a movie review on MeFi? May 25, 2003 10:51 PM Subscribe
Even if you are a not a real mefi "purist" (and I am an admitted newsfilter violator) is this site really for posting a movie review?
why not? if the topic sparks an educated discussion, what's wrong with that.
When I go to metafiler, I either go to find some new amazing link on some far out topic that i've never been introduced to before or find a post that refers to my interests so that I could read other's opinions, compare them with my own, and at times join in on the discussion.
My link was created in the hopes of creating a platform for the latter.

It'll get deleted, but I don't think the post was as bad as people are making it out to be. So one guy thought that a conversation about an unbelievably popular movie that has a large geek fanbase would be interesting. So what?
Don't like it? Offended by it? Then don't read it or participate in the thread. Its really that simple.
Complaint comments are only good for derailing the thread and making sure that the conversation won't go anywhere.

yes, in this case, it is.
So the person who posted the movie review is pro-movie review posts? On a related note, my cat's breath smells like cat food.
Maybe I'm crazy, and thankfully this is far from being my decision, but I just don't see how a review about a movie that EVERYONE on metafilter is conscious of is something unique or really within the guidelines of an FPP. I am pretty new here, and am not trying to claim any sort of authority, so feel free to correct.

Why not chill out and let everyone say their piece? No need to pounce on yevge.

I'd like to see what my fellow MeFites think, but I'm torn it's not like there aren't TONS of reviews out there already for this quite high-profile flick. But I'm avoiding the thread because I haven't seen it yet (and won't have a chance for a week-plus) and really don't want to run into a spoiler.

It's been said a billion times, but "Don't like it? Then don't read it" runs contrary to "self policing." If there are no standards, then this place becomes Fark, etc. There has to be a better solution than just ignoring duplicate/inappropriate/etc posts.

I'm chillin'. I was just pointing out that we all probably knew how he would feel. I think I was polite, especially seeing as how I do not know how to communicate without sarcasm and Simpson's references.

Hmmmm. That explains it
I was wondering how long it would take for the thread to end up here. Movie reviews are not really what MeFi is for, although you can hardly tell lately.

Yes, the post did seem a bit pointless, and offered nothing new other Matrix posts haven't covered. But, c'mon, live and let live. If it's truly crap, it won't be there long anyway. What bsort said, basically. This meta post is equally unnecessary and offers nothing other meta's haven't covered in the past. Did it really need to be dragged here again?

if the topic sparks an educated discussion
Well, it didn't, did it?
Discussion has centered around whether this is the place for such a post. I would argue that if anything, it's the wrong time. The morning after the release would have been all right. But at this point, the post is just harping on what every publication in the whole world has been harping on for 10 days. Please.
I'm not gonna rip anyone a new orifice over it, but if all posts were like this, or a large number like this crept through, I'd stop seeing this site as a "filter" of any kind. I think it's fine to shout down worthless posts. That's filtering in action.
It's best done nicely, I suppose. Or something.

See, at least the meta discussion about the post is here rather than in the thread itself. After all, that's what MeTa is for, right?
Personally, my dream is to see all "this post sucks and here's why" comments posted to MeTa rather than polluting the MeFi threads.

You guys are hilarious. I've made so many front page posts that do absolutely nothing that I don't think I can make one ever again that will fully satisfy me at risk of not satisfying others. (They get three comments at most I swear. Selective memory and all that)
I just saw the movie. Liked it. In fact, I think it is much deeper than many give it credit. Stilted this and that of course. But what did you expect?

quonsar,
it's a good movie. I know you must have downloaded it already, but go see it on the big screen -- the Trinity chase sequence deserves it
it's money well spent. also, Larry Wachowski has a tough alimony situation, he needs your support

Jack Valenti had something to do with the movie rating system we have now. Those of us who are old farts remember the days before movies were rated.

Do old farts smell better or worse than young farts? Or what about farts in the shower? Farts when you haven't eaten all day? Beer farts? Straight farts? Queer farts? Art farts? Part farts? Tart farts? Enquiring minds need to know.

Something is definitely wrong here. I have posted about farts on two different forums in the last fifteen minutes. At least on the other forum I can blame it on somebody else.
To answer your question: a fart by any other name still doesn't smell like roses.

Jonson, I'd be interested to know what you feel about the appropriateness Matrix post. Whilst I read it without strong feelings, it did strike me that your post the same day regarding Eddie Izzard was in a very similar vein indeed. Not a criticism mind, merely an observation... IMHO, self policing is the best solution that we have but it's always going to be difficult achieving consensus amongst ~17k souls.
