We adopted a kitty on Friday! I am vibrating with excitement every time I remember there is a new beast in my house. Unfortunately he is being very shy and living under the bed in our basement guest room, but he’ll come around. He was purring and making biscuits after just 45 minutes with him in the shelter. Hopefully once he has been to the vet this week and has had a few more days to decompress, he can be introduced to our other cat. Fingers crossed the introduction goes well, they’ve both had plenty of positive experience with other cats but you never know. Maybe they will be snuggle buddies! Or maybe they will just be regular buddies, that’s okay too.

We haven’t settled on a name yet but we are gravitating towards Momo, as in the dumpling (and a little bit as in the word for peach). Picture!

Capricorn, definitely some of our favorite hymn tunes including "Holy Manna," "Ash Grove" and "Come, Labor On." * (I'm a hymn nut/nerd.) And perhaps a piece or two that we can't play in church, like my favorite new arrangement of "Sunrise, Sunset."

* Last year an arrangement of "Come, Labor On" was commissioned in honor of my 25 years of directing. (I'm now starting my 29th year, but Covid delayed things.) Link here; click on the preview to see the dedication on the inside title page. It's the only published arrangement of this hymn tune as far as I know.

I have an actual, pourover coffee setup now! I used it to make a coffee today, and it was delicious. The grounds were 'slow motion' decaf by Counter Culture. I've been drinking instant decaf for months now, until I got bored of just having the same two taste profiles available. I got the Hario V60 setup from Japan.

Why am I psyched about a coffee setup, if I'm just brewing decaf? Two reasons:

1. I have grown to absolutely love the taste of a good quality coffee.

2. I have ADHD, and I take stimulants for it. However, my brain doesn't register as being 'awake!', unless it has some actual coffee. I know it's totally a psychological placebo effect, but I'm willing to indulge in this as long as I need to do so. And considering the world *flails arms*, it's an indulgence I happily look forward to. I've tried other non-caffeinated hot drinks, and it doesn't have the same effect.

The pourover coffee is so smooth that I just have it with a pinch of milk, and it's delicious.

I am in a new home country (researched for nearly 2 years before deciding which country to go to, then spending another year getting residency, paperwork, bank accounts, all that jazzmo) and learning more Spanish. One of the ways I'm doing this by finding beloved books in Spanish and reading them. (Discworld fans, those books have been translated into so many languages! I have all the books featuring Death.)

Last week I found El Marciano - The Martian. So far I'm only on page 32, but I'm loving it!

Bluesky gifted me this joyful reaction series on YT: Rapper’s First Time Hamilton Reaction (Part 1) and it has been helping. I say this as someone way out of his target audience, and as someone who doesn’t watch reaction videos: take the time to watch this skeptic who doesn’t even like musicals and who finds American history boring become completely invested in the story. His observations are terrific, but his face? Such a joy to see it go from doubt to surprise to tears. He just posted his reaction to the finale, which is part 17, I think. It’s a long-ass series because he pauses every 15 seconds because something has given him a lot to think about and comment on. I found it wonderful, watching him be responsive and moved and curious about what he was seeing. His connection to something new really touched me, and made me happy.

I spent today working on improving my scores in Pac-Man Championship Edition DX, and making substantive efforts in realizing a game design I've been thinking about for several years now. Balatro's success has given me more confidence in it, it's a randomized dungeon crawl game using playing cards for nearly all its randomness and game functions! I look forward to pouring energy into it instead of fretting about the news every day like I did during that guy's first wretched reign.

We ordered a new fridge to replace the one that was already old when we bought our house 15 years ago. It comes tomorrow and has a cheese drawer that cannot collapse with a loud CLUNK because it is supported by the crisper drawers beneath, which I expect will save us approximately 1.5 heart attacks per week versus the status quo. I’m a little sad knowing that this one almost certainly will not live to be 28, but my environmental policy wonk friend assures me that as long as the refrigerant is properly recycled, replacing a 1997 fridge is probably a
win on net.

The new year cards I made and sent this year were simple block prints, depicting our three cats. I used materials I had at hand: a piece of not-too-hard plastic, a Dremel and a non-rotary engraver. I bought the roller and the blockprint ink.

Now I want to get (back) into linoleum cutting so I bought a carving set, linoleum and more colours of ink. I can't wait to dig in.

I am making a hat. Isn’t there a Sondheim song about that? It’s not my first crochet project by far, but if I finish it, it’ll be the first one that’s for my own self, not a gift for someone or a project I stopped liking and didn’t finish. It’s not high-quality yarn, but it glitters, and it pleases me.

(Let’s not talk about the unfinished project that was supposed to be a Christmas gift. It ran into hand-sewing fabric, and I am worse at that than I remembered.)

I came into a reasonable sum of money in November, and I spent most of December racing around fixing some problems in my life that could be solved by throwing money at them--including hiring a neurodivergence-experienced professional organizing team to help me unfuck (declutter and organize) my house in a way that my spouse and I could reasonably maintain. It was a really productive and honestly kind of healing experience, but also exhausting. Having recovered a minute, though, it is so nice to be able to find things easily and have defined homes for all my things!

Right now I am finally untangling some really cool data I've been trying to unfuck for the last couple years, which I am very excited about.

