Echo Project is mislabeld as "metafilter related"? July 13, 2003 2:15 AM Subscribe
Think the only thing "MetaFilter-related" about The Echo Project is that it's a reason for Dave Winer to have another FPP-level hissy fit? Well, since copyright conflicts won't allow the developers behind "Echo" to call it "Echo", they're putting out a call for alternate names, and one of the most popular proposals so far is MetaPub. Is this infringement on the MetaFilter name? Will this cause future confusion among the already easily confused? Is this something that this Meta Community should take a stand on?
BTW, other popular names: Necho (as in Not Echo), Spark and Lokahi (obscure Hawaiian term). A couple folks are also pushing MetaVox.

Why don't they call it pancakes? Everyone likes pancakes. I like pancakes.
Or Pie, Pie sounds good as well.
Hmm, me hungry now.

MetaPub is a dumb name for the technology, but I'm really not the type of person to ever tell someone they're "infringing" on MetaFilter, unless they're copying it whole hog.

This is just silly. Meta is a common prefix , metadata, metatag, metaphysics, etc. Sure, it's a dumb name in the context of (n)Echo but MeFi certainly has no claim on it.
Myself, I think it should be called Curry.

Yes, Matt invented the word "Meta"... Ya-huh...
The only way it'd infringe on this site is if "MetaPub" was host to semi-amusing near-anarchy with a penchant for big words and epic prose.
And I think we've got a monopoly on that.

"Pie" was actually one of the first names proposed. I think the idea was that the new format should be "easy as pie". I'm not sure why they don't like it; I think it's the best name yet.

Necho should stay. It's already caught on as the new name. Trying to change it now will result in fragmentation. Necho also works as 'new Echo', and someone just registered necho.org a few days ago, so I guess someone has plans..

Sounds like the name of a pretentious noomeeja magazine to me. Y'know, the type of magazines that mention A-list bloggers and weblog related projects.

I am currently applying for all variations of domain names based on all possible combinations of all words listed in Liddell and Scott's English-Greek Lexicon (yes, that Liddell), including prefixes like meta- and (my personal favorite) cata-. I foresee a boom in cata- and syn- based domain names as paradigms shift. Look for a minor market to develop in -plexis and -strophe as well.
