Is there such a thing as a Harris policy thread?

This is a vibes thread. Put it here after no answer from the mods about whether we could have one, so they could approve or reject it. I don't really care where one is, as long as it exists somewhere.

Thank you, tiny frying pan! I am so excited about the Harris/Walz combo. Feels good to have people I want to vote FOR and not just AGAINST.

Jokes and ridicule is about the only thing that will get through the locked down skulls of some folks, who knew a lame joke about a couch would make so much national news. Still hoping for a new quip about soap.

Hopefully this is vibes? Lawyers, Guns & Money post on Democrats' new strategy of defending progressive policies in a forthright manner. I hope it works and that they expand the practice going forward.

Is there such a thing as a Harris policy thread?

Mmm, to some degree.

(The campaign has recently released more details about housing policy as well.)

I could share so many good screenshots if MeFi supported it. But this week we have positive polling, Swifties organizing, and awesome new voter registration data per Tom Bonier on Twitter: "in the 13 states that have updated voter files since July 21st, we are seeing incredible surges in voter registration relative to the same time period in 2024, driven by women, voters of color, and young voters."

My feel-good vibe is having someone I can vote for who has a good chance of defeating a psychopath who will end all of humanity if it so pleases him. Feeling good vibes for the human race.

Sigourney Weaver Tears Up at Venice After Reporter Links ‘Alien’s’ Ripley to Kamala Harris: ‘To Think My Work Would Have Anything to Do With Her Rise Makes Me Happy’

When asked about her tendency to take on tough female characters, Weaver said it’s not a conscious choice but an inherent trait of women.

“I’m always asked why I play strong women and I always think that’s such a weird question because I just play women, and women are strong and women don’t give up,” she said. “You know why? We can’t. We have to do it.”

I'd like to get a shirt for "Childless Cat Ladies for Harris". But the ones I've seen, including on the official website, are kind of blah. Anyone have a suggestion?

My digestive system endorses this thread.
This is not a joke.
Keep the good vibes coming. Thank you, tiny frying pan.

I like this shirt: childless cat ladies
posted by tiny frying pan at 7:20 AM on August 29 [2 favorites]

There are many many many many Childless Cat Lady shirts on Etsy. There is a plethora of choice to be had. I can't look up which one I got, but there's many awesome options (and I agree, the official merch is rather blah).

can you good vibes folks help me with this conflicted feeling I've been having? The unofficial merch is so much better than official merch! I want shirts, yard signs, hats, all the things! But I'm nervous if I'm buying from etsy or anywhere else unofficial then I don't know how the stuff is made or where the money goes. Is it worth it be to be a walking billboard for the next 3 months? Or is there a reasonably low-effort way to feel ok about which shops I buy from?
posted by jermsplan at 7:46 AM on August 29

I really dislike the official merch. So if I do end up buying merch, it will be something I like and I'll just send Harris some cash. Not sure I'll do either yet but that's my take on it.
posted by tiny frying pan at 7:55 AM on August 29 [6 favorites]

I donate to Harris and downballot candidates directly, and then buy the merch I like from sites like Etsy, TeePublic or Redbubble. As long as the artist/seller doesn't also sell pro-Trump crap I feel fine about it! So check out the shop as a whole. Definitely get merch though, visibility is so important.
posted by Threeve at 8:07 AM on August 29 [6 favorites]

I'm so glad I bought my Harris for President hat the day after she announced. I'm delighted by Walz, but also uninspired by the current official merch. I notice that the hat I have has been completely memory-holed from the internet, so I guess folks will think I went third party too. I think tfp has the right idea: buy what speaks to you and send $20 to the campaign.
posted by meinvt at 8:10 AM on August 29 [1 favorite]

We had an (unofficial) Kamala Harris: Obviously sign in our front yard and someone stole it. Deep blue Bay area, so I assume they also preferred the unofficial merch.
posted by kirkaracha (staff) at 8:10 AM on August 29 [6 favorites]

Like Threeve, I checked that the seller wasn't also selling Trump gear. And I got something a bit different from what the campaign would sell. Official merch has not arrived yet, I guess they're staying busy.

Official Merch report:
Order placed July 27 has recently been shipped (but not yet received).
(Kamala Prez shirt before VP announced - these are no longer offered in the store)

Order placed Aug 6 for Harris/Walz merch has not been fulfilled yet.

White House Rock shirt (not official) received last week from Bonfire. (1,567 sold to date - tote bag/mug/notebook added). Creator note says their share of the proceeds will go to the campaign.