Grumpybearbride gave me my Valentine's Day gift early: an Otamatone Deluxe. It is one of those instruments with a mouth that you squeeze to make it open and close as you press a ribbon controller to determine the pitch. It is delightful, whimsical and highly annoying. That she bought it for me shows me that she not only knows me very well, but loves me to such an extent that she is willing to put up with the sound of that thing in our house.

I love her so much!

Also: in November, I realised that the low level but annoying hand pain that had been around for months was probably arthritis. So I read up on what could be done, and it seemed like it might help to take glucosamine, which is an OTC food supplement. I started taking it daily.

After a week or two, I was definitely noticing an effect; now, at the six week mark, I can say that the pain has been halved. I consider that to be a great success.

My wife and I returned Sunday from three days in Chicago, where until 2018 we had lived for almost 30 years. Met an old friend for fondue at Geja's Cafe (est. 1965), enjoyed lunch break at Miller's Pub (est. 1935) in conjunction with a day at The Art Institute of Chicago (est. 1879), and ate farewell dinner in a fanciful booth at The Village (a/k/a "Italian Village")(est. 1927).

Also did the in-depth tour of Robie House (est.1910).

All old favorites from our past lives. Many happy old memories were recalled, new happy memories were made.

(And, yes, there was plenty of chill in Chicago during the third week of January!)

After several months of being almost completely uncreative (normally I have multiple projects and hobbies going at once, so this was odd) I had the urge to pick up a project I’d set aside a few years ago. I set it out to think about and my brain got a little tingly, like it used to. It seems like a good sign, at least on a small scale.

It’s bitterly cold here and I’ve been staying in as much as possible, but I’ve signed myself up for some volunteer work at the food pantry and tonight a neighbor has asked me over for movie night - I cannot recall the film but she tells me it’s hilarious. I’m bringing popcorn.

Finally read the fanfare thread in MeTa and that’s got me a little excited about trying to watch movies in a more thoughtful way (which I still have to figure out).

I installed a cat door in the basement-to-upstairs door this evening! I'm holding it open with a stick and some tape because I know some of the cats will struggle to figure it out initially. Particularly the really shy former-hoarding-situation cat who I am trying to coax into moving into the basement with everybody else. She is holding onto the top floor as her safe space, but she does come explore down here at night. Even with the cat door propped open, I still think it will be a meaningful improvement in basement snugness compared to cracking the whole door.

In the last Calmer Vibes Chill Thread, I told the happy story of how I finally found a replacement for the perfect beanie that I had bought and then lost a couple of years ago. Last week it looked like that story was going to have a tragicomic sequel when I discovered that I had lost the replacement beanie! But I went back to the restaurant that was one of the last places I remembered having it (with little hope in my heart, since it seemed the fates had decreed that I was never to own a hat like this for more than a few weeks.) And it was there! They had found it and kept it on a shelf behind the counter. So now I am happy again. About that, at least.

I'm also happy about the tomato and pepper seeds that have been arriving in the mail. This year I did a good job of making sure I got my orders in early so I'll be able to start my seeds as early as I want. My plan for tomatoes was to focus on varieties I know do well for me and not try too many new varieties. But then one place was offering a free packet if I just spent a little more than I had planned so, despite the fact that I did not at all need a free random tomato seed packet, I ordered a couple more tomato varieties that were on sale so I could get my unneeded free packet. And then another place had a minimum order, so I added a couple of varieties to my order there. And another place gave me a free random variety. So now I have a lot of new varieties to try in the coming year and I'm excited to see how they do and thinking about all the delicious fresh salsa I'm going to make.

I'm taking a few weeks off from my job as a trial for taking, uh, the rest of my life off from that job. I've worked there for fifteen years and it's felt like I probably should have stopped at around twelve for some time. This was my first day and my kid had the day off so we went for a long hike, went out for lunch and then went shopping for lunar new year trinkets (it's her year this year and she's pumped to get some cute snake merch, which is usually hard to come by since people don't think snakes are cute).

Anyway the day was so fun and chill and amazing, and while I have a bunch of less exciting plans ahead (lots of deferred maintenance on my family's finances and such) it was so nice to take today for myself and my kid and not feel like I had to walk back into my stupid office tomorrow.

Totally different, but we finally just picked up "Stray," as an after-Christmas present. (discounted on Steam atm.) I'm not as good at leaping and climbing as I once was, so this may be an issue, but I feel like my evading Zurks and Sentinels skills are going to be solid. (Not a single Zurk or Sentinel has yet managed to penetrate my lair, so. Just saying.)

In non-game thingies, I'll share Soma FM. I don't know if it's well known or not so much, but in case not. Their self-description: "Over 30 unique channels of listener-supported, commercial-free, underground/alternative radio broadcasting to the world. All music hand-picked by SomaFM's award-winning DJs and music directors." I spent yesterday listening to old indy stuff and the "Secret Agent" channel, which is apparently the "soundtrack for my stylish, mysterious, dangerous life." If you also have a stylish, mysterious, dangerous life, you might want to try it! (One I liked from this channel that also seemed appropriate in the moment: FC Kahuna - Hayling.)

Thanks for the chill vibes, Glinn. Very much appreciated!
