoda, Christopher Walken, and me.

Astoria isn't safe...because *I* live there. :)

Figures, tho' -- the one time something's happening in Queens, I can't make it. Waaaa!

posted by Karmakaze at 1:07 PM on August 6, 2004

Yes, Karmakaze: 6:00 PM. And adrober, I hope you enjoy spending time with your "real" friends. On my last night in New York.

*sob*

Damn, as much as I love the beer garden (and every single one of you), I won't be able to make it. Have a Pilsner on me. Solemn promise: next time, I'll get chicobangs the beer I owe him. I also had some extra copies of "Outfoxed" to give away... bummer. Have fun, kids.
posted by muckster at 11:33 AM on August 7, 2004

So how was it? I wanna see the uncensored pictures. I'm a card carrying member of the local crew!
posted by riffola at 9:43 AM on August 8, 2004

Apologies that I never made it...I was running extremely late, and then had to choose between Astoria & the Village. The Village overruled, as it was my friend's 35th b-day party, and my girls held me hostage. I hope libations were imbibed by all?
