[MeFi Site Update] May 25th May 25, 2022 1:52 PM   Subscribe

Hi there, Metafilter! Happy Wednesday! You’ll find updates regarding the site below. I’m looking forward to your feedback and questions.

- MeFi User Survey
As you can read here the Transition Team has been working on really cementing MeFi as a community-driven site and you can contribute to it by completing the survey they posted. You can have a high-level overview of the progress made here. Also, I will be meeting with them by early June to go over the how the new mod coverage has impacted our expenses and the revenue reports provided.

- Site Ownership Changes
The website ownership transfer is progressing, to the point where we can openly say that Jessamyn will be the new site owner. We have not announced this before just because we agreed to hold any announcements until the transfer process was actually happening and progressing. She will maintain the business registration and pay applicable federal and state taxes, other than that, she, the mods, myself and the Transition Team agree that most non-moderation/policy decisions should be made by the Steering Committee (SC) being created and that the staff will execute those decisions. I will keep being the person who runs day-to-day stuff.

- Signup flow, Marketing efforts.
I’ll go over the changes needed to the signup flow with frimble next week and discuss marketing efforts and site priorities with the Transition Team in the upcoming meeting.

- BIPOC Advisory Board
The next BIPOC Advisory Board meeting will take place next Saturday, May 28th, from here we are aiming to meet once every month. More details on that next monday.

- Fun Projects/Posts/Newsletter
Taz will keep managing the sidebar, Best Of, Metatalk Tails and open threads in the blue. We’re still figuring out the best process and owner for the Newsletter.

- Technical Changes
Changes to the flagging UX are still the main priority right now, and frimble is working on them.
Frimble has made some several admin facing fixes / additions, and also made it so that the site banner is also visible to non-logged visitors and non-members.

If you have any questions or feedback not related to this particular update, please Contact Us instead. If you want to discuss a particular subject not covered here with the community, you’re welcome to open a separate MetaTalk thread for it.

Well congratulations to jessamyn! Thanks for the update. And the reminder I should actually take the survey.

Thank you, Jessamyn, for taking this on. And thank you to Cortex for keeping the lights on so long. Enjoy your rest.

This place is not perfect, few things are, but it's important to a lot of people. I appreciate the work of the Transition Team and the future Steering Committee and all who have helped this place survive for so long.

I look forward to a new era.

Hi -- I, too, am reading this thread. loup is absolutely correct, my plans are to be the person who does admin and paperwork and legal stuff if there is any. I will not be moderating or leading the moderation team. I believe MetaFilter should be mostly run by the community to the extent that is possible and to the extent that it is necessary. I stepped up for this role because someone had to, because cortex was past done with site ownership, and because I'm here nearly every day anyhow. We're still in the process of doing the transfer. I'm available for questions either here or over email.

where we can openly say that Jessamyn will be the new site owner

Blessed by the Jess of the West!
Holding us all up now, it’s the best -
And I know I sound dumb, and obsessed …
But I’m so happy to hear just what you’ve expressed,
Cause this whole site’s never gonna be depressed
Now she’s the new Queen of our quest!
It’s a fact that I wanted to say that I’d guessed:
WE’RE GETTING BLESSED BY THE JESS OF THE WEST! 😁

Ah, I was hoping it would be Jessamyn -- and had even typed out a comment saying as much in the last relevant thread, but I'd held back from posting it because I didn't want whoever it did end up being to feel bad. Good choice, everybody!

I had a strong hunch that jessamyn was the new owner and it's for that reason I've been almost completely unworried about the matter. So, this is great news!

I think the reasons for the owner not also modding are self-evident at this point: the two roles combined is a recipe for burnout. (That said, jessamyn is probably the most highly-skilled and effective moderator I've ever seen.)

The agreeable news that Jessamyn is the third and latest site owner of MetaFilter is, indeed, both marvellous and splendid. One hopes that the 25th of May will be added to the MetaFilter calendar of dates for annual celebration.

(Also, there are a few specific librarians I was hoping to nudge to join MetaFilter, as their content would be fun and interesting, and this announcement of the new owner is quite the persuasive point)

This is really good news. Jessamyn has had a profound and lasting positive impact on this place and on many of us here, and when business stuff needs to happen i know her stewardship will always be informed by her care for the humans involved.

May this be as just as good for cortex and for Jessamyn as it’s going to be for the rest of us.

