Yeah, I'll second that. Though my browser of choice is probably obscure enough to be completely irrelevant: Opera 7.11 under SuSe Linux, baby.

damn, kaibutsu, matt went to a lot of work to ensure mefi wouldn't work with Opera 7.11 under SuSe Linux Baby.

I don't think it's a browser-compatibility problem. I tried it in four different OS X browsers and got the same error in each.

I'm getting the error, too, in IE 5.2.2 Mac. (X)

As long as we're on the subject of errors, when I click on "view daily stats" in the ad system, I get an error as well:

"Error Occurred While Processing Request
The chart could not be generated due to an error in the graphing engine.

The error occurred in C:\metafilter sites\www.metafilter.com\adsystem\log_report.cfm: line 218"

Happy Sunday!

How would a Cold Fusion error ever have anything to do with the browser or platform you're viewing the site with, anyway?

It's a server-side error, and I fixed it. Sometimes in archived threads someone that posted bad html will break the static file rendering function, because the malformed or fake html will trick ColdFusion into thinking it is a CF tag.

Sunspots? Cosmic rays? Voodoo?

i object to the use of the unflattering terms "malformed" and "broken". from here on out please use the more correct "form-challenged" or "intact-deprived". thank you.

Well, I guess when code responds to your browser or platform, eg. browser detection, or setting cookies in a way that the browser doesn't understand so later on a buggy bit of code could crash if relying on it. About 6 months ago I was testing a site in Netscape 4, which doesn't like unurlencoded links, so when following a link it would pass the first bit of the GET but not the rest, causing an error. Netscape 4, like the sea, is a harsh mistress.

I'm sure you'll all buy Joe Clark's book (the unfortunate cover) to read about the term "mentally challenged" because I wrote this. And this. Right?

Then don't go to that thread. Wokka, wokka, wokka.

Ah, I see. CF can produce platform dependent errors when you write bad code. :-)

And that cover. What were they thinking?

When I was young I thought that mailboxes with "no circulars" meant you weren't allowed turning around in their driveway. I would yell at my dad when he did, fearing an edgy unshaven guy in a robe rushing out of the house.

Like the cover, I put it down to ignorance.
