Just letting everyone know that we've been informed that community member bigbigdog passed away on May 18, 2024

In the email notifying us of his death, there's this lovely information about him:
"Gary LOVED metafilter and enjoyed being a member here and connecting with people very much. He was an active leader and pillar of the gaming community at paizo.com and was inspired to tend and care for those folks by how well he felt metafilter was run and moderated."

That's so sad to hear. My deepest condolences to his friends and family.

(For all the flaws in this community, it still does good -- and is good -- when it inspires a member like this. And that good ripples outward! I known that I am better for what I have learned here, too, and I thank all of you for that.)

Tbh I wasn't very familiar with him or Paizo, so I googled the site for his name and it made me smile:

Gary Teter is the man!
This guy has been RELENTLESS ALL WEEKEND in answering questions and keeping the faith amongst the unwashed Paizo-zombies.
Gary Teter Fanboi Love Thread
Give it up for our resident PostMonster General! The Master Monster of the Mainframe, the Sultan of the Servers, the King of Kode, the Beast of Binary, and the God of the Gigabyte!
*cue marching band of goblins*
Thanks, Gary Teter!!!

Gary, you do a great job!

He seems like a good guy that a lot of people liked and appreciated, somebody who made his little corner of the web a nicer place -- makes me sad not to know him better.

Awww, so sorry. Gary seemed like a sweetheart. I notice that his obit is a little short on details but you can definitely get to know the man reading his blog. He had so many great nerdy hobbies and a grand sense of humor. He was helpful here and had been here very nearly 20 years. He'll be missed. May his memory be a blessing.

It's a special kind of bummer to find out about someone who seems very cool from their obit post, having somehow narrowly missed bumping into each other in threads for 20 years.

RIP, bbd.

What Dirty Old Town said. Here you can miss someone you never met upon finding out about what a good person they were only upon their passing. Which speaks well for here but all the same, we are diminished.

We live in a world now where we leave a semi-permanent record whenever we post something, and we can even leave last words without realizing it. He seemed like a good guy.

His last comment, in April, about creativity, is very good.