Thank you for stepping in to take on this responsibility, Jessamyn!

This news prompted an excited librarian "oook!" From me and the first comment I've made since *checks watch*...2019. I'd stepped away for a bit because of the general state of the world was becoming too much.

It's a great outcome, and thanks to Cortex and the team for stewarding the site into its new era.

I want to say briefly how glad I am to be transferring ownership of the site to Jessamyn; I was deeply relieved and grateful when after we talked about it a fair bit a while back she agreed to take on these responsibilities, and appreciate her patience (and everyone else's) as we worked out the needful stuff to get this far enough along to feel good talking about it publicly.

There's no one better for it, Jess. I'm glad it's you. Thanks again.

I'll add, and should have included in my first comment, thanks and heartfelt gratitude to cortex for keeping MeFi running all these years and mathowie before, and originally. For whatever mefi's faults (mixed in with its many virtues), I think it's fairly remarkable how continuous (albeit bumpy at times) it's been and I assume it will continue so and improve with the new ownership and leadership structure. Many, many sites have completely decayed or otherwise collapsed when similar changes had to be made. So I'm happy and proud to be able to have been here for so long.

FUCK YEAH.
posted by loquacious at 7:09 PM on May 25, 2022 [7 favorites]

This is the best possible outcome, in my opinion. As with many of you, I had a strong hunch it was Jessamyn. It was obvious how important it was to Josh that the site be transferred to someone with deep ties to the site. And he seemed very confident that the new owner supported moving to a more community-based model. Plus, he made it clear that he was transferring ownership, rather than selling for profit. I honestly never really considered it would be anyone else.

So I was never concerned about the new owner. But I was concerned about how the change might impact the new owner. I didn't want to see Jessamyn get dragged down by the weight of running this place.

Which is why I am so excited by the model described above. We have an owner who honestly loves the place, whose judgement I completely trust. But by separating the ownership from the moderation and empowering a true Steering Committee to let the community self direct (as much as is practical), I think we get the best of all worlds.

Thank you, Josh, for taking such care to make this change a meaningful one.

Thank you, Jessamyn, for letting us lean on you.

Thank you, Mods, for all that you do to try and make this place worth coming back to.

Thank you, Transition Team, for giving us such a solid foundation to build from.

And now, MeFites, it is up to us.

I think it's a good sign that among the usernames coming out to celebrate here, I am note people who I haven't been seeing a lot of lately.

*waves at various MeFi elders, with their ear trumpets and long beards*

I hope there will be a resurgence of old-timers coming back a bit -- not because I don't like the current Frequent Flyers, but because a lot of the site's strength comes from its longevity. Ye Olden Dayes weren't perfect, but they shouldn't be thrown out, either.

Anyway, this is great news!

Taz will keep managing the sidebar, Best Of, Metatalk Tails and open threads in the blue. We’re still figuring out the best process and owner for the Newsletter.

Are the Best Of, Newsletter, and podcast similar enough that there could be some, uh, "recycling" here? I mean, the sidebar and Best Of seem really similar to me, and I expect that some of that goes into the Newsletter, too.

Just thinking about ways to eliminate repetition for y'all!

Echoing lazaruslong, with the weight of how rapidly how many things have gone to shit in the last week or weeks, I haven’t had much of the energy I’ve increasingly needed to engage here, and randomly seeing a hint of this on Twitter (and yes, spending time there is part of what’s weighing me down so badly), I came in to check.

Seeing this news has lifted off of me a weight I didn’t know I was carrying. I know that cortex took over because he loved this place and understood its value, and tried the best he could, far longer than he should have had to in order to keep it running. The vague unease at who would be taking over, even the stupid jokes that it would be Musk or Zuckerberg, that stress just sort of snuck in with the other stuff. Reading that Jessamyn is taking over, that the site will continue to be under the care of someone who understands just how deeply valued this space is, I physically felt freer, like I could breathe more deeply.

Goddamn, it’s nice to get good news. I’d forgotten what that’s like.

Nope! I am serious about being here as a friendly helpful user but not getting too involved in day-to-day stuff. Maybe, in decades, when jessamyn decided to retire from owning MeFi, one of us 10kers will finally be able to own metafilter.

I am pleased about this, but also hope jessamyn is not next in the list of burnt out site owners.

I am pleased about this as well, but feeling some Frodo at Council of Elrond vibes.

