What did you first see on Metafilter that is now a permanant part of your life? April 29, 2003 6:52 PM Subscribe
I was listening to Ode To Billy Joe today on a mix in my car and this afternoon I wrote a journal entry in my moleskin notebook. What's the point? These are two things I learned about on Metafilter and that are now part of my life. What did you first see on Metafilter that is now a permanant part of your life?
A lotta people who I now consider freinds.
Hi. You know who you are.

What jon said but also ultramegachomps of bookmarks; basic HTML; a leftwing streak; the art of snarking, a scar or two and a greater familiarity with colloquial American English. Otherwise, zilch. ;)

Moleskines for me as well. And then I got a friend and both parents hooked on them shortly thereafter.

More bookmarks than I can possibly visit in my lifetime, a wary appreciation of deep-fried Mars bars, some cool music, some friends, the deep desire to get a blog of my own, way too many in-jokes, and of course the crisp new $100 bill that Quonsar sends me weekly.

Godawful thick-ass fucking calluses all over my face, lips and fingers.
And yes, like vito90, being a better writer. I'm much better able to hone my "strengths" now. Especially as an author of fiction, it is much easier to impute real personality traits onto the tell-tale textual dialogue, as these are the presuppositions of fiction itself anyhow.
At least for me.

Tons of friends, and at least a friend or two for life. #mefi definitely helped shrink MeFi down more.

The Simpsons.
No, really. I watched an episode or two during its first year, was unimpressed, and never dipped a toe into it again. Then I hit MeFi, and it's all Simpsons references. I mean, all Simpsons references, the whole damn vocabulary of the place. Except for the vibrating stuff. And the pancakes.
So, I started watching reruns. Damn, this show's pretty good!
You may now all point at me and laugh.

Miguel Cardoso?
And more things than I can remember. Thankfully I have them all saved in a database. Searchable by keyword, domain, or title. Seriously. All 1176 of them. MetaFilter rocks.
Though this MeTa topic sucks.
"I like air. Does anyone else like air? What sort of air do folks here like? How does air impact your enjoyment of MetaFilrer?"
[insert long-ass snark]

I've been doing this too long huh?

I came to Mefi to ask for Courage!
Courage! What makes a king out of a slave? Courage!
What makes the flag on the mast to wave? Courage!
What makes the elephant charge his tusk in the misty mist, or the dusky dusk?
What makes the muskrat guard his musk? Courage!
What makes the sphinx the seventh wonder? Courage!
What makes the dawn come up like thunder? Courage!
What makes the Hottentot so hot? What puts the "ape" in apricot?
COURAGE!
And I got it!

Not really. I just wish you'd actually post more of the things you'd like to see (of which there seem to be innumerable examples like techie posts or fabulous software upgrades or changes in the biz, which seem to be your forte), thereby setting an example of excellent posts rather than booing from the bleachers.
The hatred and "loathing" is a complete waste of time, my good man.

Ehh, the constantly cynical, condescending snarky Mefite routine is a tried and true, if overused, overabused, musty and old, schtick. But I guess someone has to do it ("someone" being any number of proudly jaded "old-timers.")

This'll make you laugh, adrober: I've just called a cab to go buy myself a sizeable chunk of the Moleskine range, after having resisted till now. But then I made the mistake of re-reading that damn thread.
Hey, if MetaFilter opened an advertising agency, we'd all be rich within months. Months! ;)

through metafilter, waxy, through a waxpancake post, easynews, through easynews, more music than you can shake a goddamn stick at and instant street cred.
"oh that band? yeah, i've heard of them. they're ok. what? no, i had their album like two months ago"
ok, so I had giganews for at least a couple months or so beforehand, but easynews made things, uh, easier.

Get your own #$&! blog!
I heard it first here, and now today I saw an ad (for Tripod) over at TVGuide Online that said Get your own Blog! (Um, I was just checking if Scrubs is on tomorrow.)
Tripod ad people been reading Mefi, or was it a catchphrase before that?

I agree that #mefi is one of the best things to come out of MeFi, as it has enabled a bunch of us to get to know one another better and realise that we are more alike than apart in many areas, which was nice in a scary sort of way. Apart from that, a desire to create my own half-arsed web site, a sensation of "coming home" every time I visit MeFi and a focus for my up-to-now random wanderings on the intarweb. Now I understand what it is for.

It took from me the desire to surf the web. I rarely stray more than one or two links away from Metafilter. I suppose it's the same for many people.
