With a single exception a couple months ago, I haven't seen any hummingbirds at my feeders since around the end of last December - but I guess that's not as relevant as I expected it to be when I clicked on the post. Ah well...

When globally famous gay penguin Sphen died in Sydney, his partner began to sing
Sphen appears to have died of natural causes in August as he approached his 12th birthday.posted by trig at 5:07 PM on August 21 [4 favorites]
His younger partner, aged eight, was taken to his side to help process the loss and understand his partner wouldn’t return.
“He immediately started singing, which was beautifully reciprocated by the colony,” the aquarium said.
Okay, some more Aug. 21 birds:
Researchers find cultural change in the dialects of parrots over 22-year period
Some large birds in (US) Georgia
West Nile Virus found in bird in Portland
Endangered birds successfully nest for first time since 1960s on Presque Isle
Feeding waterfowl may cause wing deformities (though Wikipedia disagrees)
Neanderthal exploitation of birds in north-western Europe
A Northern Harrier (Circus cyaneus), equipped with a satellite transmitter, embarked on an epic 170-day migration from Türkiye’s Igdir to the Arctic Ocean
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, used dredged sediment from the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway to create a two-acre artificial island for birds along the East River.
A lake in Oregon's High Desert is saltier than the ocean. That brings tens of thousands of birds. (bonus excellent author name)
Familiar garden birds with unusual plumage features, such as a Blackbird or sparrow with striking white feathers, will often catch our eye, and the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) is asking for help in mapping these scarce occurrences.

It's 3:30 pm est and I'm getting concerned.
[TZ pedantry]We're not in the EST time zone (in the Eastern US), we're in EDT. It's better to say ET or Eastern year round and avoid this mistake entirely.[/TZ pedantry]
(And yes this mistake has been getting normalized. It's still wrong. Now get off my lawn.)