Yes, it's great news that Jessamyn is taking up the mantle. But what's much better news is that she's taking it up differently than the two before, and we're remaking the place to be community-led rather than mod-led. Staff is necessary to do the administrative things, but MetaFilter has wanted to be run by its members for a long, long time, and the staff burnout will only end when the staff and members are truly working together rather than at cross purposes. I'd like this place to continue to be a viable space to learn and discuss and even joke around, and I feel like we might just squeak by now.

And with all this celebration it’s a good time recognize loup for their professionalism, sensibility and responsiveness. What’s great about this new leadership matrix is that this is a real partnership to share the various burdens of management.

Mazel tov! Quite happy with this news, which was genuinely unexpected and an extremely pleasant surprise. Having a more defined structure with some guard rails in place to prevent burnout is a wonderful thing, and I am just beyond delighted that Jessamyn is going to be the new owner! How wonderful!

Thank you so much Jessamyn. I hope you find satisfaction.

Conflicted feelings on this.

First, Jessamyn is a great choice if it comes to doing this job.

But I have to say my first thought was: why the hell does she want to put herself through this ordeal?

If you're going to do it, like the others have said above, try to keep some distance. Take whole days (or weeks) where you don't check the site or any email account or social media site that's going to mention it. It's just a website, it's not worth burning out another human being over it.

I'm going to be presumptuous here: We all secretly hoped.

P.S. I owe you that other email but I'm going to delay it a bit since no doubt the torrent has been unleashed.

why the hell does she want to put herself through this ordeal?

I'm in a fortunate place in my life right now. The job I'm doing isn't cortex's job. The next stage of MeFi is going to involve many people in the community (not just staff) putting in some work. Seemed a little more like calling "dibs" on one of the jobs that I am better suited for so I do not wind up with a worse one. Put another way, I think many of us know that MeFi is in a precarious place where tough decisions may need to be made. I think that requires active management which loup is capably doing, as well as active oversight which is me and, to a certain extent, everyone in here.

No mention of the persistent ableism on the site, nor the mods ignoring flags about it. I will then.

I've had enough frankly. The mods don't seem to give a fuck about making this site less tolerant of hatred and aggression towards disabled people.

I really see little reason to stay a member of a site run by people who don't seem to give a fuck about me. This place has meant a lot to me, but I'm so tired of saving souls. Maybe it's time to just let it go to hell in its own way.

Hey howfar, sorry you've been experiencing persistent ableism on the site, that's gotta suck. Feel free to reach out to the mods or create a MetaTalk thread to address the problems with the mods and community at the same time.

I don't think the mods or community don't care, but we may be blind and/or ignorant. Hopefully we with your help we can start getting this problem rectified.

persistent ableism on the site

But please help some of us to understand, as I just really do not follow what the issue actually is. I for one example advocate walking for health frequently but do not think that's offensive. Extending that example I am highly aware of my physical benefit, every single step. Heart goes out deeply deeply to any that can not. But wish those in pain could help us understand just a bit. Perhaps another thread though.

Perhaps this should be the subject of its own MeTa post?

Using blind as a synonym for ignorant / unaware / uninformed on an issue is ableist language, for a start.

I'm not trying to have this correction read like a dunk and it isn't intended as one, but it is intended as a bit sharp.

Responding to a member's clearly grave concern about ableism on the site with 101 level ableist language is...not a good look.

a site run by people who don't seem to give a fuck about me.
That was how I felt back in the day when I initially began to see users complain about discrimination and the mods start to barely notice and then balk and then slowly begin to figure out how they should respond to complaints about discrimination. I was dismayed when NoraReed buttoned. But I stayed because of NoraReed's fight and other people like NoraReed who also stayed and continued to advocate for better, and I saw the mods and the user base wake up and it almost felt like kind of sober up, and the site began steadily to improve.

MetaFilter might not know how to care properly, yet, for its whole community, but it doesn't mean it doesn't want to and won't ever learn to. And meanwhile there are people in marginalized groups creating precious things here, like this gorgeous mind-expanding piece of wonder by warriorqueen.

I apparently misread something in a MeTa at some point which squashed my hope that Jessamyn would be the next owner.

I am delightfully suprised that I was wrong.

Jessamyn as the new owner just seems perfect. A natural fit that will work so well with being more community led.

Thank you, Jessamyn for taking the reins.
