That zip code white paper from 2013 is fascinating. Never knew it could be so. I am one of those nerds who knows his zip+4, but still this is interesting. People do identify with their zip code. I think it is a more precise identifier than the area code. When I lived in another state, my license plate was my original home town's zip code. Only one person ever figured it out. Or at least told me they figured it out.
Anyway, thank you for posting that misc. link.

We've got quite a few podcast transcripts up on the wiki, otter.ai seemed to provide decent enough transcripts, and I decided to pay for it, to fill in the gaps. It'll take months, but it's rolling along now.

Oh boy, "unwritten rule" that's been seeming to come up a lot for me lately, as in, other people seem to have never heard this? If you're asking someone for a favor, you're required to do reasonable things to make it easy for them. Like be ready when they get there, instead of making them wait for the privilege of helping you.
(And while I'm at it, lefty-loosey-righty-tighty is a rule, not just a physical description. That means twist-ties too)

Like 7 inches from the midday sun!
I can’t believe all the votes my stupid project got, but I have been stubbornly renewing that domain for 12 years just to get to this point. There were obviously some more jokes I was going to add, like a custom 404 page, but neglected to even do that, so my barest intentions end up also being part of the piece of (non) performance art.

This was a fun episode (as ever), but I do resent that every time I see the title at the top of MeTa, my feeble Gen X brain immediately makes me sing out, in simulated Rob Thomas voice: "Like seven inches from the midday sun."

Try playing it in a cover band once a month for 10 years. It can get seriously lodged in there.

Lol sound! So I was one of the complainers when eotvos took over audio production for that changing of the guard thing. It's all good now, high five. I also just left a comment on my preacher cousin's Sunday sermon video bitching about the audio levels because it's like 5 am and it's cranked to 100% and I can still only barely hear him when a truck passes by. And OMG his sermon for the day is about "Listen". I only check in every once in a while because meh it's nice to hear my cousin now and then. But I do fast-forward through most of it.
Which brings us back to previous podcast with loup and really enjoying the "met the troll, with context, they're mostly OK". Somehow things are much easier IRL than online? Neighbors chuckle at things that get flagged and deleted. So odd.
Warm... the last couple of weeks it's been like 110+ around here, sorta reminds me of time spent living in Phoenix AZ where when you walk out the door it's like walking into a blast oven. Shit's been hot.
I sorta wish I knew ASL, I only remember (boy, girl, large) for some odd reason. (that deaf pregnant woman was amused when I signed that she was large). But a failure early in the pandemic ages was when I tried to rope in a homeless bum collecting cans with the "you want cans? I have cans. Follow me for a minute and I'll give your a whole bunch of cans." spiel because he was deaf My half-assed mime of that just freaked him out. Even the ALS suffering dude in the powered wheelchair who can barely mumble yes/no was hella easier to give a trashbag full of crushed cans to. Wish I could have 'talked' to the deaf dude.
The whole manhole thing.... at Caltech that summer scampering around the underground steam tunnels... I totally have climbed up a ladder and poked up a manhole cover to take a peek around to to get bearings and figure out which tunnel to follow. Tons of fun. In my $WORK, man holes were like MH102 like things and right up there with buildings. I know my man holes (and that people can somehow misspell "man hole", I fixed the typos, just another day).
OMG, stop blaming everyting on old cis white dude hippie like people. Gah, it's fucking annoying.
And yeah, bitching to phone/chat support... there's a talent to that of making them comply if for nothing else than to shut you up.
(this post totally brought to you by just typing in key words/phrases while listening to the podcast. they're so much fun and random diversions. it would probably be totally awesome to do a podcast from a MeFi meetup or some such, a bit of a party as it were.)
