Music entering blogs May 1, 2003 1:18 PM   Subscribe

i think there is a i-make-music meme slowly injecting itself into the normal DNA of blogs, spreading out from Here. Ken Layne and Derek have both recently posted old old songs as mp3's. Anyone else notice this? And is everyone recording new stuff to post? i hope so.

is everyone recording new stuff to post?

I may be out of line in posting this here, but not sure what else to do:

When Matt first set up Metafilter Music two and a half weeks ago, I emailed him a link to 5 songs and song descriptions as he'd asked people to do, and didn't hear back. Emailed again after five days and asked nicely what sort of "turnaround" there would be before the songs were posted. Matt responded and said he'd missed the email and to send the links again. Which I did. That was almost two weeks ago.

Like I said, not sure what else to do. I'm sure it's hardly a high priority for him, yet he seemed to be encouraging folks to submit their music at the time. Any ideas? Has he been out of town? I'm really not trying to grouse, I just thought it was mysterious.

blogging tools lowers the bar of entry into personal web sites +
broadband lowers the bar on transferring files several mg large +
most people blogging are tech oriented geeks +
most tech oriented geeks I've ever known have a guitar and/or decks...

yup, makes perfect sense. Expect lots of short films in five years.

more non-grousing: I also have two mefi music remixes ready to go for a while. I figured, um, I would just post 'em to my tunes blog if they didn't show up here soon.

as well as lowering the bar of entry...i think blogs sort of enhance ego, or confidence levels, etc...allowing people to share a bit more perhaps.

and maybe where a comment might draw criticism, i doubt people would go out of there way to--i hope not--email me and tell me my guitar playing sucks or something. Some strange respect for [amateur] creative effort? Makes it easier to share.

<selflink>Though not a blog, we post songs as we write and demo them on our band's web site .<selflink>

unless, you know, you didn't support the troops or something...

I actually love insightful, honest criticism.

It would be awfully cool if more song-blogging spread around the 'net ... for the two and a half years i've been operating a blog i'm the only one i've ever seen who features semi-regular original song content. However, i haven't stumbled upon any new brethren as of late. So, like i essentially said in the last thread about this: The More the Merrier!

Meanwhile, am i the only one with a serious hankering for some system of interaction for MeMu? It's not as if i expected to receive hundreds of emails after i posted my songs, but i'm sure *someone* listened to them, and i'm definitely interested in what they thought. It would be nice to have some sort of existing channel to discuss things in, short of making a new MeTa thread every time i find a song that i like. Or, am still i the only one on the internet with a jonesing to have a not-entirely-tech-headed online songwriting forum other than Songfight and y6^3's apparently stalled project?

I blame Scott Andrew.

sorry dhoyt, I've been doing the music stuff by hand and when things got busy I let the stuff fall through the cracks. I'll get to them this weekend.

Sorry about the delay.

No problem, Mr Owie. Just making sure the project was still on. Thanks...

krisis - "It's not as if i expected to receive hundreds of emails after i posted my songs"

You know, if you included your e-mail address in your member profile or your mp3 page, you'd probably be more likely to get those e-mails. :-) I'm (very slowly) trying to get feedback e-mails to the people whose songs I've been listening to. Get me an e-mail address, and you'll be on that list.

Of course, I haven't gotten any feedback on my songs either. Hopefully ybybyb's project will come to fruition, and it'll be easier for people to provide commentary.

There's the homerecording.com bbs and of course rec.music.makers.songwriting.

I've looked for songwriting discussion boards and IRC channels, but I've never really found anything I love. I'm really excited to see where this Metafilter music thing goes.

Music blogs are a great idea (I had one once myself, then shelved it when I switched servers). The only thing better than hitting a website and finding fresh new links daily, is hitting a website and finding fresh new music (daily? if only...). Metempsychosis has been a fave of mine for a while, although they used to be more blog-like. Since the demise of mp3.com as any kind of sensible, usable directory of free music, maybe mp3-blogs are the way of the future.

well this is kind of fortuitous so what the hell: three years ago I used to upload songs with a virtual band called The Blotter Bros. to Acid Planet -- after years of not uploading they just happen to be featuring us "48 hours with the Blotter Bros."

You'll get plenty of feedback there -- most it makes mefi look like the Oxford debating society.

I've been enjoying playing around with garageband.com for the past couple months.

Sorry to derail, but if anyone has short films right now, and needs free web space to host them on, you can drop me a line any time. Bear in mind that I'm not always the quickest to reply.

"and y6^3's apparently stalled project?"

Ack. Sorry. Been way too busy. A security flaw proved very tough to fix. Then had to fly to Idaho to help the folks move. Then a big work project got dumped on me (which is good actually).

I'll package it up today and send it to Matt. For what it's worth.

You're a gem, y6. Didn't mean to make it seem like you had slouched on the the awesome voluntary job you were doing. I look forward to seeing (and using) the results.

And, for all of my rabid fans (tdismukes), my email can now be found in my profile. I didn't even realize i hadn't checked that happy little box thank you for the heads up.
