A Metafilter Discord - Metacraft April 28, 2022 8:02 AM Subscribe
A few years a Discord server called Metacraft was created for Mefites to hang out and share their crafting projects. It's recently been expanded to include a few more channels for broader activity. If you're looking for somewhere to chat about crafting and showcase what you're making, post pics of your pets or the view out your window, or just somewhere lowkey to hang out and shoot the sh*t, check out the server :)
So far we have:
. a channel to talk about craft and everyone's projects
. a crafting showcase channel
. a general/off-topic chat channel
. a pics channel (for pets, food, random photos you took, art, etc)
. a voice channel (&voice+text channel)
It can expand in any direction the community needs, so we're open to ideas.
Maybe during NaNoWriMo there can be NaNo channel to chat about goals and progress, with bots for sprinting/reminding/word count?
Maybe we can have a pomodoro bot channel for people who want to have company while getting things done in a focused ?
Anyway, pop in and say hi!

Having a regular weekly video chat would be a really nice way of getting to know folks and keeping people coming back. Crafting could be encouraged but optional. I already host 2 weekly online craft groups, so I'm not really up for another one, but I highly recommend them as a community-building thing.

I'll second this. I'll likely post some of my songs I've written there too, unless we have a separate channel for that.
It's been great to see so many MeFites showing up on the server!

I am a bit of a craft person, but I am not a Discord person. Do I have to become a Discord person now? Discord kind of scares me.

ArbitraryAndCapricious: I was scared of discord at first but now I love it (I'm on a few other servers besides this one). I suggest downloading the app and seeing if it works for you (I don't use the desktop version, but maybe you'll like that!) It's a bit chaotic but not as crazy as tiktok and maybe about as easy to pick up as Instagram. Good luck! Let me know if you need help with this!

Clarification: only some Discord servers seem to require a phone number, and this isn't one of them AFAICT.
And I for one very much prefer the browser version of Discord to the phone app.
I've used Discord some, and it's really not terrible. Be not afraid!

Hehe, if there's enough interest we can for sure put in a sports section.

I don't think so (since the Discord server's only newly expanded into including a general chat chat) - I only went looking to see if Metafilter had a Discord bc I couldn't get the Mefi Chat to work for me in any way (browser or chat client). So far I'm thinking it can be somewhere additional to IRC, for people like me who can't get onto it, or who normally use Discord anyway? I don't want to take away traffic from the main site basically. If Metafilter ever makes a Chatfilter subsite/tag I'd encourage the chatty activity happening on the server towards there (for members who are ok with posting their stuff on somewhere more permanent and public).

It's just a chat room basically :) There's a 'how to Discord' channel on our server that explains the basics of Discord, and you can ask stuff in the chat any time if you're not sure about anything. Welcome!