More Harris/Walz merch at Bonfire.
Kamala merch at Bonfire
(I have not checked any of those to see how much is donated to the campaign)

MoveOn has a Venn diagram shirt I like; the official store has some interesting options if you looking at the "Designers for Democracy" menu item.

The Bloom County website has a [Bill the] Cat Lady t-shirt for the Gen X among us (probably no share of sales to the campaign though).

I made a fun-vibes nerdy drawing, anyone can feel free to print it out on a shirt.

What annoys me most about being online by phone is that all of a sudden I am being hammered by Trump ads on Facebook. Life can be so cruel.

We had our first sign stolen. (This has happened in other elections)
It was hand-painted, so I don't think it was taken for re-display.
So Mrs. Dewd painted three more signs, and I put them up, one 8' up on the barn side, and the biggest one chained to a pine tree. The 3rd was simplest, and easily stealable- kind of a test.
I feel that if more are stolen, we will paint and put up 3 more for each one taken.

...and don't these thieves understand that most folks will just buy another sign, raising more money for the cause?
posted by MtDewd at 4:03 PM on August 29 [15 favorites]

I have only ever been tempted to destroy one political sign and it was an ugly, violent one. Otherwise that's just out of pocket. I'm glad you're coming back bigger than ever! ALL THE SIGNS.

Did anyone see the interview tonight? I missed it. I am hoping for a good streaming option after the fact.

The campaign is doing a 50-stop bus tour to talk about reproductive rights.

The tour will make at least 50 stops in red, blue and battleground states in the next couple of months, the campaign announced. Surrogates will focus on talking to voters about Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s (D) plans to restore the protections of Roe v. Wade, which was overturned by the Supreme Court in 2022.

The tour will also focus on holding Trump “directly accountable for the devastating impacts of overturning Roe v. Wade, including threatening access to [in vitro fertilization],” according to the campaign, and outline the difference between Trump’s stance on abortion and Harris’s stance.

So, so smart.

Could we get this thread of off the grey and onto the front page, please? I keep wanting to participate and squee along with everyone but it feels wrong to do it on the grey.
posted by MiraK at 8:14 AM on September 3

It’s on the grey because it is the result of a somewhat long and contentious MetaTalk. Look below if you want to go find it.

Separately, I don’t actually get what’s wrong with squeeing here? This is a fine place to squee!
posted by nat at 8:19 AM on September 3 [3 favorites]

MiraK, if you want one on the front page, please post! Either way, I'll be happy to have the space for it here or there.

Yeaahhh I just spent the morning catching up on The Other MeTA thread. Yikes. Okay. When I am done with work I think I want to make a thread on the green for squee. I don't know why it feels so wrong to participate in non meta chatter on the grey. My brain gets weirder by the day, what was goody-two-shoesing and rule following in my girlhood has turned into ... this... in middle age.

<3 Thank you everyone.

Unleash the squeeeeeee!!!
Yeah, I'm excited for a politics thread that doesn't bother my digestive system. Well, beyond obvious levels given that the stakes are high and that people are organizing.
But it's okay, better than okay, to have hope.
No apologies.

I'm with you, but maybe they decided to put a little cap on new zingers or bombshells to drop them at the debate, or hold in reserve in case they need a post-debate fixer? Sorry, that felt a little nervous-vibey. Let me try happy -

I took everyone's advice, tossed money straight to the campaign and then bought a hat and yard sign from sellers that seemed cool. I'm so impatient waiting for them to show up. My little bubble of NC is already hardcore blue, but you never know, can't hurt

I see a lot of doom and gloom, and if you want to argue about whether George W. Or Trump is worse, that's a good thread! Once again, though, nothing to do with Harris.

I have been thinking about grade school since all the kids are walking there in my neighborhood now, so here's a clip of Harris speaking about one of her great teachers ---> here

RAW VIDEO: Kamala Harris reacts to Dick Cheney, Liz Cheney endorsements after meeting lots of fans, young and old at a very packed Penzey's. Totally normally gets shown the inventory by a pretty chill employee with dozens of cameras looking on. (The endorsement conversation is less interesting, but starts at about 9:06)
posted by Glinn at 4:12 PM on September 7

(I think this raw news camera footage someone posted in one of the other threads is even more moving/human/etc. than the edited-for-Instagram version, maybe partly because you get to see her notice the woman who's moved to tears from amidst all the cheering upon her arrival.)

Anyone going to be on metachat for the debate? I'm thinking maybe it's a good thing there's not really a post devoted to it, and maybe it will stay that way? Chats are better than threads for something like that.
